Man this Manager is getting on my nerves. One of my players has been killing it for us in the league, yet he won't get called up for international duty. Do you think this guy is deserving of a call up?

How to beat teams consistently who park the bus to regain form after the mid season slump - Tutorial

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I've been asked and DM'd a few times over the last few weeks to do some instructional posts so figured I'd give it a bash.

Ever started a season strong winning the majority of games? Sitting in European contention and then you get 18-25 games into the season and seem to consistently hit a brick wall and struggle to beat the worst teams in the league? You've gotten on the bus and you didn't even realise it.

    What is the "bus"?

The bus is a defensive philosophy in real world football that is typically employed by weak technical teams. It is the philosophy to park 10 players behind the ball in a low block. A low block has a fairly low line of engagement and a deep defensive line. The thought behind this is to constrict the available shape in the defensive third of the pitch in a narrow block to give the attacking team as few clear cut opportunities as possible because there is no space to pass or run into to create attacking opportunities.

The low block wants an attacking team to get frustrated and commit more and more men to the attack, win the ball back and quickly counter in as few passes as possible. I'm sure you've seen this where its 0-0 against Burnley away playing as a top team and they win a header, play one pass and your team concedes. This is by design.

    Common mistakes

What I see a lot of managers do is simply increase their mentality to attacking, increase the tempo, increase the attacking roles and hope for the best. This is exactly what the low block wants.

By committing more men forward you are increasing the chances of being countered as you have less men in holding roles. More advanced players - less people to be in position to intercept counter moves.

Okay so its bad to simply commit loads of men to attacking roles, so what do you do?

    Tempo

It is imperative to play with a high or much higher tempo in order to break down the block. By slowly passing the defence always has enough bodies to cover. Kill the bus with speed.

    Directness

You must play fairly direct - I usually keep the slider in the middle it seems to be the best balance of not hoofing every ball into the air and not playing too horizontal with passing. If you go too short your players will be unwilling to take any chances and will simply hold possession.

    Possession

People seem to have this obsession with high possession - there's nothing intrinsically wrong with this, the more you have the ball the less chances the opposition get. But as we know the bus is conceding possession to you and all they need is 1 or 2 chances in the game to grab a goal.

You want to consistently attempt to play direct, attacking football where phases/attacks only have 4-5 moves, fail, reset the ball and try again. Any longer and the opposition will have reset into their defensive shape.

    Holding midfielder

You need a holding midfielder, preferably in DM strata to be defensively positioned to intercept the first pass or slow down the first runner enough for you to get defensive support. No holding midfielder - now you're banking on 2-3 CBs to deal with the aerial challenge/through ball which eventually will crack. Typically CBs are slower than CFs, even on poor teams.

    Vertical movement off the ball

This is the key tip to crashing the bus. You need to create vertical runners that overlap - what this does is suck the initial defender to the "passer" who in turn plays a short pass to the "runner" and continues his own run. Two of your players have now taken 1 defender out of the phase and have an overload.

How do you achieve this? Most commonly by in combinations of 2/3 players where you have the more advanced player on a support role and the more defensively positioned player with an attack role.

    Example: An AM(s) with a MEZ(A) behindExample: A DLF(s) with a SS(A) behindExample: An IW(S) with a WB(A) behind

This is how you create space for passes and runs. By sucking in players you create a hole in the defence which now needs to be covered. The position from which the coverer comes from now has a hole which can be exploited with a run.

My favourite combination (if you're playing with one striker) is to run a Support striker with a goal threat runner behind. This is the most effective strategy because the striker comes deep to receive a pass, and if there is no CM/DM to mark your striker, the opposition CB has to track which creates a hole for your goal threat AM to run into, receive a pass and score.

    Attacking support

Attacking support are static/pivot roles who's goal is to recycle possession from the attackers. Typically things like DLP, CM(S), AM(S) etc. You MUST have enough attacking support or you won't be able to recycle failed attacks - which we explained earlier is imperative to maintaining pressure. You don't want every failed attack to be a huge clearance or counter attack. Keep the ball in their half.

I recommend using https://ratemytactic.web.app/ to check this, but don't use it as gospel. The app isnt a golden rule.

    Attacking width

As previously discussed the bus plays narrow in defence to restrict space. You want to stretch play by playing the ball wide to draw wide defenders out of position. I recommend wide/extremely wide

Watch the game to make tweaks

Are your players taking 20 yard shots every attack? Add "Work ball into box".Are your players simply holding possession and not playing any risky balls? Take work ball into box off and increase the risk of ONE OR TWO players (too much risk will see attacks fail too early). Are you getting counter long balls over your defence? Lower your defensive line.

Hopefully this has helped, let me know if anyone is interested in more of these!
