wanted to get some thoughts on my new save idea for fm22

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 06:36 AM PDT

this will take a while to explain and i'm not the best writer so it might be all over the place. but i have an idea for a new save on fm22. my dad used to be a professional footballer, and players for some high profile teams like liverpool, real sociedad and a few other teams. i am planning on following his career as a manager, and trying to replicate it by starting as a manager where he started his playing career, and then going to each club he went to after a certain degree of success at the previous one. he is also in the game as U19's coach so i could take him along with me. another thing is that my older brother is also in the game as a (young) goalkeeper, so i would use the editor to give him 200 PA and let his career go on while i am a manager, and maybe pick him up at one of the clubs i am managing at that time. i just wanted to hear what you guys think and if there's any suggestions on what else i could do. i'll probably use the editor to make them family in game as well

I've never seen comebacks like these before from the AI. 8 goals scored in the last 12 minutes.

If they keep it like this is gonna be a 120-90 at the end of the game

I'm wondering how many people actually create their own tactics?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:08 AM PDT

I always create my own tactics and find it so satisfying when my plan comes together! Just the tactic I wanted, coupled with my recruitment for the best players for that style. Also creating a system for a group of players that are not amazing and defying the odds is so fun to me.

I'm mainly wondering if it is really easier to just go gegenpress and what some of the other tactics you guys have created are?

Moneyball in FM: Starting a play through

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 09:48 AM PDT

A couple recent posts here had me thinking about Moneyball and analytics as it applies to Football Manager. I do my own hobbyist football data analysis, so I'm pretty familiar with the world of sports analytics in general even if I'm not the brightest or most creative person out there.

In order to do a Moneyball save in FM, you first have to understand what makes Moneyball different from simply developing a good team over time. After all, there are plenty of posts about a save where someone takes a minnow and turns them into the champions of Europe. There are some things that differentiate the Moneyball approach from the classic buy low, sell high, and reinvest model that most FM players follow.

Finally it's important to acknowledge that FM is a computer game and not a perfect simulation of real life. It's entirely possible the match engine is not built for the radical approaches of a true Moneyball team. I am going to give it my best shot, and see how it plays out.

What's the most "Moneyball" team in football right now?

If you ask most people who the most "Moneyball" style team in football is today, a lot of people would point to Brentford FC. After all, they have managed to make it to the Premier League on a fairly small budget and are known for using advanced data analytics in their recruitment strategy and approach to the game. While that's true, they still are fundamentally trying to play the game in a similar way to much bigger teams - just doing their best to save money while doing so. Norwich has a similar approach as a small budget team that does their best to maximize spending. Again, just trying to be a team that buys low, sells high, and reinvests better than their peers does not make you a "Moneyball" team.

In reality, it's probably Barnsley. They're a weird team with an ugly play style that still managed to force their way into the playoff with a tiny budget. Billy Beane is a part of the project and Daryl Morey, basketball's foremost data-driven GM, is a big fan of their approach. They're trying to "break" soccer by optimizing for different players and strategies than the traditional ones.

What does it mean to be a Moneyball team?

First and foremost, a Moneyball team is a**small market team*. Sorry, no PSGs for you. It's all about surviving on the barest of margins and making every cent count.

Second is about setting reasonable goals. The Oakland As never won a World Series - and that wasn't the point. They competed well above their spending level, and stabilized a franchise that was known for being absolutely terrible. This is where it gets tricky. It's easy to have cascading successes in FM, and a few good sales and buys and all of a sudden you have one of the best teams in the world. That's not realistic, but it's fun, and kind of the point of FM.

Reasonable people may disagree, but I think the fundamental difference between a "Moneyball" team and a bog standard well run/data informed team is the overall approach to the game. We know that there are certain traits that players need to be successful in top level soccer - and those are traits that you need to pay for. Different positions have different demands as well. So the first tenet of Moneyball is to identify undervalued skillsets and incorporate them into your team. Sure, a pacy advanced forward with 18 finishing could absolutely help you score goals - but the same is true for any other team and the competition is fierce. What attributes seem irrelevant but make a huge difference?

The key way to utilize undervalued skill sets effectively is by having a unique tactical approach to take advantage of those skill sets. Yes, you can run a 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress, just like half the teams in the world. The players who are good in that system are going to cost more, though, and you may not extract the maximum value from your cheap "bad" players.

How I'm going to construct my "Moneyball" save:

There's no wrong way to play Football Manager. I firmly believe this. It's all about enjoyment. For me, trying to do a Moneyball save, I feel like the experience will be most authentic if I do the following:

    • No IGE or save scumming - It's too easy to manipulate results in this game. Moneyball is about reality, and taking the good with the bad.
    • All attributes hidden - The easiest way to do this that I know of is to make the colors dark to the point of unreadability. This means that you are no longer working on full knowledge of the attributes - or even partial. To understand a particular attribute you need to ask your scouts, and you have to use stats to try to identify the best players. It's not perfect - highlighted attributes can reveal stats - but it's close enough to make it not worthwhile to try to figure it out. There's probably a good skin for this out there though.
    • Scouts are fallible - No 20/20 scouts for me. I'm capping JCA and JPA at 15 for any staff I hire. Analysts are different. I want the best ones possible.
    • Use fake players and staff - Again, at this point I have a great knowledge of who is a good player and who is not from being an avid FM player and football fan. I am going to remove all of that knowledge and start from scratch.

I've never done a 5 continent challenge, so I'm going to fold that in as well. Starting with FC Nordsjaelland (though about Midtjylland, the home of Moneyball football, but they're projected to finish 1st). I'll try to update as time goes on.

I just needed to vent somewhere

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 05:39 AM PDT

I just needed to let out my rage and tears for a moment. I used to come home so excited to play FM since FM17. I enjoyed it, was okay at it but it was so satisfying. Then I started my Dordrecht Save this year and it was so much fun. How I struggled but successfully managed to become Eredivisie champions and after 20 years finally becoming Champions League winner.

But never was I good at the game.

I wanted one more adventure before FM22 and I embarked to Havant and Waterlooville. But this safe has actually emotionally hurt me.

I was never good at the game. Not at tactics, management or scouting. Just lucked my way through. But now I am currently breaking Derbys record as the worst premier league team and I have been in heartpain and tears as nothing I do seem to work. Popping up in other saves I have just been losing as well as if I lost my touch of the game I barely had. I have virtually tried every. single. thing. Every advice, every piece of knowledge. But it seems that the game is too hard for me, only getting more discouraged seeing everyone around me become absolute successes and just realizing this game is not for me, and that I should probably quit or take a break which is hard cuz I love the game but I hate the feeling of uselessness it has been giving me.

I highly doubt someone on this page knows the feeling cuz everyone is a great succes but maybe someone slightly understands what I'm going through. Because at this point I have never been more discouraged.

Sorry for the complete rant, just needed it of my chest
