What negative aspect of Football Manager affects your enjoyment the most?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:13 AM PDT

I think for me it's how piss poor non-pressing, defensive tactics are. It feels like every single tactic that's decent starts with at least slightly urgent pressing, High line of engagement, high defensive line and counter pressing.

It makes tactics so boring when you can play a high defensive line with an aging Gary Cahill and Scott Dann and get Crystal Palace to the top half of the table in your first season. It completely kills the immersion when Mourinho loses most of his games and can barely avoid relegation because his tactical style just doesn't translate to the match engine.

How my save almost got destroyed.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:47 PM PDT

I am furious and want to complain.

Managing Anderlecht in 2028. Doing great.

Won 7 league titles on the trot and 2 CL wins in the last 3 years. We have about 300 million in the bank as I'm a wheeler dealer.

Just finished a perfect season in the league only blemish is a knockout round exit from CL on a bullshit 1-0 loss to OL (was almost tempted to save scum but I refrained).

Promising winger comes back from loan comes to me asking for transfer as he thinks he will not get playing time (he's not wrong I have like 3 better left wingers at the club). Offer him another loan he says no he wants out. I agree and transfer list him by request. He is worth 7.5 mil I get about 8 offers instantly at around 5.5 mil. Negotiate a sell on clause on all of them and accept.

Board blocks the transfers because they tell me I should get 21 millions at least for him (LIKE WTF ARE YOU SMOKING). I appeal with every dialog option Board says no dice. I put him on unwanted list and DoF keeps rejecting every offer as it does not meet valuation.

4 senior players come to me to complain that I am blocking the sale. There is no option in there to say the Board is blocking it and I look like the asshole. The entire squad is furious as I am already denying a couple of moves for other players and it looks like there will be a mutiny in my squad.

I actually resigned as I was already losing patience with the board over their stupidity. Every transfer I make the moan about, I never get a good fee apparently, every player I let go was a super promising youngster they are super sad about (bro he was a 2 star potential player with single digit attributes in most important areas for his role but whatever). Every player I bring in they complain I paid too much. Jesus I have over 50 mil positive net profit on transfers every fucking season over the past 7 years fuck off and let me do my job you idiots.

I eventually just released him on a free which somehow nobody batted an eye at and he instantly signed for Napoli for like 54k a week.

So now I just accepted the Sweden job and will look forward to Philippe Cocu taking over and completely destroying the team.

Edit: I feel better this morning lol. Ty for letting me vent. Just applied to the Roma job we will see how that goes. Cocu took over Anderlecht and promptly put like half the squad on the transfer list. Hopefully I get a club job soon so I can get a couple of them.

Oh and a nice touch was that most of my staff instantly resigned with me. Messi, Sergio Ramos and Chiellini were my hires and had really good stats. Ironically Messi turned into a defensive coach and Ramos is attacking / technical. One cool aspect of the new coaching badges is seeing their stats improve as they complete the courses. They had great mental stats initially but so / so coaching stats at the beginning but they steadily went up and all three are 4/5 star coaches now.

Your Youth Intake: A Comprehensive Guide From a Superuser

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Hello, I've seen a lot of debate about youth intake and a lot of myths being perpetuated across several forums, so I thought I might clear up the air with this massive guide detailing everything that works and does not work in the game.

    CREDENTIALS

I'm dealing with FM2021, other games may differ slightly. I've played this game for 900 hours and run experiments on my channel. I make heavy use of the editor to check PA of players and have noticed trends along the way.

This guide is special because it's from a player's POV, and will be most relevant to you, rather that whatever the developers think they have programmed into the game.

    QUICK FACTS

PA = Potential ability. Newgens with high PA are termed wonderkids and will become great players in the future barring injury and poor nature. Every time I'm talking about good players, I am referring to high PA players, not the variable stars. How high is high? Anywhere above 180. Big clubs usually have 170+ PA players once the newgens take over. Messi always has 200, Mbappe etc will vary between 175ish to 190+.

"Fair" Saves = Something I've come up with using Sangue Blu's mods. I'll dive into them later, but just know that when I use this term, it means every country in the world are on level ground and have the same chance to produce good regens.

THINGS THAT HELPS PRODUCE BETTER NEWGENS

    Facilities and Junior Coaching

No-brainer. Upgrading your youth facilities and coaching invites better players. By no means do they automatically bring Messi Jrs, but they are a very good start.

