I saw that the two times that I have completed a season, I tend to take a week or two off from FM and then head back into it. I think for me I get burnt out. Do you take a break or do you just head straight into it?

    Klopp-ball on FM22

    Posted: 09 Mar 2022 09:55 AM PST

Jurgen Klopp has always been my fav manager, i like the man, i like the kind of football he plays.

    Klopp

I am kind of 4-3-3 purist, i never liked playing with funky formations. I tried emulating Liverpool tactics in Football manager over the years. I managed to be successful but never really came close to re-creating it fully to the last part of it untill this year where after few trial and errors, i mange to not only create a tactic i love watching but also one that has given me breath-taking results.

    Formation

I have played PL(Man united), La liga (Barcelona) & Eredivisie (Feyenoord) with this tactic and managed to go unbeaten & smash goalscoring records in all of those leagues.

    So let's dive into it

There are Three Key aspects of Kloppball at Liverpool

    1) Fullbacks as chief creators - High no of key passes & Assists from them 2) Dynamic & Industrious Midfield - Basic function to recycle the ball 3) Intense but smart pressing - Create pressing traps

I am dividing this tactic into three parts * Player roles & PIs * Team instructions * Off the ball or Opposition instructions

    Player roles & PIs

    Defence

GK = SK(s) pretty self explanatory CB pairing = One on BPD (d) & other on CD (d) with no PIs LB and RB = Fullbacks on automatic

Now this has been crucial role to nail as it's most imp role for the Kloppball at Liverpool.

Fullback is very under-rated role in the game because you can mould it any way you want.

We are not using Wingbacks or CWBs because they come with lots of hard-coded PIs like roam from position, Stay wider or Go to byline etc.

We need a role which produces something like this

    TAA Chance creation

Fullback on automatic with PIs - Gets further forward, Cross more often & Take more risks

With having both the buttons of - Cross from byline and Cross from Deep active you will see your FBs making all kind of passes. Some through balls, Some from deep, And some from bylines.

We are asking them to take more risk and Spam crosses coz Klopp says the same

    Take more risk

    DM = DM(d)

    Midfield

Fabinho's main role is to keep it simple, just screen the defence. We could have used Halfback too but as TAA said in recent interview they like having Fabinho in front of CBs and not necessarily going between them to make it a back 3

    TAA on Fabinho

    CMs = Carrilero

Just like Fullbacks, another one of those Underrated role of the game. Carrilero can be whatever you want them to be.

We are not using any playmaker in the middle because in the Game playmaker tends to gravitate towards the ball too much, and likes to be in the ball. We don't need that, we need our midfielder to be always moving the ball without hogging it.

Carrilero with PIs - Mark tighter, Shoots less often & Take more risk (TMR on any one CM you think is more creative)

While SLO & TME are self explanatory, Why Mark tighter? I will explain that in OIs

With Carrilero and IFs + FB in automatic we'll be able to create the kind of rotation on the flanks liverpool creates.

    TAA on salah

    Attackers

IFs and Striker - IF(a) & DLF(s) with tackle harder on all three of them

Yes that's it, you don't need anything else.

In the end our on the ball formation should look something like

    OTB formation

    Passmap from the game

    2) Team instructions

    OTB TIs

Attacking width is set to fairly narrow because Gegenpress is always played with narrow width.

As Pep Guardiola pointed out in recent press conference

    Pep

All the German managers loves playing inside (narrow)

Approach play - Pass into space

I have kept Pass into space active to encourage those rapid counter attacks which our IFs can take advantage off

Passing directions - Slightly more direct

Liverpool is best and most threatening team to play on transitions. They do not play more passes but motto always is to get the ball forward as quick as possible which is kinda core philosophy of Gegenpress.

    Hence, No shorter passing

Tempo - Higher and rest are pretty self explanatory

    (In transition play)

    In transition

All of the above instructions are pretty self explanatory

    (out of possession)

    Out of possession

We play with much higher line of engagement & higher defensive line with Offside trap to compliment it

Pressing intensity - More often (As i mentioned earlier, Intense but smart pressing)

    3) Opposition instructions

This is the most important sauce of the tactic

    OIs

It may feel bit overwhelming but it is pretty simple

First of all - Tackler harder to all of the Def and Mids (Don't worry, we have been always ranked bottom in fouls and cards so this does not increase that risk)

Always press - Fullbacks & Wingbacks plus show them on their opp foot

Mark tighter - All of the Midfielders except lone midfielders like DM & CAM

Now I mentioned earlier why I have set Mark tighter as PI on our Carrileros, Have a look at below image

    Off the ball pressing

Two CMs of opp team are always supposed to be Marked tighter.

That is that fellas, I hope you liked it. I would love it if you try this tactic and let me know how it goes, One thing i can tell you is it's fun, football you'll watch is fun & you'll never be short of goals.

In the end, I will like to give few quick tips regarding player selection.

Try to have DM and CBs with good height and aerials. Try to have IFs with good pace, and atleast one with good finishing who can be primary source for goals.

Some important notes on scouting and acquiring knowledge

    Posted: 09 Mar 2022 11:26 AM PST

Some important notes on scouting and acquiring knowledge

I recently watched Zealand's video on scouting knowledge in FM and was interested in the results he found. The tl;dr was that scouting (and region scouting specifically) doesn't work as well as we would hope, and certain assumptions many of us have about how scouts work and how knowledge is acquired are false.

I'm a big fan of scouting in FM and love setting up my assignments manually to try and find emerging wonderkids from around the world (I've posted before about my scouting network in my Arsenal save here and here). I'm in 2027 in my current save and have 32 scouts at my disposal, yet despite spending lots of time and effort building what I hoped would be an effective, worldwide scouting network, I found that my scouts were returning relatively few scout reports and acquiring little to no additional knowledge for some regions.

