How I became a manager in real life part 4: The final

Link to Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3

It's every manager's dream. Getting to a cup final. One game away from glory and immortality. Whether it's on Football Manager or in real life, a final game is always a massive one. I'd led my team from the verge of disunity and an early exit in the first round all the way to the final with my wit and man-management (and a little help from Godson's 4 goals) and now Platoon 7 is in the NYSC Orientation Camp Final.

Before I continue, sincere apologies for not doing this sooner. I got a lot of messages asking why but long story short is I've been busy with work and business, and my phone got stolen as well. Hopefully you enjoy the story regardless.

After reaching the final my players have every right to be excited. We came back from a defeat in the first round to win 1-0 in the Quarter-Finals as one of the best losers. In the semis we trashed Platoon 6 3-0. The other semifinal is between Platoon 4 and Platoon 5. I scout the game and it looks like Platoon 4 is better at controlling the tempo of the game but Platoon 5 gets more chances mainly on the counter. They miss two or three golden opportunities from the Platoon 4 goalkeeper spilling long shots, but Platoon 4 win 5-4 on penalties. Maybe I'll need to shoot on sight for the final. We'll see.

    The Build-Up

From the next day, when the results are announced at the morning assembly, the pressure starts to mount. Platoon 7 has fallen short in almost every other competition, but we do win the NYSC Festival Parade.

Kabir (2nd from left) and I (4th from left) with the trophy for the parade. It's the same trophy shared for first place in all events.

The female volleyball team scraped through the first round after losing but winning in a play-off, then losing in the second round. In the modelling, cooking and design competitions we don't even come top 3, and we come 4Th in the March Parade contest, meaning we don't get a trophy. Everyone now has pinned our hopes of a successful campaign on the final game. I hate the pressure, I'd rather just focus on the tactics and player welfare. Destiny is looking fit again, but Rukevwe is in a race against time to be fit for the final tomorrow. Two days before the final we finally get the money to buy our own ball for training. We schedule a session before the third-placed match between platoon 6 and 5, and I drill the players on the possession game. The defenders are much better at playing out from the back than the attackers are at scoring, so I join the game as a neutral (i.e. anyone can pass to me and I will pass to a teammate of theirs, but I cannot score) to help even the game out. Halfway through, Andrew boots the ball out in his non-nonsense nature and it hits a couple of fence spikes. Long story short, our ball is gone again. We might actually be cursed. In terms of the third-placed game, Platoon 6 win 1-0 and the goalkeeper who played against us is nowhere to be seen. I can only imagine the trauma he went through, poor lad probably got scared seeing the goalposts again. Throughout the week there has been little to no hype except between the corpers of the two platoons, each boasting and trash-talking about the other. It promises to be a good occasion irrespective of the outcome, and some would say it's a win-win either way: We get some prize money and a trophy if we win or lose, but I'm not having it. I want the victor's trophy, nothing less.

    Judgement Day

On the day of the final, Samuel tells me he's got blisters and isn't sure he can play. I curse my luck but let him know to not push himself. I have to make alternate plans with no other players who can play on the wing. In terms of other players, a minor flu has been going around camp but the players seem fine otherwise. I am confident but nervous. I know we should win this game fairly comfortably, but this is a final, anything can happen. Due to our issues with balls we haven't practised for penalties yet, but we find a ball to borrow and we practice before the game. Godson, Samuel and a few other players do fairly well, scoring most of their penalties, while I and Ezekiel don't do too well with our spot kicks. The crowd is already much bigger than anyone we've had before and it's still almost an hour till kick-off. I get a couple of good luck wishes and tactical advice from people who think they share the same brain with Pep Guardiola. I nod to these people and continue on my way. About 10 minutes before kick-off, the state coordinator for Lagos State shows up with some other important people. It's time to pick the line-ups. That's were the trouble begins.

One of the issues with being coach/manager in a setup like this is that most decisions you make have a level of influence on them. It was there in the semifinal, and again the defenders in the team all came around, asking for me to play Kabir as a CDM. I can see their point, he is a fantastic CDM, but I am of the Conte mould: I am naturally stubborn with my tactics. I agree to it. I'm still recovering from that when Destiny asks me to play Eke Nnanna with the goal of his link-up play helping us. I am not sure about it but I do it to placate our best player. The line-up is similar to what we normally play, the 3-4-1 with Rukevwe just about fit to start, Mazi, Elvis and Andrew in Defense, Kabir and Destiny in Central Midfield, Samuel and Godson on the Flanks and Eke up top.

