[OC] Best transfer targets in Football Manager 2021

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 01:00 AM PST

Spreadshits™ are back for Football Manager 2021! Post from last year can be found here.

Looking to show some oomph in the transfer market but your club isn't exactly rolling the dough? After you spent all of the money signing young "affordable" wonderkids like Yusuf Demir, Joao Pedro, and Denys Popov, you still have a gaping hole at left-back? Or do you just want to sign a cheap back-up option for your right-winger in case you get ravaged by injuries in the shortened season? Fret not, for Spreadshits can help you.

The short version is that I've taken ~170K players, rated their attributes to assess how well would they play a given role, and given them a score for the position. I've also found expected scores your players should have based on the league and season targets, which should help you find the appropriate targets.

So, without further ado, the lists:

I've rated each player based on the attributes required for a given role and calculated a standard score (also known as z-score), thereby creating a metric that allows you to compare a player to all other players that can play on that same position within the same role. This made it straightforward to find the best transfer targets at the start of the game for various categories of players, as a higher z-score is better ao it was just a matter of sorting a given set of players. The players were divided into "tiers", based on their age and their in-game valuation. Each spreadshit has the top 10 players for each role in each of the following "tiers":

    • All - the very best players
    • Free - players for all budgets, since they don't cost anything
    • Free and U29 - a player that not only does not cost anything but will also give you a few seasons as they are on the good side of 30
    • <100K - very cheap players
    • <100K and U29 - very cheap players younger than 30
    • <1M - players that cost less than a 1M GBP
    • <1M and U29 - players that cost less than a 1M GBP and are also younger than 30
    • <10M - players that cost less than 10M GBP
    • <10M and U29 - players that cost less than 10M GBP and are also younger than 30
    • <30M - players that cost less than 30M GBP
    • <30M and U29 - players that cost less than 30M GBP and are also younger than 30
    • U29 - players that are younger than 30
    • U23 - players that are younger than 24, very talented younger players
    • U21 - players that are younger than 21, so-called "wonderkids"
    • U18 - players that are younger than 18, potential future "wonderkids"

Currently, the ratings are not including the hidden attributes.

    How to use the Spreadshits

There are 14 documents, one per position. Each document has 16 different worksheets. The first worksheet in every document is a list of leagues, and a recommended minimum standard score when looking for a transfer target for a given level (best in the league, title challenge, mid-table, substitute, or backup). The remainder of the sheets shows different tiers of players.

My recommendation for finding the right players is:

    1. Decide what position you want to strengthen.
    2. Optionally, decide what role you want the player to play.
    3. Find the appropriate player level that you need for success in your league using the first worksheet.
    4. Go through the tiers and find what players satisfy your search criteria based on the budget.

    Pro-tip:

You can add a filter and then use it to sort or filter for the role you care about.

FM21 is, in my opinion, the best version of the game by some distance. So, why is the user interface so astonishingly poor?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 06:15 PM PST

This mainly references the absolute monstrosities that are press conferences and team talks, but there are several nickpicks other than those two features.

Press Conferences - At least, AT LEAST one third of the screen is left completely unoccupied, vacant, bare, and naked, begging for some attention, whilst journalists questions are unnecessarily crammed into a tiny section at the bottom of the screen?!? This is even worse, amazingly, in the player interaction section. Why am I having to SCROLL FOR MORE RESPONSES WHEN THERE IS 50% OF THE SCREEN EMPTY?????

Team talks - It has been referenced heavily on SI forums and a few times on this sub, but could they have found a more unintuitive and overwhelming means of relaying team talk information? I can somewhat understand that they aimed for a 'realistic' approach by having players laid out as if they are in a dressing room, but it just makes my head hurt.

    More grievances include:

    • In match previews (and season previews), players names being shortened to their first three letters and then '...' despite the fact that there is barren space within the rest of the pitch!

    • 'The Dugout' feature, which is moderately handy, but takes up a huge portion of the match screen with no means of minimising/making it smaller

    • Under 23s & 18s 'team preview' emails deciding to go completely against the grain of every other team layout, and zooming so far into the XI that you have to scroll to see the rest of the midfield and defence?? Where is the consistency???

I can only assume others are suffering from the same issues as I, and feel free to comment below with other irks

    FM Analytics Website

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 07:45 PM PST

Hey everyone! I've been playing FM for about 5 years now, and I personally love the massive amount of data that the game provides, but I've always struggled to collect and analyse the data - especially year-on-year squad data. I like tracking how my players have done over the seasons - who's been my best overall player, how their value has changed over time etc.

Currently I do this by getting the csvs from the squad view and doing the analysis on Excel. However, I'm thinking of building an analytics website (i'm a student hoping to get into the software industry) where you guys can use a specific squad view template and then upload the csv from that view, and the website will do the analysis for you and you can track season on season differences in players.

Would this be interesting to any of you guys? Also, are there any other forms of analysis you'd be interested in getting?

My biggest achievement on FM in a long time. Won the Copa Del Rey with Deportivo (now 3rd tier) in the first season. To get to the final I beat Murcia, Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Bilbao, Villareal and then Valencia over 2 legs.
