Rise and Fall of Swansea Uni - Forever Amateur (Part #3)

Chapter 5: Flying too close to the sun

Success of Swansea Uni was getting noticed by the agents of the English Football League, and they were about to feast on the free players available. Star defender Mark McGuiness was the first one gone to QPR, Arsenal regen Brett Haley goes to Coventry, team's best player Jonathan Leko and Troy Chiabi leaves for Leeds and QPR as total of 24 players leave the club to England. With 13 players retiring at the end of last season, we were down total of 37 players and we had to fill in the gaps quick as the ECL registration starts at the start of July. Unfortunately there was no one good enough that were willing to join an amateur team so early, and we were eliminated by the Kazakh team Todol Kostanay.

    https://preview.redd.it/8h7j51rlhw161.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5e24ee24c20ec1b81e65c5075179cb08838e47f

With so many players gone, we signed 53 players on free. With veteran players like Sadio Mane, Son Heung-Min, and Takumi Minamino, and many old but experienced players making up the core part of the squad. We were able to temporary stop the hole in our squad. With our loyal players such as Vilijami Sinisalo and Oscar Bobb and great finishing by Olly Andrew we stomped the league with 104 goal difference.

    the last hurrah?

Things were looking bad at the start, but we managed to turn it around by filling the gaps with veteran players. But this was a crucial mistake.

Chapter 6: Fall of Swansea Uni

2028/29 season starts with 9 players retiring in crucial positions. TNS takes three key defenders signaling the dismantling of Swansea Uni. Sub keeper a regen from Dartford leaves for Everton leaving only captain Sinisalo as the only goalkeeper in the team. Oscar Bobb leaves for Southampton and Justin Jackson our only defender with higher than 2 stars leaves for Fleetwood leaving defense absolutely decimated. With the team dismantling and only Sinisalo remaining from the best eleven of the last season, we defeated HJK, Slovan Bratislava, Valerenga, to meet Slavia Prague in the Champions League playoff. When we were met with a devastating news.

The captain, the only goalkeeper, the all-time top league apps Viljami Sinisalo leaves leaving the team without a goalkeeper. And without him, Swansea Uni was powerless losing 5-9 on aggregate to drop to Europa group stage.

Swansea Uni were now left with 14 players in the first team, and we were forced to sign any available players left out of contract in the lower divisions of Welsh football. With days away from the Europa registration, we managed to sign 2 players before the deadline.

With a difficult group on hand and with absolutely decimated team barely filling the minimum squad size with youth players, Swansea Uni is now struggling in the league as well. And now Swansea Uni is about to face the most difficult times in their history.

Rise and Fall of Swansea Uni - Forever Amateur (Part #1)

Chapter 1: Rise of Swansea Uni
I had an idea to take over a team in the Welsh league in order to bring glory Welsh football. The team I chose: Swansea University.

    https://preview.redd.it/1vbll06r2w161.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52a9edfbbf2a2f67bdfb2911e677c0b6fb423cc6

Unfortunately I didn't know one big caveat this club had: Permanently Amateur.

    Being an amateur club means

    • Cannot buy/sell any players
    • Cannot loan any players for wage/fee
    • Cannot give contracts, so anyone can leave on free.
    • Cannot afford to scout players

So throughout 10 season that I played through, I could only sign players on free transfers or expired contracts. That doesn't mean we can't get some amazing talents in our team.

    https://preview.redd.it/5kt0aj1b6w161.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbc23cd1f3bd671fbedcf52e1f1151795eb1bd6a

After getting promotion to the Cymru Premier with Marley Bishop-Wisdom scoring 45 goals out of 37 matches, I signed many young and old talents from English free transfer market where I went through hundreds and hundreds of players and offered them contracts to see if they were "Emergency Backup" or "Star Player." After grabbing some defensive reinforcements and Matty Argent-Barnes (36 goals in 36 matches), I finished 5th and won the playoff to grab myself a place in the European Conference League.