L-R Eke, Mazi, Rukevwe, Godson, Elvis, Samuel, Kabir, Andrew, Destiny. That's also the ball we borrowed for the warm up.

Ezekiel and Uche are both on the bench, as well as Lawrence, Tamilore and Obi. We've lost a lot of players due to a lack of interest in the fact they weren't playing. But we're the favourites on paper, and before the match I remind the players of this in the warmups. I discuss the player instructions with each of them, especially Kabir, whose job is to go in hard but fair on the opposition # 10. As I walk to the dugout, Tolu, one of our players who stopped coming to matches and training, calls to me. He wants to let me know, if I need a substitute striker, he's available. I think he's trying to pull a fast one on me, but he looks serious. I tell him no problem despite the fact he's dressed in his full camp uniform and I'd probably rather sub myself on like Ryan Giggs did after Moyes got sacked.

We hold a quick team meeting. I try to encourage the team with little success and we pray before the game. The teams go out to meet the state coordinator and I sit down in my dugout along with the rest of my players. Then the ref has the coin toss, and the game kicks off.

As expected, we dominate the game from the get-go. Destiny continues to orchestrate proceedings and Godson and Samuel are doing a lot of damage but from the first half the issue is obvious: Eke isn't in the game. He doesn't press with the wingers, is anonymous in our build-up and misses a shot he rushed rather than leaving it to Samuel. I encourage the players and we continue to bully them, thanks to Kabir's dominating presence against either the Striker or the CAM. We get chances as Mazi and Andrew miss headers from set pieces and a shot is cleared off the line. The game is one-way traffic, until Platoon 4 gets a free kick in our final third. The ball is launched into the box, Rukevwe comes to punch it but is beaten to the ball. Luckily for us, the header falls wide. Andrew and Rukevwe have a spat about it but I calm them down. We're having the same issues we did last time out: we need someone to finish the chances. I'm not sure what to do at half time. Who do I bring on and where do they play? The options are limited and I know the wrong move could destroy the entire team. It's clear Eke can't continue like this so I talk to him during the interval but he just shrugs it off, claiming it's due to a "lack of service". I decide to take him off, just as Afolabi comes to give me some advice. He tells me to move Godson up top, and to bring on Uche to play on the wing. I'm not sure he can play there, but in all honesty it's the only move we have that doesn't involve drastically changing the shape. I make the switch and the game resumes. We instantly look better in our buildup but Uche drifts inside, making our pressing much more difficult to do. He also loses the ball on one or two occasions, and the remarks from the bench are not happy. I shout at him to stay wide, and he does to some extent. Up to this point, Platoon 4 have only had chances through long balls into the box and the trend continues, with a poor clearance setting the ball up perfectly for a volley by one of their midfielders. He catches it well, but Rukevwe is up to the task. Halfway through the second half, we get a goal.

Destiny has the ball in midfield, and he lays it off to Godson. He is surrounded by one or two players but he manages to hold onto the ball and release Uche, who takes a heavy touch, almost loses the ball (again), then rolls the ball into the back of the net. The bench, some of the crowd and our players all run onto the field. We're actually winning the game with less than fifteen minutes to go. It's happening, it's really happening. I praise the players and I resume my place in the dugout. The game's not over yet and I ask my players to concentrate on the task at hand. Platoon 4 come back fighting, launching aerial bombardments into out box. We deal with them fairly well, but the onslaught continues. The bench tells me to make a defensive sub, but I want to continue without putting ourselves under too much pressure. Then it all falls apart as they launch another hit and hope ball towards their striker in the box. He is being marked by Elvis and they are both around the same height. Rukevwe comes for the ball, but gets there late, and the opposition striker nods into an empty net.

I'm stunned into silence. We've lost our lead, and now Andrew and Rukevwe are arguing again. I try to calm them down as play resumes and the opposition surge forward, smelling blood. We conced another free kick and they launch it long, with our defence clearing. From there, the game becomes more balanced, partly thanks to the referee. Samuel is shrugged off the ball unfairly and the ref does nothing but a few seconds later Kabir does the same thing and is booked for it. I've finally lost my composure and go full Warnock, screaming, "Ref! How's that a f*cking foul!" right next to the state coordinator. A few minutes later Rukevwe goes down with an injury. I plan to sub Lawrence on for him, but in an act of mutiny the defence and players on the pitch choose Andrew to go in goal. I didn't know that was allowed but the ref doesn't mind, and Tamilore comes on to play on the left side of defence. The ref also holds up his hand for three extra minutes, and I take of Samuel who looks tired for Ezekiel. He's not happy and he explains he only looks tired to deceive his marker into giving more space to run in behind. Interesting strategy.

