Trotter's Free Transfer Co. | Can you succeed in FM on free transfers alone? - Part 3

    Part 1 | Part 2

In which Derek "Del Boy" Trotter tries to make it to the big time without spending a penny.

    [Profit so far: £18,000]

    [Staff members named Rodney: 1]

    [Staff members named Albert: 0]

Ryan Case is a special player. A no-nonsense right-sided full-back, he's never played outside of non-league. What makes him so special is that at the age of 26, he is the oldest player in Dulwich Hamlet's squad by six years. He's also the only one left from the team that won promotion through the play-offs in 18/19.

    20/21 - Season Results

I make some tweaks to the formation to emphasise both Dennis and Flynn - our attacking outlets - providing support to Hamilton.

Hamlet put on some scrappy, dogged performances and by the time October rolls around we're in 4th, doing far better than I would have predicted during the Summer panic buy. But it seems the long season begins to take its toll on the young squad and by the time we hit the middle of November Hamlet have dropped enough points to slide down to 12th.

Brexit happens, but blissfully I get the "good" Brexit and work permit rules remain pretty much the same.

The Hamlet struggle on, and Del Boy introduces two new signings in January - former Crystal Palace reservist Luke Dreher and lower league journeyman Robbie Willmott. Dreher hits the ground sprinting, and notches up a rating of 7.37 in 5 games.

    The signings come rolling in

In March Dulwich are climbing the table again to 10th, four points from the top seven. Then news breaks that sends shockwaves through South London.

    Derek Edward Trotter is leaving.

During the January window struggling Championship side Barnsley sacked manager Daniel Stendel and looked three leagues below for their replacement. [OP's note: this completely blew me out of the water as well].

Barnsley are in massive debt and are hemorrhaging their small budget through a few highly-paid players. Trotter's handling of wages and finance caught their eye.

Just like that Del Boy is catapulted from a part-time London team and into the second-highest division in English football.

He leaves Dulwich with a trophy, a promotion and (hopefully) National League stability. Plus a record of:

    • 81 wins, 34 draws, and 36 losses
    • A win percentage of 53%.
    • Players in: 23, £0
    • Players out: 7, £18,000
    • 1 bloke called Rodney as Head of Youth

He's listed a favoured personnel by his old club just after he leaves too, aww.

I'm honestly as shocked as you are

20/21 - Off to South Yorkshire

Barnsley chairman Paul Conway welcomes Derek into his office, which probably overlooks the Peak District. He wants the new man to play possession football, sign young players, and develop kids in the youth system.

Barnsley sit 24th of the Championship. The club is rock bottom and six points from safety with 10 games remaining in the season. Luckily, Conway isn't expecting any heroics, if the Tykes go down this year he'll not hold it against our man Del Boy.

The wage bill is as bad as I feared. Even allocating all funds to wages, Barnsley are £24.5k over budget every week.

First things first, Del Boy rings up the Barnsley Chronicle and puts out an advert. Within days Rodney Gage, Rod East, and Roddy MacPhee (that one's a stretch) join Barnsley as sports scientist, physio, and coach.

Then come the Daves. Dave Morgan as U18 fitness coach, Dave Leich as U18 coach, Dave Galley as physio, and Dave Allen as a scout.

A handful of age 30+ players are earning more than 10k a week and need to be shipped. Ryan Bennett, Danny Mayor, Chey Dunkley, Kieffer Moore, Kenneth Dougall, and Albion Vrenezi are all on the chopping block.

Del Boy mixes up his low-tempo tactic to exploit the pace the Barnsley squad have on the wings. At this point, we're aiming to get at least a handful of wins to give the fans something to cheer for.

First game is against top of the table West Ham, who've only lost 7 of 37 so far. They have Balotelli and Arnautovic up front in a 4-4-2 which is some top-level shithousery.

Trotter's new team hold the league leaders to a 1-1 draw with a 94th minute set piece goal. Here we go, the great escape is on!

The team that keeps Barnsley up?

This time next season we'll… Still be in the Championship?
