Surprised to Learn I Make More Money in Away Friendlies Than at Home

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:30 PM PST

I ran a test because I got confused as to whether I pay the "fee" for Away friendly games, and found conflicting answers via Google. So this may be obvious to many of you, but it's not for me.

I run the Forest Green Rovers, currently in England's Championship.

Their stadium is small, only 5000 seats.

The biggest difference I've seen between Fee and Income on a Home friendly for me is about $40K, which I'm sure is due to my small stadium.

So I ran a test with a friendly against Sheff Wednesday, which has a similar team rep and also plays in the Championship: Will I get more money from an Away friendly, where the Fee and Income were both $85K? Or Will I make more from a Home friendly where the fee was $48K and the Income was $90K?

I took down my team's account balance, and the "Last Month" column of Income and Expenditure both immediately before and immediately after the match.

    • Away Friendly: Estimated $84K Fee and Income. Result: Profit of $99,833.
    • Home Friendly: Estimate $48K Fee, $90K Income. Result: Net Loss of $17,149.

What I learned running the test:

    • For away games, I did not pay the "fee". I received the stated Income, plus a $23K cut of gate receipts
    • The only expenses I paid for the game: $3570 in travel costs, $4600 in VAT tax.
    • For the Home game, I filled 3985/5000 seats. Took in $77K in gate receipts + $8200 Match Day Income + $1300 Corporate facility income
    • For the Home game, I paid out $62,500 in "other" expenses -- this is the $48K fee, plus what I assume is Sheff Wed's cut of gate receipts. Also paid out $25,967 in Match Day Expenses, and paid $15,500 in VAT tax.

So I did bring in about $90K income for the home friendly ($86,700), but my expenses totaled $104K.

I also ran the same test with a Similar rep foreign club, Paris SG2.

    • Away Friendly: Fee and Income - $16,447. Net Profit of $7100. (And this was after travel costs of $10,700)
    • Home Friendly: Fee of $23K, Income of $40K. Net Profit of $4500.

As a result, if I'm running friendlies against good reputation clubs for income, the lack of expenses for an Away game might result in me making a lot more money on the road -- until my stadium can expand and/or my club starts charging more per ticket.

(I trust people will point it out to me if I'm missing something big that changes the equation here)

Cleocir—Probably the most ridiculous Regen I can find in the entire save right now, and he’s mine.