A moment later the ref blows for full time. We're going to penalties. I quickly decide on our takers. Godson, Elvis, Kabir, Destiny and Ezekiel. Tamilore tells me he should be allowed to take one and to be fair he did score most if not all of his penalties, but I tell him he'll take sixth one if we go to sudden death.

We go first, with Godson rooting the keeper to the spot with a powerful penalty.

    1-0.

Their player takes it low to Andrew's right. He gets a hand to it, but can't keep it out.

    1-1.

Elvis absolutely blasts it past the keeper who is helpless to stop it going past him.

    2-1 to us.

Andrew doesn't even dive for their next penalty. It's in the back of the net.

    2-2.

Kabir takes an excellent penalty to the keeper's right. It's nerve-wracking. As a coach in real life it was much harder with all the emotions of those around you adding to the tension.

    3-2.

Again Andrew gets a glove on the ball but it goes in. He should be saving those.

    3-3.

Destiny steps up and rolls it in off the post. Their keeper had no chance.

    4-3.

Their player steps up and sends Andrew the opposite way. No one wants to miss.

    4-4.

Then Ezekiel takes his penalty. The keeper sticks a glove to his right and saves it. The crowd go crazy.

    4-4.

Their player steps up, knowing he just needs to score and his team has won. I tell myself he will miss. The bench shouts encouragement to Andrew. But deep down, as I watched the # 10 step up confidently, I already knew the result.

4-5. Andrew doesn't move and the Platoon 4 players run towards him and the keeper. I go first to Ezekiel. Taking such a crucial penalty is always tough and I console him. He's devastated and we all try to cheer him up. We get congratulations from our platoon members and spectators but I feel like I'm watching this from home. This dream of mine has become a nightmare in the space of half an hour. I try to talk to the players who are already leaving. We wait in a line to collect our second place trophy, and look on as Platoon 4 continue to celebrate. Platoon 6 collect their third place trophy and cash prize, then it's our turn. Mazi the captain collects the trophy and we lift it half-heartedly. Godson gets the award for Golden boot with 4 goals in 4 games, and the Platoon 4 goalkeeper gets the golden glove.

Like Wenger and Sanchez in 2017: Me and Godson with the second place trophy an his golden boot.

A squad picture with the trophy

Collecting our prize money: A massive sum of 5,000 Naira. Dejected faces all around.

A half-hearted celebration that was a sign of what could've been.

    The Aftermath

In all honesty this was one of the greatest events of my life. Regardless of the outcome, the opportunity to do what I've been doing in a simulation in real life was surreal to say the least. I learnt a lot about myself and coaching in general. I put so much into this team, and although it was the minor margins that separated us from victory, I can still hold my head proud, and so can they. We got so many messages from spectators and even the opposition about how much we deserved to win, but that's life: you win some and you lose some. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I'm lucky to have made the most of it. I love this group of players to the moon and back. They are, after all, my very own Blue and Black Army.

A quick thank you for reading this far and once again apologies for only doing this now. A word of advice to anyone going into any leadership role, whether as a manager in a sport or something else: learn man management and negotiation skills. These will help take you far. Once again thanks for reading, take care of yourselves, and goodbye.

Biggest win in a competitive match since I have been playing FM. I was in the 3. league with Paris FC, I went out to PSG in in the quarter finals, but still managed to set a record of total 40 goals in the competition (won by 7-0 and 10-0 the next two games). Haaland still got topscoreer with 9.

How to deal with players who totally untrust you and under perform almost on purpose?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 12:19 AM PDT

So i am in this very awkward situation...

i am kind of an experiment guuy, so i started a save, because i wanted to test an inovative style of play and an almost unused formation, and to test out the sucess i could achieve with it, i wanted to start somwhat not as high reputation manager.

So i got just a "national" level, and only half way in terms of "course level manager.

