Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

Also, please remember that the team suggestion thread can be found in the sidebar, so please use that and give your suggestions to people there too!

    Me:

Takes a chance on signing undersized 1-star kid unceremoniously released by St. Gallen. Kid has decent speed and ok passing skills, but not much else.

Closely monitors training over next few years: varying training intensity, having him develop new attributes, and changing his position.

Brings kid up to the senior squad early to help him gain experience, starting with spot duty and eventually increasing his time to squad player.

Nods approvingly, Miyagi style, as—5 years later—kid eventually develops into a solid 3-star player.

Officially assigns the kid 'captain' for the start of the 2028-29 season.

    Kid:

Immediately sides with 2-star player demanding more playing time, wreaking havoc in the locker room and destroying club dynamic.

X: "I don't think I've been playing all that well."

Me: "Okay let's agree to disagree!"

X: "I CANNOT DROP THIS I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID IT I WILL NOW BE UNHAPPY FOREVER AND MAKE SURE ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS IN THE TEAM HATE YOU AS WELL."

Using height, weight, and BMI to search for potential starters

    Posted: 12 Apr 2022 07:35 PM PDT

Using height, weight, and BMI to search for potential starters

I'm disappointed how the last couple of threads I've seen in the past few weeks talking about using height only focus on the jumping reach attribute, instead of how we can actually use these.

TL;DR Use height and weight when you don't have scouting knowledge to filter down a list, once you know the attributes height and weight are not nearly as important anymore.

Scenario: I stumbled into serie A, I'm going back down at the end of the season, and I want to bring in some D(C)s on the cheap because my payroll will be ugly.

    https://preview.redd.it/3t1ch5e3f7t81.png?width=411&format=png&auto=webp&s=2df294ec61199e4f52f2a6ebec755758cbb26784

I look at the player search and I know of about 540 D(C)s without a contract, but only have scouting knowledge on 15 of them. I could trial 5 of them a week every week for the next 6 months to get knowledge of about 150 of them, but I don't know anything about these players, so how do I increase my chances of finding the good players that can start for me in serie B?

What I have done in the past is sort by height and weight to get this list of 540 down to like 20-50 or so, then use other filtering to get it down under 10 so I can offer trials.

I like to use both height and weight because BMI is a pretty good indication that a player will have a good mix of strength and speed, instead of just having a bunch of speedy midgets and lumbering giants.

To create raw data to make some graphs I started a new game of FM21, head coach of Man City, attribute masking off, and I went over to the player search and started using the "FM menu > print screen" for players in English divisions. I got 2965 players that these graphs are based off of, and that is all the patience I had, since the print screen caps out at 275 players, so I had to keep filtering by english division and age to create this list of 3k players.

First, the average BMI in my data (and probably the game) is 22.5. For a 6'0" (183cm) player, this is 165 lbs (75kg). Average height is somewhere between 5'-10" and 6' 1"

For those that don't know, BMI is calculated by kg/(cm^2). If you are using freedom units it is 703*(lbs/(in^2))

    https://preview.redd.it/pphsys4rg7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=c84582a14e53655270b9db1a14a6c9ea506e106d

    https://preview.redd.it/kt0tm9uah7t81.png?width=832&format=png&auto=webp&s=b20e0920bc926c08b278faad1ec26a596596873e

Second, the 2 graphs that are most relevant, total physical stats vs BMI & total vs height. The total physical stats are a simple addition of all the physical attributes, so no mental or technical attributes were used in this testing (which is fine, that is the point of the trial).

    https://preview.redd.it/wl2696jlg7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=121611b3bb041ad79cb017be4f10f545573eff96

    https://preview.redd.it/z6m24tamg7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=38fbb0110f294a8d5136c73eac53cddc7748a29d

They are similar but there is an important difference. BMI takes off above average, but obviously it falls off hard once it gets too high (not shown in the graphs because of low player count). total vs. height is much more plateau-y than I would like, and it is hard to shake how much heavy lifting jumping reach is doing at the taller heights, since it is an exponential-ish relationship, while jumping reach is not correlated at all with BMI, meaning that the other physicals are higher on average.

    https://preview.redd.it/xj9dyf2rh7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=a262cb2a64cf2ef63451c14faac793c4fec75581

    https://preview.redd.it/tkdgef26i7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5533e7fb7e489e21fbdc15f97a6c129c0ded721

BMI is similar to height but it is important to show that slightly heavier than average players at any height do have the advantage in strength, stamina, and balance, but disadvantage in speed.

    https://preview.redd.it/mwgzjcz0i7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=59338f87a150a3dd63131a11b749d3c7e1aace62

    https://preview.redd.it/k7dvl3tai7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=82aad4888167fa9f66a85fbab9d920528403df84

    https://preview.redd.it/7rnru9gbi7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=13d740fbaebbf77f78884a5c348b259e870e7978

final graph is age vs. BMI, to show that this method will really only single out players in their prime, you won't find kids this way. I didn't even include 16 or 17 year olds in this simply because of player count issues (there are a ton of them). if it was easier to export the data I would include them, but again, no patience.

We can see that the youngest age to have an average BMI over the average of 22.5 are the 25 year olds.

    https://preview.redd.it/62ze01uli7t81.png?width=776&format=png&auto=webp&s=114a8cfa9399c97ceda2fe9e564d32a509beb23f

Like I said at the top, height and weight don't help once you can see the attributes and your scouts give the player a grade. I'm using them to intelligently offer trials to players I have literally no data on (in game), and while I don't find many starting 11 players I find this way, I do find a ton of serie B squad players (starting 2 games in 5 roughly) quality, and I can sign them to cheap 2 year prove it deals, saving me some cash.

Managers that have left your club after years, how is it now doing?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 12:59 AM PDT

You managed a club for years and brought it to the top, you left for something new. Who was your replacement? Is your club still close to the top or have they gone and fucked it all up? I'm thinking of leaving my club for an experiment to see how it'll be 3 years in the future but the simulation will take many hours and I'm kinda bored.

Why do people obsess over height so much in this sub?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2022 05:00 AM PDT

I thought it was well established that jumping reach is what is critical in terms of jumping height; a shorter player with higher jumping reach is better if every other stat is identical.

In game tips say this, and people used to test this as well and it had the same result.

Is there an advantage of height that I'm not aware of? Or has this changed in recent years? Or are people simply not aware of this?
