    Youth-Only in Luxembourg (2025 Update)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:23 PM PDT

So a week ago I posted about the terrible first intake of my youth-only save in Luxembourg. Disappointing to say the least. But due to a few factors, (bad weather, stuck at home with a cold, a fair bit of instant resulting, etc.) I was able to make it to the year 2025 in my save and I thought I'd quickly share my progress.

Why a youth-only save in Luxembourg? One might ask. Maybe I'm just a masochist but after I found success way too quickly in my first FM21 save (won the league and CL with Arsenal in my second season) I wanted a long-term project. One that would test my sanity. When I saw that Luxembourg beat Ireland during the international break I knew that my next save would take me there.

    Meet FC Jeunesse Canach

The francophones on this subreddit might already be able to guess why I chose them, but for all those uncultured swine out there, jeunesse means "youth" in French. They also are situated in a town of just 1,500 people. A perfect choice for my save. FC Jeunesse Canach had been a yo-yo club between the top division and second division for much of the 2000s, but in 2017 they were relegated and had 3 straight uninspiring mid-table finishes in a row. Time to jump in.

    2020-2021 Season:

Promotion D'Honneur: Not much to say here. We were projected by the media to finish 1st and we had multiple players that my assistant graded as leading/good 1st division players. We won the league led by 22 goals from former New England Revolution striker Saer Sene who somehow is playing in the Luxembourgish 2nd division.

Luxembourg Cup: We somehow make a run to the final, even pumping 2nd division title holders Swift Hesperange 5-1 in the semis. We lose 2-1 in the finals to a top division club but the scoreline flatters us. We simply got outplayed. But even just a run to the finals got us crucial

Youth Intake: If I speak I am in big trouble.

    2021-2022 Season:

BGL Ligue: A dream 2nd place finish the season after promotion. 10 draws helped us a lot as we beat out Una Strassen on the last matchday to pip them to European places by one point. They poached our only right winger on a free during the summer before so that felt nice. It also means that Jeunesse Canach will be playing their first ever European football. The first qualifying round of the newly created Conference League counts right?

Luxembourg Cup: Got a terrible draw against the best team in the country in just the 2nd round. Went out in a competitive 1-nil loss. Can't complain too much.

Youth Intake: Only 1 player looks like he even has a good shot of contributing to the first team. Disappointing still, but at least much better than our first season's intake.

    2022-2023 Season:

BGL Ligue: Another quality top half finish sees us finish in the European spots again. We don't have many rotation options so like the last season, we started out well but finished meekly. League title holders Progres finished 9 points behind first, but they also turned professional at the end of the season (The first team in Luxembourg to do so). It will be interesting to see how that has an effect on the league the next few years.

Luxembourg Cup: Another good cup run only to fall just short. We lose to Jeunesse Esch, probably the 2nd best team in the country, but manage to gain some good funds to hopefully finance some facilities upgrades.

Conference League Review: Summary: Hungarian farmers squeak past Luxembourgish farmers in the 1st Qualifying round. It would have been nice to advance to the next round and get another influx of cash but it was our first taste of European football so my expectations were low. We were more competitive that I thought we'd be though.

Youth Intake: Two decent prospects, but unfortunately at positions where we have a fair bit of depth. We still have not been able to upgrade our facilities because the board keeps shooting us down, but a new HOYD seems to have our intakes looking better.

    2023-2024 Season:

BGL Ligue: Unlucky. We finish 4th again, and we even finish with 2 more points than last year. But we finish the season without securing European football for next year because with the current league rules, 4th place only gets a Conference League Spot if a top 3 team wins the Luxembourg Cup. Unfortunately for us, 7th place Mondorf upset Progres in the final and steal away our Europe spot. For a club with as limited of a budget as ours, losing out on even just the 1st qualifying round of the Conference League is a sizable hit.

Luxembourg Cup: Not much else to say. A flat and tepid loss to a team we are better than, and unfortunately for us they went and won the whole thing, robbing us of a European spot.

Conference League Review: Our first victory in Europe. It might have been a win on penalties vs a side from Gibraltar in the 1st Qualifying Round of the Conference League but we've done it! We go out 5-1 on aggregate to a Croatian club in the next round but I'm buzzing just saying that we've won a European tie.

Youth Intake: Bleh. My HOYD from last season wanted more money than the board would allow me to pay him so I had to let him go. Found a replacement with similar stats but got this terrible intake. Terrible PAs, terrible personalities as well. I was able to upgrade my junior coaching before this season so I was hoping for a better intake. Disappointing.

    2024-2025 Season:

BGL Ligue: Shit injury luck and some free transfers out see us finish in 8th. Pretty disappointing fall back down to earth but it was coming for a few seasons. By finishing top 4 we were definitely overachieving. Up until this season none of my youth players were good enough to make an impact in the first team. I rotated in more younger players and paid the price in points. The mid-table finish stings a lot less because...

