Guide to FM in the lower leagues!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 08:24 AM PDT

Seen a few people recently asking about tips in the lower leagues and I've had some success there myself so thought I'd give some general tips. I tend to start around League 2 / Conference level in English football but I'm sure most of this will be applicable to other lower league football around the world.

Club/Financials - Money or lack of it is obviously a big factor down here and there a few things you can do to get a big boost

    - Speak to your board about a senior affiliate. They usually pay £30-50k per year and play an friendly worth another £30-50k every year. When your annual income was only 100-100k to begin with, this is huge.

    - Arrange as many friendlies as you can in pre-season vs the lowest reputation teams possible. Great gate money, quickly gains tactical familiarity and boosts morale. Just keep an eye on player condition otherwise you'll get a shitload of injuries. This can earn another 50-100k or so each season. Sometimes you can squeeze a few of these games into cup and international breaks too.

    - Don't upgrade facilities until you're in a secure financial position where you have at least £1m in the bank all year. Eats too much into your transfer/wage budgets and your board might cancel them halfway through.

    - Spend some time manually doing all player and staff contracts and bring them down as low as you possibly can - this is where most of your money is going and it makes a big difference. You can do this by offering clauses they are never going to trigger like 10+ goals for a CB, goal bonus for DM and winning the FA cup etc. and use that to bring their wages down. Offering backup players a higher appearance fee and lower wage helps too. £0 relegation release clause helps too because you'll normally be sacked before you get relegated anyway.

    - Don't bother with a youth team yet until you're in a secure financial position (£1m+ in the bank all year) and you have decent facilities. You'll only get shit players and it really eats into your budget paying for the facilities, the players themselves, the staff etc. and you're going to get promoted so you'll outgrow even star youth players very quickly.

    Tactics

    - Use tactics that utilise your player's stats vs the relative stats of the players in the league. For example, long shots are poor in lower leagues because 10 long shots is considered good down there but the accuracy is based on your (low rated) player vs the size/distance of the goal so he's usually going to miss. Closing down however, most players will have acceptable pace/stamina/aggression to close down and most opposing players are going to have <10 composure/touch/technique so it tends to be very successful.

    - For the reason explained above, having one or two 14+ pace merchants in your team is very handy as the average pace is around 10 so one long pass can tear the other team apart. Closing down is great because the opposition normally can't handle it. Long shots are generally poor because these players aren't likely to hit the target unless they are 13+ finishing/long shots/technique.

    - Good physical stats tend to be very useful. Good strength/stamina/fitness/pace help with closing down and there are a lot of older, more technical players at the level and you can really bully them.

    - If in doubt, attack. Defensive tactics rarely work in FM regardless of the league. Also in the lower leagues, there's far less of a gap between the smaller and bigger clubs so it usually pays off.

    - Other than this, just play to the strengths of your best players, you can't afford to choose a tactic then just go and buy the best players for it. So if you have good attacking full backs and a good target man for example, maybe find a good corner taker too, get some crosses into the box, get a midfielder to make runs into the box to support and try for more set pieces. If your CB's are slow but good in the air, use a lower and narrower line so they aren't exposed for pace and encourage the opposition to get wide and put crosses in. If you have a good goal poacher, make sure to get some players forward to be around him etc.

    Players/Transfers

    - No player is worth going all out to keep, everyone has a price. I tend to let players go whenever I get an offer that is more than their value. (Some exceptions if they are young/promising or massively in form). At the top end of the game there are a limited number of viable players but there's always a better player out there this low down and you can often get them on loans and free transfers. Stick to your wage structure.

    - Mainly bring in players on loans and free transfers. Loans are especially useful, check your senior affiliate for players they want to loan out. You can often get a star-level player for free for the year. If he has a good time at your club, it's worth putting a cheeky bid in at the end of the year, it's surprising how often they are willing to join you.

    - Be very careful about offering longer contracts. I usually don't offer more than 2 years unless they are spectacular, like 4* at 18yo or something. It's very difficult to sell players this low down in the leagues, sometimes you can't give the player away so it's much more of a risk. I'd rather risk losing a good player than crippling my wage bill by paying shit players that aren't going to play.

    - Make sure to scout players 7-8 months from their contract ending and keep a shortlist of players with <6 months, you can get some really great free transfers this way.

    - When you get promoted, don't make too many changes to your team. There isn't a huge gap between bigger and smaller clubs at this level so you can usually keep that team harmony going and keep winning.

    - If there's a great 4-5* player available on a free on reasonable wages but doesn't fit your tactic, consider buying him and fitting your tactic to him. Again, you don't have the budget to be inflexible with tactics.

Hope that's helpful, it's given me some good success. I've won the prem and european trophies with League 2 and conference clubs within 10-15 seasons on several games playing this way.
