My experience of managing an amateur club for the first time

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:21 PM PDT

As per the norm of my Football Manager save, I start unemployed and without any coaching qualifications with Sunday League footballer rep. I normally take charge of a semi-pro team as far down as possible, by applying to a team without a manager, with the aim of working my way up and gaining my qualifications. My aim is very straight forward with a main goal. Build up experience from the bottom, gain my qualifications with the main goal being, to become manager of Everton when good enough. Secondary goal is to manage in Europe.

This time was different. I loaded up a level 16 database (normally I always go 19 or lower, but for whatever reason this database proved to be unstable and the game either crashed/froze so after multiple save attempts I gave up and plumped for level 16), and instead of applying for jobs I waited and just accepted the first one that was offered, which turned out to be Millwey Rise of the Devon and Exeter League Division Four. It's a league I've never managed in, and also an area of the country I have virtually no knowledge of, so thought "why not?". Can only increase my footballing knowledge further.

And it's, without doubt, turning out to be the most enjoyable save I've had in all the time I've played Football Manager. The quality of football is so truly awful, can't afford scouts so having to wing it with new signings, the training facilities are absolute trash, the players are absolutely awful, the pitch quality becomes terrible after a few games and waterlogged during bad weather-but I'm having an absolute blast.

So far I've managed back to back titles, winning Devon and Exeter League Divisions Four and Three, just gone through a season undefeated, but the thing I've really enjoyed is watching every single match-even the friendlies. You could be getting absolutely pegged back for 85 minutes, watch your team do some absolutely atrocious passing, see some woeful defending, but suddenly your 19 year old striker can suddenly score an absolute humdinger from no-where (causing you to yell and punch the air) in the 91st minute, and you go on to win the game. The games are literal emotional rollercoasters, one minute punching the air when scoring a goal or swearing like a trooper when they get the 93rd minute equalizer. It's safe to say at times I'm on the verge of discovering new swear words lol.

The hardest parts were without doubt the tactics, trying to hold on to my players as other clubs would circle like vultures trying to pinch my best players (remember with amateur contracts there's no fees), and also mentally trying to keep them focused, and stomping out complacency and disinterest when things were going too well/badly. There was also the problem of match fitness, as I was thrown a curve ball in those divisions. After a certain point the schedule changed from weekly fixtures to fortnightly fixtures, so I had to arrange friendly matches to keep players match fit, as throwing them into under 18 & 23 matches wasn't enough, but yet still had to make sure I didn't risk injury so it was a very fine balancing act-it's things like that I had no idea about at that level, and was a pleasant discovery.

Going into amateur management instead of semi-pro management has been a revelation, and I highly recommend it-can also make for a great story or blog.

    Unrealistic board expectations

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:03 PM PDT

So I've got this save where I took a team from the national league to the Prem, won titles, won CL etc. As soon as I won it all, I got bored, resigned and applied mis-season for PNE, who were 23rd in the championship at that point.

I manage to beat the drop and next season the board say the minimum expectation is to make the playoffs. What? I somehow finish top to get back to the PL, clearly overachieving at this stage. Btw media prediction was 7th for this season.

Next season in the PL, things get weirder. I've got one of the worst squads, media prediction is 19th, yet the board want at least a mid-table finish. Wtf??

Again, I beat the drop and finish 15th in the PL, board's not happy, position is down to stable.

Next season mp is 17th and I've got a squad that looks likely to avoid a relegation battle. Min. expectation is now a top half finish.

Why does that keep happening? Anyone else facing unrealistic expectations every year?
