Rayo Vallecano - The left-wing club of Vallecas, Madrid (Season 1)

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:52 PM PDT

To be honest, I was inspired by u/Hurball's Millwall series to do a write-up on this save

Repeat introduction for those who have not seen my suggestions wanted post a while ago

Rayo Vallecano is based in Vallecas, a working class neighborhood within Madrid and are known for their ties to the local community. Rayo's fanbase is known for having prominent left-wing views, reflecting the left-wing culture of Vallecas, which had historically earned a reputation of being resistant to the Franco regime. Their ultras often display anti-fascism and anti-racism messages, and this characteristic has even affected signings, such as the case of Roman Zozulya, who the Rayo fans staged massive protests against the signing of because of alleged links with fascist or Nazi ideology.

The purpose of this save is to behave and build Rayo Vallecano in a manner that represents the political culture of Vallecas

    1. I will not buy any players from teams whose ultras have a notable reputation for right-wing ideology (ie. Lazio, Millwall, Legia Warsaw, Beitar Jerusalem). I will not sell any players to them unless they pay the release clause or I am desperate to get rid of the player. If there are any players who have a reputation in this regard like Paulo di Canio did, I will also avoid signing them to replicate how the Rayo ultras rejected Zozulya. Furthermore, I will refuse to do business with cross-town rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Interestingly, Rayo does frequently make loan and transfer deals with them in real life, but I am going to make it a club policy to scrap that and terminate all current loans from them as soon as possible

    2. I will be more willing to make transfer deals with clubs who have a reputation of having left-leaning ultras (ie. St. Pauli, Livorno, Standard Liege, Marseille, AEK Athens).

    3. As part of the club's ties to the community of Vallecas, I will prioritize trying to bring up homegrown players from the youth system whenever possible, while players I do purchase on the transfer market must adhere to the club's left-wing ideology. Furthermore, I will prioritize certain attributes/traits as part of the commitment to the community and the collective

    Most important Attributes/Traits

    Teamwork

    Bravery

    Work Rate

    Gets Crowd Going

    The Beginning

As I do for all of my saves, transfers for the first window are turned off. I quickly learn that the team is weighed down by higher salaries left over from being recently relegated, resulting in a board that is tight with money and offers me no transfer money, so I accept that any changes I want to make to the squad will have to wait until next season. I evaluate my squad and am happy to see that I already have a decent core with solid preferred attributes. Most notably, I immediately identify Tito as my choice for captain, having a Professional personality and near perfectly epitomizing the kind of player I want for this team

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_6gwrb3xm%2Fkfb85jeucwz41

With Luis Advincula, an excellent right back and no slouch in the work rate and bravery attributes, already on the team, I immediately have Tito get started on becoming a left inverted full-back so I can have both of them start, and knowing that a role that is less dependent on physical attributes will suit an aging player well in the long term.

I have a solid ball-playing center back in Alejandro Catena, although his determination and work rate are a little low. Emiliano Velazquez looks decent, except he's out for the 1st half of the season due to an ACL tear. Esteban Saveljich becomes my 2nd starting CB, having much better teamwork and workrate than loanee Antonio Milic.

I have the perfect forward in Leonardo Ulloa, possessing high ratings in the preferred attributes and two very good hard-working midfielders in Oscar Valentin and Santi Comensana

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_6gwrb3xm%2Fqbqd8qvyfwz41

The wingers are underwhelming when it comes to having the desired attributes, but again, that will have to wait until next season to work on fixing due to the lack of transfer money. One of wingers is also a loan from that other white-wearing team in Madrid, so I refuse to even register him, prompting him to request to end his own, which I happily oblige. The new management does not want anything to do with any loaned players from either of those other Madrid teams, especially the ones most notably favored by the Franco regime (fun fact; Atletico actually were also once the favored team before Real Madrid became favored, once being associated with the Spanish airforce and being named Atletico Aviacion)

I begin assigning mentors, getting to work on bringing up Oscar Valentin's personality traits, having ear-marked him to be a future captain. I also try assigning appropriate mentors for talented youngsters Joni Montiel, Manu Navarro, and Alvaro Martin. Alvaro Martin unfortunately has a pathetic determination of 3, so I can't see him panning out all that well... Montiel is one of the worst in the squad in terms of the three preferred attributes, so he will have to be prepared to be sold for a tidy profit. Manu Navarro is a bit lacking in bravery despite decent physical attributes. I get him to start working on converting from a natural creative midfielder to becoming a BWM, hoping it will help him in the bravery attribute.

