Football Manager needs an 'ironman' save feature

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:00 AM PDT

I.e. disallowing you from saving the game manually as it automatically saves the game for you every time you exit. It's mad how achievements on Steam can be gained through just saving and reloading ('save-scumming').

There should be a visual marker on the interface that a save is an Ironman save too, so when people share pics of them winning Champions League as Whitehawk or whoever it's impressive and casts all doubt aside over whether they saved-and-reloaded to achieve it.

Of course it'll be an option so if you want to play a game where you can save and reload then you can. But it'll be more impressive winning Champions League as some IRL small team when it's done on an ironman save. Plus the achievements will actually be valid.

This is just a suggestion coming from somebody who plays strategy games with this feature. It makes the games challenging when you remove the ability to save and reload. Plus it removes any doubt in others when you want to show off what you've accomplished.

Trotter's Free Transfer Co. | Can you succeed in FM on free transfers alone? - Part 4

In which Derek "Del Boy" Trotter tries to make it to the big time without spending a penny.

March and April 2021 turn into a whirlwind pair of months. Barnsley win six of their first nine games, losing just one game. The team is catapulted from 24th to 19th with two games to go. Not only have they been winning, but winning well. 6-0 against Sheffield Wednesday, 4-0 against Fulham, 4-3 against West Brom.

Del Boy needs just a single win against already-safe Portsmouth to secure the Great Escape that no-one predicted and give me the chance to attempt a full Championship season without spending any money.

The two sides play out a drab 1-1 draw but results elsewhere go our way. Barnsley are staying up! The team has spent all but two weeks outside of the relegation zone all season, but they've clung to safety. The season is rounded off by a dull 0-0 draw with Rotherham.

Once all the imitation champagne has been wiped from the floor of the changing room, the task ahead starts to sink in. Barnsley is a team in massive wage debt. A huge clearout is on the cards, and plenty of the players who secured safety are going to be out on their arses. They'll each get a commemorative porcelain nodding dog for the trouble, though.

    Barnsley's change in fortunes

    Player Transfers - 21/22

The Exodus begins. Striker Cauley Woodrow is out the door for £3.5 million to Reading before the old season is even out. Luke Thomas, Marc Bola, and Elliot Moore are quick to follow for a combined £1.7m. Ex-Prem Ryan Bennett heads to Wigan for 300k. Wonderkid regen Iain Trenerry is sold to West Brom for £1.8m and a 50% sell-on clause.

[None of these get added to by £500m profit target unfortunately as they aren't my signings]

Recruiting for the Championship is very different. In the lower leagues you just ask literally everyone to trial at your club and see who turns up. Professionals have standards. The board back their new hero all the way. With their support and the player sales I have £160k per week in spare wages to fill.

Turns out not many free agents want to join a club that narrowly avoided relegation. The pick of the meagre bunch for 21/22 are:

    • Ro-Shaun Williams - 22 - DC - Released by Southampton
    • Lewis O'Brien - 22 - MC - Released by Huddersfield

Williams is a pacey centre-back with great fitness and 3.5 tackles won per 90. He had the fourth-fewest mistakes in League One on loan at Southend. He's predicted to be a PL player in the future.

O'Brien is a box-to-box CM who laid on 11 goals for Exeter on loan in League One, and scored five goals to boot. He achieved a 6.99 rating.

The first batch of new players arrives

    Season Results - 21/22

Barnsley are expected to struggle again. Checking the comparison report the only thing it has going for it is pace, acceleration, and crossing ability. I switch the formation again, sticking with Del Boy's 4-1-2-3, but widening the play to ensure that our pace is used on the flanks.

Results come in dribs and drabs. Stringing wins together eludes Barnsley throughout until an undefeated November spurs the team into a streak which sees them lose just three games in 12. By January the team is sitting in 10th and that looks to be where the Tykes will end up as results get patchy again.

A cup run distracts everyone for a time as Barnsley squeak into the 6th round of the FA cup before being demolished 4-0 by Manchester United.

A late playoff push in April is derailed by a string of four defeats in a row, and Del Boy's team finish the season in 7th, a whole 13 places above where the media predicted them. New assistant manager Ricardo Carvalho [yep, that one] and Del Boy have made quite a team.

    So close yet so far...

    Free Player Performance - 21/22

    • Ro-Shaun Williams - 44 APPS | 0 GLS | 0 A | 2 POM | 7.11 | Value £1.4m
    • Lewis O'Brien - 41 APPS | 1 GLS | 3 A | 2 POM | 6.87 | Value £325k

Of the new signings Ro-Shaun Williams stands out. He averages only 1.5 tackles a game, but his interceptions skyrocket. He makes 78 across the season - PL levels of ability. He averages a 7.11 rating. O'Brien manages a respectable 6.87 rating over 41 games.

A fantastic season, all things told. It's a great platform to build on. Del Boy only used around £30k p/w of that massive 160k p/w budget, and now the Tykes have got a better reputation, there could be some big free signings on the horizon.

Dulwich Hamlet, meanwhile, flounder without Del Boy's steady hand. After a 10th placed finish in 20/21 they slump to 22nd the following season and are relegated. F in the chat for the boys at Dulwich :(.

This time next season we'll be playoff-aires!

    Football Manager 21 Wishlist

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:59 PM PDT

What is in your wish list for FM21

    Mine are

    1. An instruction for players to look for a pass instead of shooting to eliminate wingers smashing the ball into the side netting ignoring the pass to the open striker for the easy tap in

    2. Interaction with Staff - I have good coaches and they just do their thing? I'd like maybe to get a report on how well they're doing and be able to praise/warn them etc

    3. More player instructions

    4. Meaningful/reworked shouts

    5. More attributes for example short passing and long passing, curve, shot power etc

Please meet Victor Manuel Camara, a 27 year old Spanish central defender.

Bought him from Almeria for 20m now 7 years ago and signed on a 5+3 deal. Everything was great but in summer of 2033 Barcelona came with a bid which I rejected. Now on his final year, Camara got mad and made me promise that if Barca came with a good bid (106m pounds to be exact) I'll let him go. To my surprise Barca actually came back with this huge bid but I still rejected it which made both Camara and several of his teammates mad at me.

Then we had 5 months of me trying to sweeten him through teammates, good form praises, changing squad and transfer status, etc. But one day I get a message saying that Vincent decided to leave on a free. I thought I could still salvage our relationship and in a couple of weeks he actually first said that he is ready to rebuild the trust between him and his manager and then I get this in my inbox. However he still didn't want to sign a new contract so resigned to losing him I decided to offer him out to get some money for my future ex-captain.

Well, Victor, I guess I'll be having the last laugh. Good luck in your new club.