I therefore decided to set up a test to try and learn more about how scouting works in FM22 and how I can get better at it.

    The test

While in the past I had previously sent most of my scouts on multi-country, "Ongoing" assignments, I decided for the purpose of the test I would send scouts to a single country and set the assignment timeline to "Until finished". I had read that setting the assignment to "Until finished" rather than "Ongoing" was key in having a scout stay in a country and work there until their knowledge of that nation was greatly improved.

I also decided to not set any parameters for my searches, allowing scouts to recommend any players they chose to in their reports. Some scouts would visit nations they already had significant knowledge of; others would go to places they had no knowledge at all. In terms of languages spoken, some had the advantage (on paper) of speaking the native language and others did not.

The first phase of the test would run from January to June 2027, giving scouts six months to spend in their designated countries.

    The results

    https://preview.redd.it/k6ctvksvoem81.png?width=1728&format=png&auto=webp&s=0aebeff04d783344d667ce4d434e9295797af6a1

I tracked results in the above spreadsheet, with the "Knowledge" column representing each scout's knowledge of their assigned nation in January and "Knowledge 1" their knowledge in June. The "Change" column represents how much each scout's knowledge improved over the six month period.

I'm sure from a quick glance some obvious takeaways can be seen, but I'll break them down with more context below.

    Scouts need matches to watch

This has been the case for a few versions of Football Manager now but is worth highlighting due to its importance. If you send a scout to a country where matches are being played, they will attend them and gain knowledge. If there aren't, then the knowledge they acquire will be minimal at best. You can see that many scouts who visited countries where no league was loaded gained no knowledge of that nation at all, including the likes of Iran, Jordan, Haiti, and Uzbekistan.

Thankfully, if there are games to go and see, scouting knowledge increases quickly. A good example of this is Stéphane Chapuisat, who had no knowledge of Austria prior to the experiment but saw a 52% increase of his knowledge of the country by June. I have the Austrian Bundesliga loaded as playable and there was no shortage of games to go and see.

Playable v View-only makes little difference

Perhaps the most encouraging takeaway I got from this short experiment is that scouts still acquire knowledge of a nation when the league is set to view-only rather than playable. Note that having a league playable instead of view-only has other benefits, however, such as how many players are loaded there and more realistic transfers take place.

I sent Toni Lima to Spain, where La Liga is fully playable, and Neil McGuinness to Ireland where the first division is set to view-only; both scouts saw a 33% uptick in their knowledge of their respective countries. I had worried that by setting a country to be a view-only nation the rate at which knowledge is acquired would be much slower, but this does not seem to be the case.

    Continental and international competitions matter

While the scouts I sent to countries with no league loaded return disappointing results, with 0% or 1% changes across the board, there were two outliers. I noticed that Antonio Mur's knowledge of Paraguay had increased from 60% to 75% despite the Paraguayan league not being loaded, and on closer inspection I saw that he had been able to watch plenty of games featuring clubs from Paraguay through their participation in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

As an example, he had been able to watch Club Libertad four times in that period, with them having played ten games between January and June in South America's continental club competitions:

    https://preview.redd.it/3qwn2fj2rem81.png?width=1122&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7b3b15bb70137a9ce79aea674f87ecf3d4d76f9

    https://preview.redd.it/nd8hhgn3rem81.png?width=1838&format=png&auto=webp&s=e99e9ec0c7df43e141d499987702b404080e590b

It's therefore still possible to acquire knowledge from nations with no domestic league loaded who have some clubs in continental competitions, especially if they have clubs capable of going far in these tournaments and playing plenty of games.

I also saw that Enis Hajri's knowledge of Algeria had jumped 10%, although at first I wasn't clear why. I also noticed he'd only been to watch an Algerian side play once and had instead gone to watch a number of other international youth sides instead:

    https://preview.redd.it/4rsmqgkfrem81.png?width=1126&format=png&auto=webp&s=44961ff7424d1d5fb58139d233f1e22e45a575ba

After closer inspection, it soon dawned on me that the reason he had watched all of these U20 sides play was because Algeria had hosted the U20 FIFA World Cup in March. Interestingly, his knowledge only increased for Algeria, despite only seeing Algeria U20s play once and the likes of Iceland's U20s four times (his knowledge of Iceland remains at 0%).

Scouts don't behave as you might want them to

The most frustrating discovery I made during this process was seeing that scouts sometimes just don't bother going to watch matches they should be watching. Rohit Chand, for example, was assigned to India and didn't bother to go see a single game in this time period.

This was in spite of the fact that India's senior side played four games during this time (all of which were at home), while the U23s and U19s played ten times between them. There seemed to be no participation in continental Asian club tournaments between January and June, but the fact that he didn't go and watch the national side at least once made no sense to me. Other scouts who were scouting smaller nations did seem to go and watch the national sides play on occasion, at least (e.g. Maurizio Sarri went to watch San Marino play two international games).

    Conclusion

Games matter. Scouts will not go and visit the academies of top clubs in the countries you send them to and report back on the best talents there; they will only gain knowledge and submit scout reports of players who they can actually watch in games. This of course makes it difficult, if not impossible, to scout a significant portion of countries around the world.

There are still things I don't know, such as whether or not speaking the language matters (note: scouts don't seem to pick up any language skills while stationed in a country, which seems like an oversight) or how knowledge is lost/ retained if scouts are assigned to other countries. I'll continue to track my scouts over time in my save and will report back if I find out more things and if there's an interest here to learn more.