Luxembourg Cup: We win our first real piece of silverware which also qualifies us for the Conference League next season. The final against perennial top 3 club Dudelange was a masterclass in shithousery. We had about 32% possession, scored on a corner in the 66th minute then time wasted and held on for dear life.

Youth Intake: Finally! Our European forays the last 2 seasons allowed us to upgrade our youth facilities for the first time and our junior coaching as well. Add in a brand new HOYD with a fairly professional personality and it led to by far my best intake yet. Two 5-star PA players and some players that can slot in as rotation options for next season. The league finish was a step back but this was a really encouraging sign that real progress is being made.

    The Squad in 2025:

    Key Senior Players:

I wish there were some youth intake products in this section but there simply isn't. The first 4 years were way too shit. Here's a look at my top 4 players.

Lissander Da Costa: Everything you'd want from a striker at this level. AKA, fast with good finishing. A real life product of the Jeunesse Canach youth academy, he has over 100 appearances and 60 goals for the club at just 23. My assistant rates him as a leading BGL Ligue player so he will likely be around for a while.

Junior Varela: Ridiculously poor technicals but decent ratings in most of the attributes that matter. Has held down the starting CB position since my second season and doesn't look like giving it up soon.

Adrian Ahmetxhexaj: Not very technically sound, but he's very quick for a midfielder at this level and had good mental stats. Still quite young as well. Hopeful that he continues to improve.

Tun Rauen: Everything you want from a fullback. Runs up and down the left flank all day long, great locker room presence, and his natural fitness of 15 means he basically never misses a game. He recently turned 30 so his stellar physicals for this level are just starting to take a tiny tick down. I need at least 2 more decent seasons from him though because I have absolutely zero decent backup left-backs at the club right now.

    Youth Prospects:

The players from the first 4 years were pretty much worthless so I'm only gonna post the top 3 from the most recent intake.

Maxime Schmit: The best player from our most recent intake can slot immediately into being our 3rd choice CB. My only gripe is the 5 heading. How can you be 6'6 and be so shit at heading? Hopefully it goes up with training because the rest of his stats look pretty decent.

Duarte Alexandre: He was rated as the 2nd best player of our most recent intake and I'm torn. His technicals are absolutely shit, but he's quite the pace merchant. Will be interesting to see if he can amount to anything.

Ben Dervisevic: It's kinda sad that this is what is considered a top prospect in Luxembourg but the physicals look ok and we desperately needed some depth at RW/RM.

    Progress Review (Charts):

Facilities & Reputations: Slow and steady improvement. It looks like upgrading youth facilities and junior coaching the summer before my last intake had a big effect. I'm excited to see how upgrading my youth recruitment affects things as well. It took me about 25 tries and a conversation where I threatened to leave the club but I finally got it upgraded. Disappointing to see the league and national team coefficients decline but it's not really something I can affect right now. I desperately want to turn professional because training is essentially useless for player development as a semi-pro side but I keep getting shot down. The only feasible way to get enough money to turn pro in the short term is to win the title and get into a CL Qualifying Round but with Progres recently turning professional their budget is almost double that of the 2nd place team. They will be tough to topple.

Manager Profile: Pretty crazy to see the improvement mapped out like this. Somehow my discipline went from 8 to 19 in a year and now it's maxed out at 20. The club is happy to continue to pay for my coaching badges so I will take full advantage of it.

Finances: From 1k to almost 500k in just 5 years while not being able to really sell players and also while upgrading facilities. Can't complain about that.

    Goals Moving Forward:

Short Term (1-2 years): Continue to challenge for European spots, give minutes to promising youth, upgrade training facilities

Medium Term (4-6 years): Turn professional and upgrade training facilities, Make Conference League Group Stages, win BGL Ligue title, continue to upgrade youth recruitment

Long Term (10-12 years): Make Europa League Group Stages, use money to fund new stadium

Apologies if this reads like a rant and thanks for letting me share!

We were first in the league with a 14 point advantage, they were in the last place but on a good form. The result? Inevitable. xG? Minimal.

    General manager suggesting targets

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 08:04 PM PDT

Finding loans is a pain in the butt personally. Loans obviously help teams with payroll budgets or that aren't big enough to interest top talent to compete at a high level, but the only two ways I've really found to find these loan opportunities is by either going to a big clubs roster filtering by loan list or going to suggest transfer targets under GM. And the GM usually gives 2-3 good options which I then scout. However in my recent save I've had back to back top tier 4 star GMS who have never once given me a suggestion. It seems wild they can't come up with one loan suggestion ever but they can come up with transfer suggestions