4-2-3-1 wide with a high-tempo vertical tiki-taka style becomes my preferred tactic for the season.

The season begins, but my players are having a little difficulty adjusting to the style of play, often finding themselves stuck doing a lot of sideways passing and struggling to create chances. We manage to go undefeated in the first 7 games with a decent 3 - 4 - 0 record, with no thanks to my goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, who seemed hellbent on stealing points away from my own team with his meme-like save percentage of 0%, allowing 6 goals from 6 shots on target, with the most recent game ending 1-1 due to him attempting to catch the ball and failing on a corner kick in the 80th minute. I criticize his form, but he apparently has as much self-awareness as he has saves and claims I'm being unfair. I bench him for former captain (now vice-captain) Alberto Garcia.

After a few tweaks to the system to get my players to be a bit more creative (Ulloa is changed from a pressing forward to a target forward, inverted winger Andres Martin is benched for regular winger Bebe), things start going much better (despite the following two games being 0-0 draws), with my team starting to find their scoring touch and my goalkeeper being able to save a damn shot. In November, Manu Navarro scores a dramatic 92nd minute winner against promotion rival Girona to complete a 3-2 comeback from being behind 2-0. Near the halfway point towards the end of December, Rayo is sitting pretty in 1st place with a 12 - 6 - 1 record. To my annoyance, Girona and Malaga have been tearing up the league in their own right and managed to stick close behind me despite me beating both of them. My team leads the league in least goals conceded and the media are praising my team for the positive atmosphere. Evidently my attempts at building a community-first team has had a good foundation. On the other hand, it seems the other teams in Spain must have some of that fascist sentiment in them, not taking kindly at all to my management philosophy and fouling my players so much that we lead the league by far in fouls received. We have been fouled almost 300 times, while the 2nd most fouled team was around a measly 170 fouls received. This has resulted in my team receiving a lot of bruised foot/bruised ankle injuries. Creative midfielder (rotated with Trejo) Jose Pozo got a sprained knee that put him out for 6 weeks from a nasty tackle from behind against Tenerife (tackler got a straight red card)

    Winter Transfers; The First Culling

Disaster strikes and starting goalkeeper Alberto Garcia picks up a bad hip injury in training, putting him out for 3 - 4 months. However, for some reason former starting goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski decides that is the perfect time to start complaining to me about his playing time. I try to be considerate and assure him that he will get his chance if he is patient, knowing that I was about to play him in the next game. He is not satisfied with that response and starts complaining to his teammates, so I decide to transfer list him and play a talented 19-year-old goalkeeper (Miguel Morro) instead. He makes just 1 save in his first game, a 3-0 mauling of Albacete, already doing infinitely better than Dimitrievski ever did in just his first game. We also pummel a couple lower league teams in the Copa Del Rey 9-0 and 5-0. Jony Montiel, Manu Navarro and Abdoulaye Ba decided to complain to me about Dimitrievski's playing time. Being on good terms with the rest of the squad and with Alberto Garcia notably disagreeing with Dimitrievski's complaints, I tell them go away and that the rest of the team will back me. Montiel and Navarro see the light and drop their complaints, but Ba keeps complaining. I've had enough and promptly transfer list both Ba and Dimitrievski, kicking them out for cut-price fees to the apparent displeasure of the fans and the board. Dimitrievski somehow falls upwards and ends up at Alaves while Ba gets punted out to some team in Greece. I take the time to criticize Dimitrievski in the press afterwards for being a negative influence in the locker room. Neither of their work rates and teamwork were up to scratch anyways, so I was also glad to be rid of them from that perspective. I'm sure that won't come back to bite me. The board and fans are upset that I sold, in their eyes, valuable depth for so little, but they will have to get used to it because I am perfectly happy to boot out anyone who doesn't conform with my team-first demands and starts thinking they are bigger than the team.

I fire my Head of Youth Development, who was painfully mediocre, and pick up a much better HoYD to take his place (screenshot was taken from my current season; forgot to take it at the time)

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_6gwrb3xm%2Fbu3pcxas10051

I terminate the loan of 3rd choice left back Antonio Luna, whose teamwork and bravery were both below 10. backup CB Antonio Milic asks me to end his loan, and with Emiliano Velazquez returning from his ACL injury, I grant his request. His workrate and teamwork were low anyways, which is why I didn't play him. Meanwhile, I reject offers for Oscar Trejo and Oscar Valentin. Both are quite happy at the club and do not raise a fuss despite the offers coming from La Liga sides. I make no transfers and move on to February, with Morro doing a solid job in goal, aside from having a hiccup against league rivals Girona, causing us to draw 2-2 despite being up 2-0 at halftime.

