Dr. Savescum or: How I learned to stop worrying and win the league with Paderborn- Part 1

Ah, save scumming. We all know the feeling of losing 1-0 to 17th placed Sassuolo after their left back scores a 30 yard bicycle kick in the 99th minute (their first shot on target of course), and looking at that tempting Quit to desktop prompt. Are you sure you want to quit without saving? says FM, trying to be helpful while blissfully unaware that you fully intend to embrace the multiverse theory.

While we all know at least one save scummer, who swears by his mother he went 37-1-0 in the Premier League with Burnley while not knowing what's an overlap, the practice is vehemently shunned by the community. Being accused of save scumming is one of the gravest things you can accuse a football manager player, up there with using the editor and playing as PSG, because it invalidates all their accomplishments. It's cheating, an "impure" way of winning.

Which is why, starting today, we are going to see just how powerful save scumming can be.

    The Challenge

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine came up with a genius idea: how hard would it be to save scum your way to a league title win with one of the worst teams in that division? Well, that's what we're gonna find out. Our goal in this save is to take a team destined to battle relegation and use our time travelling powers to guide it to a miraculous league win. This is not an individual project which is why I keep using "we" instead of "I", not because I'm slowly losing my marbles due to quarantine, but because this is a collaborative save between me and a couple of friends who are all contributing in their own way. The team chosen for this project was Paderborn. Their meteoric rise to the Bundesliga meant their team is more suited to a mid table finish in the 2.Bundesliga than top flight glory, making this save more challenging and a more accurate way to test just how powerful save scumming actually is.

    Prologue: Doing research

Before we started the save, we needed some guidelines on how exactly we were going to accomplish our goals. We didn't want a 100% win record or an unbeaten season, we just wanted to be champions. Which is why we started a separate save, starting unemployed with no badges and only the Bundesliga loaded in, and simulated 5 years into the future. Our goal was to see how many points were needed to win the league, and we ran the sim a few times to avoid any unusual variables. On average, you need 78 points to win the Bundesliga, which equates to about 25 wins and fewer than 5 losses. We had our goal.

We were also interested to see how Paderborn would do, and well...

    Oh dear

This was going to be difficult.

Getting started: Building a tittle winning team

We finally started the save. Having a look at the resources at our disposal, we had a daunting task ahead of us. Paderborn starts with almost no staff and with a transfer budget of 250k. Seeing as we were competing with the likes of Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, that was going to be an issue. Most of the players are not up to standard for the Bundesliga (they did get two back to back relegations in our test save). There was no way we were gonna get 25 wins out of these lads, even with the dark magical arts of save scumming.

Luckily, we had an ace up our sleeve.

One of our friends specialized in doing saves with teams almost destitute. He flourished in teams like Panathinaikos or Moreirense. His knowledge of the transfer market is honestly frightening. Naturally, we put him in charge of transfers. We gave him the tactic and the overall philosophy we wanted to play, and he got to work.

His first order was to literally offer out our entire first team, and promptly accept all offers. An unorthodox approach, but we had no money and a lackluster team, and I had seen enough of his saves to know better than to doubt him. All players who did not get any offers were offered out on loan. After all this business, we had about 5M to spend on transfers. He said it was more than enough.

We bought what felt like the entirety of the Liga NOS minnows. Douglas Tanque from Paços de Ferreira was our marquee signing, and he went for less than a million up front. We abused clauses and installments to get as many players as we could in a single window. We thought since this was a a one season challenge we didn't really care about the financial state of Paderborn after we were done, but the truth is Paderborn was prospering after we finished our business.

They had about 10M when we came in

Diogo Clemente from Oliveirense, Lucas Possignolo from Portimonense, Tiago Sá from Braga, Hocko and Tissone on a free, Jota on loan from Benfica as well as african legends Asamoah Gyan and Siphone Tshabalala were just some of the business we made. Bargain season was upon us. No, you get no points for guessing where we're from.

With our team built, all we needed now was to start the season proper. We had a cup game against fourth tier Saarbrucken, and we were hopeful of a good result. We decided to play the cup without save scumming to see just how far we'd go, and because save scumming our way to a double sounded really painful. The first game was...underwhelming.

No shame going to penaltis against a fourth tier side, right?

We did win in the end, but it took 120 minutes + penalties to break down a team from the fourth tier. We were a bit worried after this game. To add to our worries, the first game of the season was away against Leverkusen...

    Oh dear.

In the next part we'll talk about our strategy going into the season, as well as how the first half of the season went. Since we're already a bit further ahead than this (at about October), feel free to recommend signings or any other useful piece of advice. Hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

    Database size question

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:31 PM PDT

So to state the obvious, I know that the more players and leagues you load the slower the game will progress.

Anyways I made the new guy mistake of thinking my computer it's a beast and can handle 125k players and almost all leagues active (not all playable). Anyways I'm in the second season, while the load times aren't terrible I would definitely enjoy them being faster.

I can't quiet wrap my mind around how I should set my leagues. I enjoy the realism and the stats but at the end of the day, I'm playing with Aston Villa and I'll never look at South Africa or Slovakia. But I don't know if I don't include the league what I am ultimately losing.

Any suggestions + explanation of a good set up for someone that's wants to have a decent amount of players and load times? Trying to find a balance.

For example, I like to have all the major leagues have at least 3 divisions, just to see if a small club will make it to the top at some point, or to see a player come from a small club and make it big, but could I experience this without including the league? What do I lose by not including the league?

What's the difference between playable and view only?