I picked up Barcelona B team to manage, which you may imagine is not easy, despite there are allways some good players in youth system, but many are not good, and the good ones get sometimes anoying loaned out to teams of the same division (how stupid this is... you want to develop players and the stupid AI in your team loans them to another clubs in the same division...)

I had tremendous dificulties, could not sign any players, not even extend the other coaches numbers, basically to get new coaches only by substituiting the terrible stat ones i had avaliable.

But somehow i managed to have a great season... despite playing with right full back being addapted to central back, and another promissing right full back being adapted to a winger right... among other minor adaptations.

I beat the record of points for any team in the same division, promoted Barcelona B squad tothe second highest division, and despite Barcelona's multiple efforts to renew contract and they were 110% happy with me, i announced i would leave in the end of the season...

Now... here's where the problem start.

I sign for Chievo Verona, and because the season in Spain ended up in late June, i barely had time to prepare the new season with Chievo, so for the first season i would need to relly in the players they had more or less, and sign only fundamental improvements.

My "inovative" tactic plays as following.

I use back of 3, wide.... central backs, 2 defensive midfielders, one with destruction ball recovery function, another with build up function, 2 open wingers who play from the midfield as a support for both atack, a playmaker with offensive midfielder setup, and 2 strikers, one poacher and support one

The tactic is solid, the problem is not the tactic, i know it can work,

In the pre-season i basically dominated all the games, despite having lost the first game, because the team was unfamiliar and then i smashed Atalanta at their home for 0 - 4 in a friendly...

I dominated Napoli at Bentegoni in a 0 - 0 where i bascally batteried Napoly with a 30 -2 in atempts and the only reason why i didnt made the Napoli players going home cry in the corner was my strikers completely underperformed and their GK made a huge game.

    Then the season starts...

i dominate Novara for the cup 4-0 at home... the tactic is working, just like it worked in Barcelona B, i have 60% of possession, sometimes more, i have clear positional advantage...

In the first game its a hard one...

I go play at San Siro against Milan... everyone thinking Milan would smash us and easy win...

No no, we dominate Milan, and we draw 1 - 1 , but the Milan goal is obtained by a penalty made by a super experienced player at the 5 minutes, i had to encourage my players again after the goal so they dont got nervous, and we got into the game again, we managed to draw and dominated the second half... i swear the god, we should had won 1 - 3 that game.

Then a game against SPAL at home... and i am think, well no problem, we are going to smash SPAL...

WRONG, again, we dominate the game, but we draw 0 - 0, and here is where i start noticing key players in my team are underforming.

While i have consistant performances by younger less experient players, the suposed better ones with more rating fail-me to win games, either by losing me the game or extremely hard mistakes to understand...

After this the hell gets loose, i lose vs Udinese 3 - 1 with another penalty and a red card, both from experienced players and both when the players had instruction to avoid tackling hard to avoid fauls.

overall bad performance by older players, decent / good performance by younger less experient ones.

From here it only got worse, the team play became more and more inconssitant, as their morale also droped, and by the 7th standing, i was 17th in the league. with no victories yet...

despite having 60% of possession, and more atempts on the goal than my opponents in every game.

in 7 games my team concended 5 penalties, got 2 red cards, and i barely remember a game of an older player that had been god.

i started looking into the players profiles and in the information... all the older ones, the more influencing ones, were against the manager.

saying quote "they feel the lack of support for the manager is fairly justified"

from the squad 13 of more high influence players were against me the entire time... since i signed

i had saved the game just before the board announcement... and i opened the save again and this players were allready not trusting me since the beggining...

Its not like i did something to them and then they started burning me on purpose so i got axed.

Its a clear sign of when a club signs a new manager, and the squad doesnt even give him a chance.

So what do you do to a situation like this?

is there a way to earn this players trust? because the pre-season was extremely good, we dominated, first 3 official games as well, very good, despite drawing the first 2 league games completly due to bad individual performance.

when i click dynamics in my team, right at the beggining they dont trust me...

    So would you do?

get rid of this players? but i dont want too..Because i want to develop youngsters, older players are needed for that...

i also need some squad leadership,

i did everything, i encouraged the squad even when they underperformed, and started lose in the sequence, and its almost like this influencial players have a personal problem..

Its almost like it was a bug, of the squad being against the previoous manager, and then the sitaution didnt changed when i was signed.

damn, what can i do? critcize their conduct right at the beggining? move them to the under 20 squad for a week so they low up their balls?

    What would you do?