    Crashed into buses

In the middle of February, my team starts a bad run of form. Most of the teams have started parking the bus against us, and my tactic has started to fall apart. Like the start of the season, we are having trouble creating chances. We struggle at home against Real Oviedo and get a very unconvincing 2-1 victory thanks to 2 lucky goals in the last 5 minutes (30 yard shot from Tito and their goalkeeper missing the ball on a corner kick). We have a frustrating 1-0 loss at Tenerife and two 0-0 draws at home against Huesca and away at Albacete. Finally, my team completely forgets how to play football and suffers a disastrous 3-0 loss at home to Elche, marking our first home loss of the season. We have fallen into 3rd place behind Girona and Malaga and morale is low. Leading goalscorer Ulloa, my wingers Bebe and Alvaro Garcia, and playmaker Oscar Trejo have all contributed nothing for 6 games in a row. I organize a team meeting to raise spirits, change Ulloa back to a pressing forward, bench Alvaro Garcia for young winger Isi and bench Trejo for Jose Pozo. We return to goalscoring form with a vengeance, smashing Cadiz 4-1 (courtesy of an Ulloa hat trick) despite going behind early and sweeping aside Fuenlabrada 3-0. Sadly, Pozo gets injured again against Fuenlabrada after a harsh tackle, damaging his ankle ligaments and ruling him out for a month. I'm forced to bring Trejo back into the starting XI, but he delivers with with an excellent performance against Deportivo la Coruna. We blow yet another 2-0 lead, losing 3-2 at Alcorcon with my goalkeeper and defenders having a bad game. I bench CB Saveljich after this and bring Emiliano Velazquez into the starting lineup. We then face league rivals Malaga with the chance to reclaim our place at the top of the table after Girona and Malaga had patchy runs of form of their own, but their goalkeeper has a worldie of a game, making 14 saves, including stopping 4 clear cut chances. This resulted in a frustrating 0-0 draw. We also face down Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey, and despite attempting to park a bus of our own, we get swept aside 3-0.

I also receive my very first youth intake. Although the overall group is not very good, we do get a decent CB prospect and a gem of a right back with a Spirited personality (screenshot is from several months after acquiring him, taken same time as I took the screenshot of my HoYD)

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_6gwrb3xm%2F6c25ygyj30051

To be honest, he might actually be more suited to becoming a CB, but good FBs are harder to find, and I like having a FB who can defend well in addition to attack.

Meanwhile I get notice that two of my short-listed players, Robin Lod (Minnesota United) and Oier (Osasuna club legend) have been transfer listed. This news makes me absolutely delighted, and I immediately make offers to sign them. Neither player were pursued by anyone else, so I was able to easily sign up both for a combined cost of only £1.25m. Both players fit the club ideology and are perfect to bring into the club for mentoring purposes. Robin Lod hails from the city of Helsinki and has a model citizen personality. Minnesota United is based in a very liberal (by USA standards) district. I'm sure he will fit in with this lib team just fine. Oier fits my philosophy as perfectly as Tito, carrying the coveted Gets Crowd Going trait and having a 17 rating in Bravery and an 18 rating in Teamwork and Work rate. Finally I will have someone to mentor my players to learn the Gets Crowd Going trait. Hopefully I am able to teach it to future captain Oscar Valentin despite already being 25 (if this is not possible, please let me know in the comments. Admittedly I do not know if mentoring traits works very well for players who are already in their prime). Oier already comes from a left-leaning culture, with Osasuna's main ultra group, the Indar Gorri, being an anti-fascist group.

    The Home Stretch

As we reach the end of April, I'm pleased to welcome back Alberto Garcia from injury for the last 5 games of the season. Morro did a decent job, but showed his inexperience on occasion. Meanwhile, the mentoring units seem to have done decent work, bumping up the personality traits and determination of Santi Comensana, Oscar Valentin and Manu Navarro. Oscar now has a Resolute personality. Andres Martin however seems determined to not improve his determination, still remaining at an almighty 3 determination...

