Decided to sign Giroud after being able to afford his wages after somehow winning the FA Cup with Charlton. 2 weeks later, he retired without playing a single game for me. Thanks Giroud

Should I sell my star player for 241 million euro with a large chunk upfront? He has been the most insane striker ive ever seen but this is massive money. More details in comments

Am I a genius or a moron? I genuinely cannot tell yet. (How I'm snagging prem standard players in League 1)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 08:46 AM PDT

I'm in a save with Bradford city in the 3rd tier of British football. I'm winning the league and looking at back-to-back promotions but obviously my player quality isn't up to snuff, and I'm getting by on tactics alone.

However, I recently had the idea to loan in championship and prem standard players. Easier said than done. Many refuse because of our lack of stature and inability to chip in on wages or pay loan fees.

To skirt around this I've come up with the idea to pay MASSIVE non-playing fees, (500k a month or more) with me paying nothing in other areas. Obviously, I can't pay that much, but if I start them every week (which I was already gonna do) I essentially get a massive player on loan for free; or at least that's my reasoning.

My question is if this is going to blow up in my face or not. I don't know how it would but that is why I'm asking yall. Has anyone else ever tried this before? Did it work for you?

I'm writing my thesis about emotional attachment to NPCs in Football Manager

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 07:06 AM PDT

    Hi fellow gaffers!

    • quick disclaimer: sorry if this breaks any subreddit rules, and I'm not sure if any flairs were appropriate for this post.

I'm writing my master's thesis on the topic of emotional attachment to non-player characters (i.e. non human-controlled characters) and I'm extremely interested in hearing about your most memorable players, including any and all interactions that have contributed to the emotional attachment that you may have towards your player(s).

My aim is to carry out 15 interviews, unstructured, to ask about your playing experiences and the most memorable interactions with your players and how (if it exists) emotional attachment, in various ways, to your players can form within the context of football manager.

My topic was inspired by a few players I've managed, here are a couple examples I have:

    1. Eduardo Ratinho (newgen): I bought ratinho to Arsenal about 7 seasons ago as a back-up right back. At one point when he was breaking through to the first team, I got a message in my inbox that Ratinho missed training due to being clubbing late the night before. I fined him, and would you believe it, he did it again 2 weeks later. I decided if it happened a third time I would terminate his contract. After the 2nd time fining him, he didn't do it a third time, and I let him prove himself in the first team. About 4 seasons later and he was the highest rated player in a premier league winning season! Those emails about him clubbing and missing training was a turning point in my relationship with this player, and he put his head down and proved himself, and now I can't imagine anyone else playing right back.
    2. Erling Haaland: absolute legend at Arsenal, scoring almost 1:1 goals for games in the league for 300 games. Towards his peak years, two years in a row, at the start of a season he would get homesick. I suggested he take a break, and I let him go for a month, usually risking some good form in the start of the season, because if anyone deserved a break, goal machine haaland gets what he asks for. Each time he would come back fresh and start banging in goals. He'll get to retire in my team if he wishes, but will be allowed to do whatever he wants.
    3. Yannic Rapp (another newgen): Bough rapp when he was 17, he turned into a free-kick maestro. about 7 years later and he's starting every game, scoring 7-8 freekicks a season. Then he comes out as gay in the media, and I thought it was super brave considering the real context of stigma of homosexuality in football, and ever since that I was just emotionally invested in supporting Yannic throughout his career. I eventually let him leave on a free to Barcelona since he was so eager to go and they promised to make him a star player. That hurt, but I still check up on him every so often.

Send me a message or let me know if you would be interested in participating, or if you happen to know somebody that might have some interesting stories related to this topic!

    Thanks!
