My save has turned into a bit of a soap opera... Posted: 27 Dec 2019 03:14 PM PST To begin, meet Elliott Bettinelli, Fulham wunderkind and my probably record transfer signing if I ever scrape the cash. I've been in love with this guy for about 18 months in the game now and during my latest bout of swooning at his stats, I noticed something curious about his favoured personnel... Vic... Bettinelli? So I check Vic out and lo and behold - he's Fulham's U18 Goalie Coach. Alright fair enough, but I didn't realise the two were related? Better check out his favoured personnel and... He's not there. But Marcus is. I don't have him scouted, but I am an IGE arsehole, so I check out his FP and it seems like he's on good terms with his dad! Now I'm aware it's probably just coincidence, but it's Midnight in France, I've had a bit of a drink and I like the idea that the game has decided that it's Eastenders and Vic is mad at Elliott for being the product of an affair, who only wanted to grow up to be a goalie like his dad, and in the end settled for being the best striker in London to stick it to his goalkeeping family. Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:55 PM PST Picture this... it's halftime, you're absolutely pounding a bottom table club 3-0. The schedule is very heavy, you see this as a great opportunity to rotate your young CB into the game. 20 minutes into the second half, suddenly your best CB gets a red card, things are now a little nervy. They score the free kick and now you're really starting to get nervous. Your young CB who has only been in for about 30 minutes slides out their striker in the box. Penalty and a red card to go with it. He slots it home. 3-2, down to 9 men, the clock is moving slow. Corner kick in the 94th minute. It's an own goal. 3-3. Your team has managed to impressively throw away a sure 3 points in no time. What luck. [link] [comments]
Positions on Football Manager in need of an overhaul? Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:49 AM PST I've recently been struggling with retraining centre-mids to play in defensive midfield, and attacking midfielders to play in central midfield: frustrated by many of them seemingly unable to reach anything above an 'accomplished' rating in their new position. I think this is such a poor representation of how positions work in football. Players play in particular positions in real life because their attributes suit certain roles, not because they have some innate connection to a certain part of the field. James Milner is thought of as being a versatile player because he has such a well rounded game, and therefore suited to many different roles. He's not able to do a job at left-back because for some reason he inherently has a green circle there. Also, in real life, from one season to the next, it's fairly common for players to get played in completely different positions. Jamie Carragher started off his Liverpool career playing in midfield, having represented England at youth level as a striker (apparently even starting ahead of Emile Heskey!). He then became a sort of of John O'Shea-style versatile fullback, before Benitez arrived and decided that he should really be a centre-back, which is where he went on to enjoy his best years. However, in FM, I'm sure that if you were to boot up a copy from 1999, you would find Carragher locked in as a midfielder; in a 2002 edition he would be strictly a fullback; and in the 2005 edition, only 'natural' as a centre back. The game completely fails to capture the fluidity involved in playing positions. In my opinion, position should be treated more like players' familiarity with match tactics: ie it's something which requires learning/getting used to, without being inherent to the player themselves. I think it would also make it more interesting if newgens appeared with slightly ambiguous bundles of attributes, which you then had a choice of moulding into one particular role or another. Please forgive all the Liverpool player references, but, for instance, Trent Alexander-Arnold famously used to play as a central midfielder, which you can see in terms of his quality on the ball, and while he is now excelling at full-back, there have been discussions about moving him back into midfield, long term. These sorts of dilemmas are almost completely absent from the world represented by FM, and it would add another interesting layer to have to decide whether to mould your 17 year old with great tackling and shooting into a defender or an attacker. Is there any way to stop wingers blasting balls into the side netting? Posted: 27 Dec 2019 03:57 PM PST I feel like it has been about 15 seasons since Tammy Abraham has even touched the ball on the pitch. every time Willian has a chance to square it to Tammy for any easy goal he blasts it into the side netting with the ferocity of a force 12 gale. On the other hand, Tomori has scored some world-class bullet headers so I've crowned him Fikayo Van Dijk. [link] [comments]