With Alberto Garcia back in the fold, my defense stabilizes. We finish out the last 5 games without conceding a goal with 4 wins out of 5. We clinch promotion with 2 games to spare by defeating Las Palmas at home 4-0, during which I gave young prospect Pedro his debut, making him the youngest player ever for Rayo Vallecano. We win the title by comfortably defeating Sporting Gijon 2-0 in our last game, although Malaga tied in their last game anyways, so our result ended up being irrelevant. Girona ends up winning the playoffs, becoming the 3rd promoted team.

    https://reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/images%2Ft2_6gwrb3xm%2Fty7p1ggpzzz41

And with that, the 1st season has come to a close, and fortunately for me it was a resounding success. Unfortunately, I still have little money, and my board are a tight ass when it comes to wages, especially for coaches. For some ridiculous reason, everyone except one person demands for downright extortionate wages (£100,000 per year or higher) just to be a coach for the B team, when my board only allows me to offer up to £67000 per year and do not budge on increasing that no matter how much I ask. As a result, I literally only have 1 coach for that team. And if I want a head coach for the B team, everyone I ask demands over £300,000 per year... I've even tried asking completely shit coaches and still get the same wage demands...

    End of Season

Once again, it seems that the other Spanish teams were not a fan of Rayo's leftist team culture, mercilessly hacking my team to the point that we ended the season with 622 fouls received (almost 15 fouls per game, nearly averaging a foul every 6 minutes), with opposition players having been sent off 6 times (including 5 straight red cards). The 2nd most fouled team was only fouled a little over 400 times. I'm outraged at this flagrant targeted violence against my team (and have honestly never seen the AI get so many red cards against me in a season before) and can only hope that La Liga teams are much more civilized. Although perhaps I shouldn't talk about civility when I am absolutely intending on having my team bring the hacking and slashing to the formerly fascist-backed scum.

Center back Alejandro Catena wins the fans player of the year. My personal pick would be Tito for his leadership and consistency. He was phenomenal converting to an left inverted wing back, and even managed to somehow score a couple bangers. I happily give him a new contract with an automatic extension should he play at least 10 games next season (he will), although he surprisingly asks for a lower wage. He is evidently a selfless individual and I consider him a great captain, so I give him a higher wage than he asked for anyways.

Manu Navarro is young player of the year. He has played well as ball winning center midfield and most notably helped set the tone for Rayo's promotion charge with his stoppage time winner against Girona. I just hope he is able to improve on his relatively low bravery and teamwork (only 7 and 8 respectively), but being only 19, he still has time to learn

Ulloa ended the season as top scorer of the league with 25 goals. My team's top assister was Bebe with 8 assists. However, Bebe does not have the team mentality down, with low teamwork and bravery ratings. No one is bigger than the team, especially under my management where the team and community are absolutely paramount, and with Bebe apparently being a "team leader" in the locker room, he needs to be culled to remove his non-team first influence. As a result, Bebe becomes the first casualty of the new season in order to make room for Robin Lod, who is clearly much more of a team player with 15 teamwork compared to Bebe's 8 teamwork. Bebe complains about how I'm treating a so-called team leader such as him, but to no avail. Complaints are absolutely not tolerated and such personalities are not desired as team leaders, so he is told to fuck off and is pushed out the door to Aston Villa for a cut price £2.9m.

The board and fans are once again not please with my decision, but none of my players are particularly concerned. They have learned well what is expected here at Rayo Vallecano

Why does stuff like this happen?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 01:19 PM PDT

So, I'm managing Real Madrid and this year's CL final is played at Santiago Bernabéu.

Come May, I've made my way to the final by getting past City, Inter and PSG. I've won La Liga, and there is not a team in the world that scored more goals than my team.

May 12, we beat Atlético at home 5-0. Their manager: Pep Guardiola.

So, my record at the Bernabéu this season, including CL and Cup matches is 27 wins, one draw and no losses. I've scored 90 and condeded 18 goals at my stadium.

So the Champions League final is scheduled for May 26 and I'm playing Liverpool. In a well-balanced match, as the odd makers suggested it would be, Liverpool win in extra-time. In my two-year reign at Madrid I've played 52 matches at the Bernabéu in which my team has scored 179 goals, a bit under 3.5 goals per game. I've checked the results from the previous season, too, and it turns out that Real Madrid has scored at least once in every game played at the Bernabéu during the last 26 months.

So I guess it's quite convenient not to score a goal at your stadium in the most important game in the last 10 years, arguably in the club's history.

I wouldn't be this mad about it if on May 25, the day before the final, Liverpool didn't bring in a new manager. His name? Pep Guardiola.
