Preface: The Infamous Ipswich: A "Moneyball" Reddit Series.

    So.

    Backstory:

I'm a former second-level student who has recently been given a place in a local College/University to undergo a 4-year undergraduate business course to obtain a

Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business (Preferably majoring in business management and economics). The dream however is in sports, football especially. I have a mild ambition to work in the coaching/scouting aspect of football but in the long run, I essentially would like to be involved with the financials of a football club or football player in general. Its a long process acquiring a job in this field with prestigious jobs like Sporting Director, Technical Director, Head of Recruitment, etc. But the desire is there and I am determined to find a home for my career, doing something I enjoy and if it means long hours and hard graft then so be it.

    This, however, is my entertainment.

I decided to create this write up series as a means of broadening my vocabulary and writing structure while I attend college. I had attempted to start a solo football podcast for the new season but had trouble getting the audio and recording right despite having the necessary equipment(I think), so that was also a factor in starting this Reddit series. The main factor, however, is fun. I've enjoyed my fair share of football manager despite being a younger in the field, starting in FM14. However, during the mid months of the new year, I find myself stagnant with a lack of craving to progress in saves that I've put lengthy time into. So I've decided to explore a different avenue of Football Manager, Moneyball.

    Moneyball in definition:

Using statistical analysis, small-market teams can compete by buying assets that are undervalued by other teams and selling ones that are overvalued by other teams. The best-known Moneyball theory was that on-base percentage was an undervalued asset and sluggers were overvalued.

Now while that is quite difficult to do in Football Manager, I will use in-depth analysis as best I can to replicate the philosophy of "Moneyball".

    The Rules are as follows:

These were taken from Alex Stewart's in-depth Moneyball series which was what partially inspired me to follow suit.

    1. Net wage spend is more important than net transfer spend (pp. 14-21)

    2. Don't needlessly splash out on new players or sell old ones when you take over a club – the New Manager Syndrome (pp. 21-22)

    3. Don't buy players who impressed at international tournaments: they're likely to be overvalued and past performance is no indication of future performance, especially when they're playing with a different team (pp. 22-24) – there are different incentives and a different tactical set-up at tournaments, and it's a super small sample size.

    4. Some nationalities are overrated, like Holland, Brazil, and England (pp. 24-25)

    5. Sell your players at the right time: when they're around 30 years old, goalkeepers aside (p. 29)

    6. Use the wisdom of crowds: ask all your scouts and a Director of Football if you have one (pp. 43-44)

    7. Buy players in their early twenties, which avoids the problems with not developing properly, and means previous statistics have greater value (pp. 45-47)

    8. Centre-forwards cost more than they should (p. 47)

    9. Sell any player if a club offers more than they are worth and try to replace them before they are sold (pp. 48-49)

    10. Don't buy players if you don't need to: develop a youth network and try to develop your own players (pp. 49-51)

    From <https://thesetpieces.com/latest-posts/football-manager-meets-moneyball-pt-1/>

With these rules, I will aim to achieve the most silverware and success with my chosen club, using the finite resources I have given to me by the club. While Football Manager is not a true representation of real-world football, I will do my best to replicate real-world football so that the series is as interesting as possible.

There were many Clubs I had looked at for this mini-series. Sparta Rotterdam, Stuttgart, The famous Real Oviedo. But one club clicked with me, Ipswich. Now usually I would give a detailed explanation as to why I picked this club but this time its the contrary. The reason I picked this club is because of one man, Bryan Klug. In the last 3 years, Bryan Klug has been side by side with me in every save I journey upon and this time I want it to be no different. Instead of Bryan Klug coming to join me at my club in my new save, I'm going to him at Ipswich. Now usually, he joins me as "Assistant Manager" in my saves with various teams. However this time, I do not have the funds to reappoint him as my assman so he will have to remain as Head Of Youth Development this time but will continue to lead general training with the first team.

This is the beginning of the Infamous Ipswich.

So I got FM20 through Epic Games and I am wondering how do I change the name of competitions, face packs, kits, etc. I had FM17 and add all of those thing but it was through steam. Could anyone give me the file location that is similar to steams.

Preseason: The Infamous Ipswich: A "Moneyball" Reddit Series.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 04:52 PM PDT

    So.

We start. Ipswich is a very recognisable club in England so I was expecting no shortage of high demand upon entering the position and I was not wrong. The club expects a playoff spot at the minimum and looks to kick on in the championship to make it to the premier league as fast as possible. The club has asked to prioritise the youth recruitment system and develop young players which will be a contributing factor in this save but at league one, you need all the help you can get. Upon checking the squad depth, I'm immediately faced with 7 first team injuries, many of those carrying into the Christmas period so I expect depth to be a problem.

I've sat down and had a look at our strengths on the pitch and have noticed the lack of wide players at the club and have decided I will look to play a narrow system flooding the middle of the park where I have some serious quality for this division rather than trying to fix this issue. Youth recruitment was next to none. While there are some exciting prospects in the youth teams, many of them are carrying significant injury's which is upsetting but Shouganai, it is what it is. Because of this, only one player has made the cut. Armando Dobra, an 18-year-old Albanian Attacking midfielder who looks to be a real prospect has been given the call-up. He could prove vital to us in terms of squad depth this season.