    Chapter 2: Breakthrough

After certain amount of time, players without contract are willing to join lower league teams and while this was a very realistic feature, it was also very exploitable.

After signing 37 year old Charlie Adam, I realized there is so much potential to this team than I originally thought.

He was pleased with Swansea Uni's direct style of football.

Getting stomped out of ECL Qualifying Rounds, but slowly rising through the league table. Swansea Uni finished 3rd in the 22/23 season and 2nd in the 23/24 season. Every time player does well, they would immediately transfer out to an English league team for a professional contract, but we managed to fill the gaps with almost 50 free transfer signings a year. 24/25 season comes around and we sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Patryk Kilmala, and with talents such as Rhys Williams (Liverpool) and James Olayinka (Arsenal). After tense battle to the title:

We finally win the league. In fact, we do the treble.

And finally after 5 difficult seasons, Swansea University is ready to challenge Europe.

Rise and Fall of Swansea Uni - Forever Amateur (Part #2)

Chapter 3: Golden Age of Swansea Uni

After getting knocked out of Champions League Qualifying Rounds by Dinamo Zagreb, Swansea Uni drops down to Europa League Qualifying Rounds to lose to Khimki to make it into the group stages of ECL with Everton, Molde, and BATE, a very difficult group for an ECL.

    A miracle

We manage to grab both games off Everton somehow to grab second place and then proceeding to beat FK Partisan but losing to Lokomotiv Moscow in the second knockout round. However back in the league, Swansea Uni was absolutely stomping the competition.

    32 wins 0 draws 0 loss

2025/26 was an invincible season for Swansea University with incredible signings up front such as Marko Arnautovic, Teemu Pukki, Erik Lamela, Younes Belhanda, Ryan Edmondson (58 goals! in 34 matches) and finally

Ladies and gentleman, we got him.

2026/27 season was slightly less dominant with our star attacking lineup leaving the team or retiring (all star signings like Aguero will retire at the end of the season). But Jan Mlakar alone scoring 72 goals in 49 games won us the league title.

This time we made it to the UEFA Europa League to start the group with a 0-6 loss to Napoli and lost to Vitesse agg. 4-5 to get knocked out of ECL.

    :(

Chapter 4: The New Saints Strike Back

For those who never played in the Welsh Premier, TNS is the absolute dominant force in the league. Think PSG in Ligue 1 but even more dominant. I thought TNS had been done for after managing to out do them in the league, but Swansea Uni was about to pay the price.

At some point in the series, TNS realized they had a strong advantage over Swansea Uni: they could pay people wages and Swansea Uni couldn't. Who could stop them if they took all the star players at Swansea Uni? And that is exactly what they did. 7 young and promising star players had left the amateur club to sign a deal at TNS and they were ready to strike back.

Meanwhile at Swansea Uni, Jan Mlakar pulled off an incredible season of 82 goals in one season and Troy Chiabi scored 50 goals in the league to win the European Golden Shoe.

Chiabi wins the European Golden Shoe?

For the first time in history, Swansea University makes it into the Champions League group stage as well beating Red Star and Kobenhaven. And in the group stage they were greeted with this monstrosity.

    Fati, Mbappe, and Rodrygo yikes.

PSG pays Mbappe 650k per week, and we don't pay anyone anything. I certainly didn't get paid enough to witness this destruction.

    oof.

Getting knocked out of the group stages, we lose to Galatasaray in an absolutely painful match to get knocked off Europa as well.

    shouldn't have pressed \"get stuck in\"

Losing two matches to TNS prove fatal as TNS grabs back the title as well as the Welsh Cup from our grasp as star signings such as Raphael Guerreiro and Paul Pogba failed to make a huge difference.

    https://preview.redd.it/tlbwimh6ew161.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5fbce402e41203495a3144b6cb0303c7aea36a6

And it was about to get a lot harder for Swansea Uni.