    Youth Rating

This is beyond your control in regular gameplay. It's a number out of 200 that decides whether a country can produce good regen or not. A country like Singapore will have a low YR, so they won't be able to make any Ronaldo's bar a miracle. A country like England or Spain have much higher YR, so they'll produce much better regens. You can modify this in the in-game editor, and as part of my "fair" saves, I have used Sangue Blu's mod to change all countries in the world to have the same YR.

    Football Importance & Regional Strength

Similar to YR, this pair of factors will determine whether a country can produce regens, but specifically deal with how the domestic clubs operate. The clubs will play a bit "smarter" with their investments and therefore be able to produce better regens. If the clubs/leagues are not loaded, this is reflected in just slightly better regens produced or random loans/transfer deals. This is done through the pre-game editor as a database change, or you can use Sangue Blu's mods to automatically fix it for you (which is what I've done for every "fair" save): here, and here.

    Save Scumming

You can save in the state right before you'll get your intake (i.e. when you press "continue" your inbox will immediately show intake) and you can basically scum yourself better newgens. There is a catch though. While every newgen have variable PA, they also have a "range". From my observations, the range seems to only be around 20. If all your newgens start at around 150 PA, then savescumming won't get you a 190 PA wonderkid. At best a 170. I've tried this technique for a few intakes and it was extremely tiring and unrewarding. You can't bust your way into a good intake every year.

Addendum: Your youth intake "range" is decided around December when you get the preview. This wasn't something I had tested for, but some people report that they can savescum at this time to mix up the PA "range" of their newgens. How effective this is I do not know.

THINGS THAT DO NOT HELP PRODUCE BETTER NEWGENS

    HOYD

Fucking HOYDs. I've had 20 20 20 HOYDs, high reputation HOYDs like Kluivert, HOYDs from Barcelona/Juventus/Bayern, HOYDs from my country, it just doesn't matter. They are practically useless. In my "fair" experiments, I've observed clubs like Sheriff Tiraspol produce 180+ PA newgens with a 10 10 10 HOYD. Doesn't hurt to get a good one, but they are almost entirely useless.

    Club Rep

They don't even help in retaining your players, what makes you think they'll help you get better players?

    Affiliates

They just make your intake exciting. They don't add anything to your intake as far as I have observed. Also, refer to YR. You won't get any good Cambodian regens easily because their YR sucks.

    WEIRD TRENDS I HAVE NOTICED

    Countries

This is the most infuriating pattern I have noticed. The game trips itself into only producing good newgens for certain countries in each year, from time to time. On "fair" saves, I have had Belarus and Honduras win the WC multiple times because the game suddenly vomits several 175+ PA newgens from those countries. At one point, I had a team almost entirely full of Belarusian worldbeaters because they are just so insanely good. Another time, I noticed all the Spanish lower-league teams had at least one 170+ PA newgen after I enabled LaLiga. And another time, Indonesia makes consecutive WC qualifications. It's bizarre. In long term saves this kind of balances out as more and more newgens pile on and cancel each other out, but yeah.

It's not even just modded "fair" saves. In a normal experiment I ran, Germany was ruling the world. Roll the roulette!

    First Year is the Best

Another godforsaken pattern. The first year, you'll get the best regens. Lots of 180s, 190 PA players. After that, it goes downhill steadily. It doesn't mean you won't get good players afterwards, it's just a lot harder. By the 5th year or so, I usually only see 185 max PA newgens with the odd outlier. IDK why the game does this, and it never goes back to the first year worldbeater ejaculation.

    CONCLUSION

Many people will feed you bullshit about all the things you can do to improve your intake. They are lying. It's 90% luck, and 10% the things in this list I suggested you can fix in a regular playthrough. I feel like they could really fix the system, especially make it so YR can change depending on how good a league or club has become, but we know that's not happening.

Anyway, hope this stupid long post is vaguely interesting/helpful. You may ask me any questions below! Thanks for sticking around.

EDIT: Because u/theslothening and possibly some other people are accusing me of lying, I was running a sim with a "fair" world and here's the list of best regens by PA in 2024. Notably, the best regens on the list are English and they seem to have spawned at the same time (4 16 y-o's and 1 17). Additionally, most of them are older, signifying they were generated in the earlier years of the save.