    System:

I've decided to play a similar system that I played with Udinese in a 06/07 save with a mate. I call it "Il Borsa Chiusa Sistema". The system lines up a 4-1-3-2 but in-game transitions to a 3-5-2 in attack. The backline I wish to possess confidence when on the ball, playing the ball past the first line of engagement relatively easily. Inverted Wing backs are utilised in the system as we do not own wide players with pace. However, I prefer wing-backs with a great passing ability that can contribute to the midfield work and final third, allowing the traditional box to box midfielders to defend higher up in the half-space areas. With the midfield, I will play an anchorman to act as a centre half essentially but remain higher than a half back, sweeping up the ball and laying it off to a more creative player to work the ball further up the pitch. The last player in the midfield is instructed as a Deep Lying Playmaker. While I do not necessarily want him to act as such, he is merely another option for the anchor to feed the ball into the middle. The frontmen are in combination, a poacher and a pressing player. Good cop bad cop. One player acts as an effective front presser while the other aims to break past the line getting into unusual spaces to accumulate scoring chances. I am a quite pragmatic manager so while I don't expect an initial surge in form, I believe in my philosophy as well as Louis Van Gaal believes in his so I fully expect that the team will come good as a result.

    Key Players:

While we don't have many players in our first-team squad, there is some great experienced quality for this division. Some of the stand out names, Luke Woolfenden at centre half, Emyr Huws as the anchorman, and Alan Judge in the wide midfield areas are some of the potential key players for us. They will surely help us in our challenge for promotion this season

    Coaching Staff:

The coaching staff is a big factor in my saves. Having the right backroom staff in FM I feel is an undervalued thing and I think this also rings true in real life. Having the right people around you in life and your business helps massively in your success. Nonetheless, I decided to ask the board for more coaches and to my amaze, permission granted. My coaching staff is now at 8 rather than...7. But well take all the help we can get. I've decided to let go of all my coaching staff aside from Bryan Klug and Matt Gill who I saw fit to see success with me and this club. My coaching setup focus was on technical ability and fitness as these two traits I believe to be the key areas in developing players and all the rest of tactics and understanding the system will come into place.

From this, I've appointed Turmer Merin as my assistant manager who shares the same understanding for the system as I do, as well as Paul Musselwhite, Chris Greg, Pete Tierney, and Max Wragg to cater for the philosophy I'm looking to impose at the club. This cost me a total of £2775 p/w which is inexpensive considering I've tied them up for multi-year contracts.

Scouts are a major factor in this series. Usually, I do all the scouting work myself however this time around I must listen to my scouting team as stated in the rules when recruiting players. The scouting department is quite bare at the club and so this needs improving. I've decided to instruct the scouting team to focus in on finding players suitable in Germany, Austria, and the Scandinavian region as I feel the type of player to come from this can be implemented quite conveniently and generally suit the general "English league" style of play. Tough, Sturdy, and Brutish characters that have the work rate and natural technical ability to soar us through the divisions as fast as possible. I've gone out and I've hired Steve Hetzke, Gerhard Tremmel, Lars Mrosko, and the famous Patrik Andersson who previously played for Bayern Munich, Malmo, and Barcelona obtaining a UCL Winners Medal, 2 Bundesligas, 2 german cups, a Swedish league title, and 2 german league player of the year accolades in 1995 and 2001. This scouting team should provide some knowledge into the scouting department of the club and help me in my recruitment during the transfer months.

    Transfers:

Right, let's get down to business. The room to recruit in the market is next to none. I have a £284k transfer budget and a £1.59k Wage Budget. I'm looking to offload a player to bring in some depth for the new season and Gwion Edwards is the victim. He was the odd-man-out as he does not fit in my tactical plans and he commands a high fee at this level which will allow me to dip into the transfer market. I immediately improve the scouting package to give our scouts access to find quality talent across Europe. I faced an offer from Leicester for unarguably my best youth prospect at the club, Flynn Downes. And while I understand the rules of the Moneyball system given I decided to decline in hopes I could convince him to stay. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in my attempts, and following this, he had decided handed in a transfer request so while we've secured a large fee for the youngster, a homegrown talent has left our club and this makes me feel, Inconsequential. But again, we move. The key areas that need improvement were Centre Foward, Centre Midfield, and Right Back.

    Recruitment is as follows:

    IN:

    Aaron Connolly, Brighton (Loan)

    Conor Gallagher, Chelsea (Loan)

    Moussa Sylla(Free)

    Michael Schulze(Free)

Miguel Baeza , Celta Vigo(Loan , Opt to buy 725k)

    Out:

    Gwion Edwards(Loan to buy, 550k)

    James Wilson(140k)

    Flynn Downes(10m)

Some really promising young players coming through to play key positions as well as an experienced backup right back to cover. The addition of Connolly and Gallagher will add massive creativity to the squad that was half lacking and Moussa Sylla and will add rotation for the long season which I did not have prior to the season starting. I feel having lots of forwards in the lower leagues is important as certain strikers tend to be hit and miss. I feel with the squad I've got, I have enough to push for promotion.

This will conclude the pre-season write up. The next post will cover from the start of the season to the new year as we aim to challenge at the top of the division.

    Questions regarding the pre-made tactics

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 06:56 PM PDT

Got fm 2020 for free off of epic games store and I realized you can just pick what tactics you want without putting much thought into it. Do people generally use one of the pre-made tactics like Tiki-taka, gegenpress, direct counter attacking, etc. or do they make their own? Should I be looking to make my own tactics or just follow the ones that fm built out for you?
