The Bielsista -- Three tactics based on three Bielsa teams.

Summary: I prepared three tactics based on three different Bielsa squads. Very attacking, very fluid. If the board has asked you to play entertaining or attacking football, this is perfect. Expect to see a high % of possession and beautiful football.

This isn't meant to be a game-breaking exploitative tactic. You'll probably lose some games. If that isn't your thing, this tactic isn't for you.

If you'd like to know more about the man himself and the tactic, please continue reading below.

    Foreward:

"He is like my football father. We are a generation of coaches that were his disciples. How he feels football, the passion he has for football, I think we all took that from him." - Mauricio Pochettino

I decided that I would take a break from European management and recreate the career of one of my favorite managers, Marcelo Bielsa. Throughout the challenge, I developed the following tactics attempting to emulate the style of one of my favorite characters in world soccer. I hope you enjoy reading this and using my tactic as much as I did while researching and developing it. I have poured over nearly every English language article about Bielsa I could find and watched hours of videos of his sides in action or subtitled speeches. He has a great mind for football, something both I and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola both agree with.

"It is important for me to say this about Marcelo because it doesn't matter how many titles he had in his career. We are judged by that - how much success we have, how many titles we have won. But that is much less influential than how he has influenced football and his football players. That is why, for me, he is the best coach in the world."

    Introduction:

Marcelo Bielsa has a unique place in modern football. His principles have influenced coaches from Tata Martino to Mauricio Pochettino. Pep Guardiola even consulted the man known as El Loco before taking over at Barcelona. Guardiola described him as football's most influential mind despite Bielsa having no major European titles to his name.

However, he is a winner. At his first job coaching Newell's Old Boys in Argentina, he guided them to two league titles and an improbable Copa Libertadores final appearance in 1992. The stadium in Rosario bares his name to commemorate his accomplishments with the club. Currently, Bielsa is the manager of Leeds United in England's Championship Division.

    The Shapes:

Bielsa has utilized a variety of tactical shapes at his various jobs, I've taken his three most recent successes and translated them into three shapes. These translations themselves are based on these illustrations of Bielsa's teams with Chile, Athletic Bilbao, and Olympique Marseille respectively.

"Marcelo Bielsa's Chile played the most attractive football in this World Cup." - Johan Cruyff

The first being his famous 3-3-1-3 which he deployed with Chile at the 2010 World Cup. As Michael Cox describes, "His back three and the holding midfielder are essentially the four defensive-minded players, whilst the two wing-backs surge forward whenever possible, trying to create overloads against opposition full-backs, and also venturing into more central attacking positions to provide a goal threat." The central striker works to assist in buildup play by holding up the ball and bringing in his striking partners on the flanks.

At Athletic Bilbao, Bielsa used a more traditional 4-3-3 shape. For our purposes, a sweeper keeper is introduced to assist the covering defender in balls over the top. The back two becomes a back three in buildup thanks to the halfback assuming the role of Carlos Gurpegi dropping back in line with the defenders and in possession seeks to screen the defenders and send recycled possession back into the final third. The AP takes on the role of Ander Iturraspe, linking the midfield and attack together, fashioning out chances for the forwards.

During his tenure at Marseille, Bielsa again retooled his shape to accommodate his players' strengths. Switching to a 4-2-1-3, he built his attack around maestro Dimitri Payet and the attack-minded wingbacks who were both crossing threats. The defensive midfield duo features a halfback that, like before, screens the defenders and drops between them in the buildup. The segundo volante acts as the Mario Lemina type, bombing forward and providing a late arrival into the box. Like many traditional tactics, the width comes from the wingbacks.

    The tactic:

"Concentración permanente, movilidad, rotación y repenitización"

Bielsa always sought to dominate possession while playing directly. He sought to reconcile these two seemingly opposite concepts of both holding onto the ball and moving it around in a direct manner. He uses all the width of the pitch to continually find open space to facilitate the direct passing. The idea is not to move the ball itself, rather it is to move the opposition around to create space. The very fluid team structure allows the players to rotate and change positions freely.

"My football, in defense, is very simple: We run all the time," Bielsa says. We will instead instruct our players to press more urgently and mark tighter with a higher defensive line and a much higher line of engagement. This keeps us more defensively sound while also maintaining aggression of pressing all over immediately after losing the ball.

    Players:

"I learned a lot from him and it is because of him that I am who I am. What I remember the most about Bielsa was the mentality that he tries his players to have." - Alexis Sanchez

Many players have flourished under Bielsa after being utilized in different positions.

A great example of this is Dimitri Payet. Bielsa brought him inside and turned him into the sides number 10, helping transform the latter years of Payet's career and earning him a place with France at the Euros.

Throughout his career, Bielsa believed in fitting players to his tactics. Arturo Vidal, a holding midfielder by trade, saw time at centerback, midfielder, and both left-and-right wingback throughout the 2010 world cup.

Like Vidal, Oscar De Marcos was deployed as both a midfielder and wingback for Athletic Bilbao. De Marcos thrived under Bielsa most notably scoring in the second leg of the Europa League tie with Manchester United at Old Trafford to put Athletic through to the next round.

You should look for players with high marks in vision, flair, work rate, off-ball movement, and teamwork. Bielsa once remarked, "I also don't like [teams] that only rely on the inspiration of their soloists, because when God doesn't turn them on, they are left totally at the mercy of their opponents." Your strikers should be strong with an aerial presence. The wingers need to be quality finishers relative to your striker. Try to find proficient passers at every position or put your players through heavy individual training to improve that.

PPMs can make or break your tactical setup. For example, if your halfback gets forward whenever possible, he's an awful choice in that position. On the other hand, if your advanced playmaker plays killer balls often, he will be a perfect fit. A few other examples include having your HB bring the ball out of defense, your AP dictating the tempo, your IWB dribbling through the center of the pitch, etc. The bottom line, paying attention to and training individual PPMs will make a difference.

The journey is the destination. Don't worry if your squad doesn't fit immediately. As Diego Maradona once said of Bielsa, "Marcelo made a team out of nothing." It is much more fun and rewarding to turn a talented defensive midfielder into a quality inverted wingback. Along the same lines, expect it to take time for your team to adapt to the tactic. It can take time to get the team playing well enough together to start really beating teams and playing together on the pitch. I constantly check squad dynamics and the tactical familiarity screen to adjust my individual training accordingly.

Enjoy the tactic, have fun, and if you choose to change something, always remember, "a man with new ideas is mad until he succeeds." Thank you.
