why am I so dog shit at this game?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 12:15 PM PDT

I chose spurs and got sacked within a few months twice. I essentially cant win any premier league games but do fine in all other competitions, even against premier league teams. You start with 13 million quid but mediocre players all cost 70 million or more? Ok so I go on with the bog standard team and set them up just how they play irl and they just arent having it. I must be doing something glaringly wrong. My blood pressure is through the roof

How to utilize the 2-3-5 in possession - Man City replication

How to utilize the 2-3-5 in possession - Man City replication

Pep Guardiola has created an elite attacking philosophy. Pep's vision is to use a "grid system" which splits the pitch into 5 key areas when his team is in controlled possession (counter attacks are an exception).

    1. Central area
    2. 2 half spaces either side of the central area
    3. 2 wings either side of each half space

    Pep's grid system

He instructs his players to (mostly) never have two players in the same grid zone when attacking. Now obviously, overlaps, underlaps and overloads will occur organically but the thought behind 1 player per zone is to simultaneously stretch the oppositions block to pull players out of space (by being in a wide shape) but providing enough attacking support (pivots) to be able to never be caught out of possession, and to recycle possession when an attack breaks down.

Man City in attack (few seasons old)

The system is far more nuanced than that with players swapping roles/positions but for what the FM match engine can handle, lets just focus on this core principle and attacking shape.

    The tactic

    Tactic

Just like Pep I have set my team up in a 433 shape, but the attacking shape can be achieved with any formation. I've done it in a 352 or even a 442 (with some difficulty). The 433 is the easiest because it has a front 3 covering the wide and central zones, all you have to do then is set your 2 players in the channels - Mezzalla works perfectly here or just have a player with the moves into channels trait.

The midfield pivot sits still and recycles possession and the two IWB cut inside and sit alongside, slightly wider than a CM would to provide the second line of attack - this provides stability against the counter and allows you to control possession.

If an attack completely breaks down the second line of 3 can easily switch the ball back to the two CBs, wait for people to get back into their shape and start the attack again.

    2-3-5 in attack pass map

The 235 shape in attack creates a lot of passing triangles, has superb width whilst keeping your players relatively close enough to pass to each other without going long and is a great system for controlling possession and scoring really fun, fluid goals.

The A. Bilbao challenge is the most fun I’ve had in FM22.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 03:20 PM PDT

So, I've just bought FM22. Having started an A. Bilbao save at the end of FM21, I felt it right to finish a mission I had begun.

For anyone who doesn't know, Bilbao can only sign players who are Basque, or Spanish and under the age of 17 (as they will then become Basque). This is the equivalent of a team like Crystal Palace only being able to sign players from London - hence why is it a difficult challenge.

So, inspired by the Super League collapse, I decided to try and show the world how a football club can be run and compete at the top level without billions in the bank, and build a foundation that allowed this to continue for many years to come to the ESL is less likely to revive in the future (even tho it's pretend)

So, my overall game plan was to basically do everything in my power to make the players I had play as well as possible. I completely overhauled the coaching staff, upgraded all facilities and youth coaching ASAP and cut back massively on scouting - a bold choice which I feel paid off.

Tactics: Throughout the save, I took inspiration from La Masia and played a tiki-taka style with Total Football in mind. 4-3-3 Dm wide, SK, BPD's, CWB's, DLP, two Mezzala's (different, but effective) 2 IW's and a CF.

Signings: obviously I was very restricted with players coming in, therefore I decided to base my policy on Spanish players 16 and under. With this in mind, my only real noticeable signing in my first and second seasons was Gavi on loan - one of my best decisions on this save. Few players left, so I could have as many options as possible in a restrictive scenario.

Achievements: First season, finished 3rd in La Liga, with us predicted to finish 9th. Won the Supercopa, got to the semis in Copa del Ray. Absolutely buzzing we managed to get European football.

Second season, things get even better. Won the league on the last day of the season, clinching it from Real on the last day of the season. Scenes. Lost in the final of the Supercopa to Real, but won the Copa del Ray - against non other than Real Madrid. Ancelloti was getting of me. Got the last 16 of champs but knocked out by Man Utd. I didn't care, Bilbao had done the double.

Third Season - Things get crazy. Started off by signing Azpilicueta. Won the league on the last day of the season, clinching it from Real on the last day of the season. Again. Ancelloti loses his job. I lost the Supercopa final to Barca. Won the Copa del Ray against our rivals, Sociedad. Even more scenes. Here's the best bit - the mighty Bilbao had reached the champions league final. In a run that saw us knock out Juve, Man Utd and Man City; we faced Liverpool in the final. In a game where we were dominated, my Captain Muniain scores a last minute equaliser. However, in a pen shootout that didn't feel unlike England's Euro 2020 final, we lose to Liverpool on pens.

Now, I had a choice. I could've either tried (but probably fail) to better that season, or leave on a high. Although this was such a tough decision, I felt that my objective was completed - Bilbao's facilities were maxed out, with a great squad and excellent coaches working with promising youngsters. I thought I had done all I could, and only another manager could take them further.

So, at the start of the fourth season, I took the Inter job. Currently top of the league with 12 games played. I'm enjoying it - Bilbao appoint Tuchel as their next manager, and are sat 6th. Considering any change of manager is a process, I am happy as it shows the foundations I have built are looking strong- further satisfying my mission.

For anyone who has read this far, thanks so much. And please, give this challenge a go. If anyone wins the champions league, I will marry them. FUCK THE ESL

Hi! Im playing a network game so we have our highlights on Key. However I will have 0 highlights but I'm unable to see what's wrong? Is there an in-game analysis location like the data hub? Where will I be able to see pass maps, average position etc etc?

Is FM22 worth buying if I don't have countless of hours to spend on it?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 01:06 AM PDT

So I was thinking of getting FM22 on my laptop for quite a while now and the sale is about to end so I just wanted to know if it would be worth buying if I don't have a lot free time. I'm a fan of career mode on FIFA and I've been watching FM content for a few months and it look amazing. But I'd say I only have like 3-10 hours a week to play.

So I'm wondering if that would be enough to play, learn and enjoy the game

    Best time to sign staff?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 05:17 PM PDT

Is there a certain time of year where your talent pool for staff signings is at it's peak? Obviously I expect things to surge around end of contracts, but is there a notable increase in the level of talent you can sign at that point? Is there a mechanic similar to transfer season where it's better to be looking ~6 mo ahead of expiration? Generally when's the best time to try and find staff?

Bonus: is placing an advert for staff worthwhile? I almost always used the staff search to find my coaches, but maybe I'm missing out.
