Tactics and strategy
In the last part, we got some interesting contributions from the comments, so we thought it would be a good idea to go a bit more in depth on our methods and our aims. The main focus of the save is not really the final objective (winning the league) but more the entire process leading up to it, and how many attempts it takes us to do it. Therefore, we are trying to limit our number of attempts as much as possible, both as a way to put pressure on ourselves to be better but also because doing this save is actually illegal according to the Geneva Convention. For this to work, our strategy is as follows: during the first half of the season, we are going to try to form a considerable gap between us in first place and the second placed team, which is of course gonna be Bayern because this is the Bundesliga we're talking about. After we play all 17 teams or a gap starts to form, it becomes just that little bit easier: all we have to do is to match whatever the second placed team is doing. This strategy does mean during the first half of the season we are likely going to be playing a LOT of games. Also, last post a user very cleverly pointed out we could be using instant result to make the process quicker, but we prefer to do it the old fashioned way because it's infinitely funnier and also because for art to mean anything at all you have to suffer for it, damn it!
As for the tactics used, we'll use variations of a 4-1-2-3, which is basically what everyone involved in this uses on their personal saves anyway, with the main one being this bad boy (courtesy of /u/nmrt), perfect for when you're the underdog in a game and need a smash and grab, which in our case is all the time, because even with all our signings Paderborn are still woefully unprepared compared to the rest of the league.
Me and the boys ready to make history
Now then, if you remember, our first game of the season was gonna be against Leverkusen away...
I believe in miracles
0-2.
How many attempts you ask?
One.

None of us believed what we were seeing. Everyone on the team was truly incredible. Tiago Sá made peak Manuel Neuer look like Champions League final Loris Karius in comparison, that man was absolutely on fire. Jota came on in the 70th minute and played an absolute blinder, a sign of things to come. It was a truly remarkable game all around.
At this point, the aim of the challenge had completely shifted. We wouldn't even need to save scum our way to the title, we were so good. After the Saarbrucken scare, this was just what we needed to lift our spirits. There was something special about this team.
Next up was Freiburg at home. They scored first, Vasiliadis scored two bangers to put us in front, they equalized in the 95th minute from a corner. It took us 4 attempts to win that game.
I hate this game.
Football Manager: Prepare To Lose Edition
Wolfsburg away beckoned. Going into the game, we didn't really know what to think. Against Leverkusen we played brilliantly, and we did get quite unlucky in the Freiburg games. At this point, we were facing these first few games like pre-season: we had a lot of time to take a look at the players and the tactics, and see what worked and didn't.
This one was absolute hell. Mbabu and Roussilon made an absolute mockery of our fullbacks. They played a 3-4-3 that proved way too difficult for Diogo Clemente and Victor Garcia to handle. Speaking of Diogo Clemente, he conceded FIVE penalties during our attempts, showing as much restraint in the box as a 12 year old with their parent's credit card. Now, none of us claim to be very good at this game, and we do play these sessions at about 3 in the morning and I may have been a bit drunk during some of these games, so cut us a little bit of slack, but there was nothing we could do. The closest we came to winning was on Attempt 5, before Diogo Clemente decided to take out João Victor inside the box and it all came crashing down. We played this game 12 times in total before settling for a draw.
Schalke and Hertha were relatively uneventful ties. We won on our first attempt against Schalke thanks to a Martin Chrien penalty, and beat Hertha on our second try after we weren't satisfied with a 0-0 draw. The game we were all be waiting for came next: current Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
One magical night in Paderborn
This was by far our toughest challenge yet. We faced some good teams already this season, but Bayern are the team to beat for anyone trying to win the Bundesliga, and their team, especially when compared to ours, is stacked with talent. We knew a win at home against Bayern would be crucial to create that gap we mentioned at the beginning, and avoid us having to chase a specific result later on in the season.
It was a nightmare. Martin Chrien got himself sent off early, and it was all downhill from there. Coutinho was unplayable that game, banging in two amazing free kicks and assisting Odriozola, before a Goretzka long shot in the second half confirmed it was heartbreak hotel for the Paderborn side.
Thankfully, the whole concept of the save revolves around us playing the same game over and over again, so we weren't too fussed. It was early enough in the season that we could maybe settle for a draw if a win proved too difficult and other results went our away.
Then this happened:
Absolute filth
In what was probably my most celebrated win on FM in a long long time, we managed to completely fleece Bayern in only our second attempt. Just look at those stats! While all of us would like to say everything went according to plan after we carefully conconcted a tactic based on our own minutious data analysis and thorough planning and man management, the truth is the FM gods were just looking our way that day. After Tanque finished off an amazing bit of play created by none other than Jota, we parked the mother of all buses in front of goal and sneaked away with a win. Somewhere in North London, José Mourinho himself wept, not knowing why.
Naturally, we followed up our unreal win with a 1-0 loss at home against Mainz, after Tiago Sá had a bit of what the kids these days call a "bruh moment" and sprinted against a Mainz player, losing the ball in forbidden territory and allowing Bukhardt to tap it in to an open net. FM giveth, but FM taketh away. Only took us a second attempt to beat them, however, after Martin Chrien scored a brace from the penalty spot.
The Story So Far
After 7 matchdays, Paderborn were top of the table with 19 points, unbeaten in 7 games and defying the 1000-1 odds (where have I heard that before...) given by the bookies at the start of the season. However, we are also keeping track of, let's call them, alternative league tables. The actual numbers of games played was 24, and if we tally up all of our results, it leaves us with a staggering 22 points, which for all you math nerds out there means we had an average of 0,91 points per game. Yikes. At this rate, it would take us 86 games to reach the 78 point mark we set out in part 1.
If we only count our first attempts, however, we would sit at 9 points. For a team like Paderorn, that in our league simulations had a total of 23 points in 34 games and in real life is sitting comfortably at the bottom of the table with 19 points in 29 games (which, you will note, is the same exact number of points we have at matchday 7), that's not half bad. For those interested, here are our notes and how we record our data displayed in a neat little table.

The real stand out player has been Jota, who is excellent, despite having a dip in form every now and again. He makes up for it tenfold however, being an essential part of our attacking threat and our top scorer thus far. Another player who is definitely making a real difference is Tissone, who is absolutely bossing that defensive midfield position. The amount of counter attacks he creates by being able to tackle and find a player effectively is astonishing, and we got him on a free transfer! Not every transfer has been such a massive hit, though: both Diogo Clemente and Victor Garcia have had some disappointing performances, due to the system we're using demanding quite a lot from those wing backs, and do not seem up to the task. Although a weak spot, they're passable (considering we are, at the end of the day, still Paderborn), but this is something we are looking into.
Final Notes
We appreciated everyone that commented in the last post. We are really glad people are as invested in this project as us, and let me tell you, despite the tortuous amount of time and planning a save like this entails, it is extremely fun. We are aiming to post updates to the save on a weekly basis, so mark that on your calendars. Also, how many games do you think it's gonna take us to finish this? That's been a bit of a hot topic in our team, and we'd love to hear your thoughts.
Finally, and because I forgot to do it last time, shoutout to everyone who's contributing to this save:
- /u/diogz55 - our Director of Football and chief scout
- /u/nmrt - the assistant manager and the one who records all our attempts
- /u/korvaXTheMan - backroom staff and tactical consultant
