(Update) Creating a champions league winning side from small nation players

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:59 AM PDT

Welcome back to the journey. I am currently 7 seasons into trying to take a regular side from Bulgaria to champions league glory. However, I am doing this without using any players born in FIFA's top 50 countries (by in game ranking). Please see my previous post for a breakdown of exactly what rules I have imposed on myself and how the first 4 seasons went.

In this post, rather than break down every season and every transfer window, I thought it might be more interesting to give a very brief overview of how the team has performed, and take a more in depth look at some of my most interesting prospects from minnow nations.

    Update on Septemvri Sofia

We win the league every year and have done well enough in the europa league / champions league to secure an automatic spot in the group stage moving forward. I have never finished higher than 3rd in the champions league group stage, and my best finish in the Europa league is the quarterfinals (x2). Based on the level of players I am able to find, I do not think it is too difficult to recruit a team of players from small nations that is very good for Bulgaria and can do alright in the Europa league; however, finding players that are the next step up in quality (whole team of 145+ CA plus a couple that are 165+) for me to compete in the champions league is going to be very very difficult. I am incredibly happy with my wonderkid from Kazakhstan, the development of my two Lithuanian prospects, and my Luxembourgian CB I purchased from Borussia Dortmund.

Here is a look at my current squad makeup by country (in alphabetical order)

    Benin: ST

    Bulgaria: CB and AMC

    Cambodia: LB/RB

    Czech Republic: LB and CB/RB

    Ecuador: CM and LW

    Hungary: CM

    Kazakhstan: CM

    Lithuania: CB and ST

    Luxembourg: CB

    Montserrat: CM/AMC

    Northern Ireland: RW/AMC

    Philippines: RW

    Qatar: GK and GK

    Romania: RB and LW

Slovakia: CM and CM and CB

    South Africa: AMC

If you take a careful look at those screenshots you will notice something that is a little bit "off" on a few of the players, as their nationality does not match what I have listed them as. Many players born in small nations switch nationalities as they get called up for more prestigious countries than their birth country. This has happened to me a total of 9 times. My current rule is that as long as they were born in a country that is outside the top 50 and I purchase them when that is still their listed nationality, I will continue to use/develop them. If possible in the future I will work to sell any players that do this; however, for now I am content to play them. My examples of this so far are 3 players switching to England (Fiji, Montserrat, Philippines), 4 players switching to France (Cambodia, Gabon, Benin, Seychelles), 1 player switching to Germany (Kosovo), and 1 player switching to Spain (Qatar).

    Other young players

Now let's take a look at some of my most interesting prospects from small nations. I do not expect most of these to become champions league quality players, but many will become good enough to play in the Bulgarian league, and so I am happy to buy and develop them. Besides the players listed below, I have young prospects from Thailand, Malawi, Tanzania, Barbados, Costa Rica, Guinea-Bissau, and Armenia. There are also a few world class players from small nations that I was not able to buy when they generated due to the stature of my club at the time and how much they cost. Hopefully this won't be too much of an issue going forward, but is sad to see a world class RB from Andorra playing for Madrid and a CB from Sri Lanka playing for Real Sociedad knowing I will never get them (despite my constantly offering their buyouts from the time they were 16).

    Andorra - GK

    Andorra - AMC

    Bolivia - CB

    Gibraltar - RB

    Latvia - CB

    Luxembourg - AMC

    Madagascar - LB

    San Marino - AMC

Hope you enjoyed taking a look at this update. I will do another after a few more years have passed in-game.
