£5M from Peñarol. 128 league apps 129 league goals. Loves me, doesn't want to leave despite numerous £48M (LOL!) from Europe's Elite.

Interesting attention to detail in FM. Ticket sales almost halved after I beat ManU 7-0 in the first leg.

[Update] Creating a champions league winning side from small nation players

Creating a champions league winning side from small nation players - 10 years in

I am currently trying to take a regular side from Bulgaria to champions league glory. However, I am doing this without using any players born in FIFA's top 50 countries (by in game ranking). [Please see my previous post for a breakdown of exactly what rules I have imposed on myself and how the first 4 seasons went as well as the next 3 seasons

In this post, rather than break down every season and every transfer window, I will give a very brief overview of how the team has performed, a look at my current roster, and take a more in depth look at some of my most interesting prospects from minnow nations.

    Update on Septemvri Sofia:

We win the league every year and I have an automatic spot in the Champions League group stage so I can ensure that large income every year which is crucial. I have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions league each year, finishing second in my group twice and first once. I have advanced in the knockout stages to the round of 8 twice, but never further. Making the final leap into real contenders is still a step above my current batch of players.

Moving forward I am facing a major challenge which is that quite a few of my best players no longer fit the criteria I set out with when I started this challenge. Either their national team has progressed greatly up the national team rankings (See my AMC from South Africa below), or they have switched nationalities from their birth countries to a major country (see my RW from the Philippines or GK from Qatar below). I plan to sell all of these players as the years progress, and have already done so for quite a few. This includes my best player who was a Striker that switched from Benin to France. However I am keeping them in the squad for now to help mentor younger talents and keep my competitive level up until my smaller country prospects are ready to contend for the Champions League title.

Here is a look at my current squad makeup by country (in alphabetical order)

    • Andorra: CM
    • Antigua and Barbuda: CB
    • Bolivia: CB
    • Bulgaria: RB
    • Cambodia: LB
    • Chile: CM
    • Ecuador: AMC LW
    • Egypt: CM
    • French Guiana: LB
    • Gibraltar: RB
    • Kazakhstan: CM
    • Lithuania: CB ST
    • Luxembourg: CB
    • Northern Ireland: RW
    • Philippines: RW
    • Qatar: GK1 GK2
    • Romania: RB LW
    • Slovakia: CM
    • Slovenia: LW
    • South Africa: AMC

    Young Prospects:

Now let's take a look at some of my most interesting prospects from small nations. I do not expect most of these to become champions league quality players, but many will become good enough to play in the Bulgarian league, and so I am happy to buy and develop them. I have not listed all of my prospects, as I have way too many to post here. My strategy is to scoop up newly generated players each year from small countries that have even a small chance of potential. Plenty of the players I buy end up not developing at all, which is fine, but it leads to me having very bloated youth / reserve teams. I also keep an eye on world rankings and when a country falls to 50 or below I try and grab a few youngsters. This means I now have players from countries like Wales and Austria. I expect these countries to jump back up the rankings, and if they do I will just sell the young prospects to bolster my transfer budget.

Overall I am very happy with progress the team has made and the prospects I have been able to find. I expect it will take me between 7-10 more seasons to complete this challenge, but a couple of highly rated prospects really developing could move this forward. As I move forward seasons are starting to take longer as I have to manage the development of more and more players. Just handling loans every summer takes hours (62 loans this season). Hopefully you are still enjoying the updates even as they take a while to make, as I am enjoying this challenge quite a bit and am excited to see it through.
