How Good Can I Make the Worst National Team in the World? Episode 1: Landing in The Valley

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:15 PM PDT

Anguilla, a British Overseas territory in the Caribbean with the same population as the Wirral seaside town of West Kirby, has the worst men's international football team in the world according to the April 2020 edition of the FIFA World Rankings. Football takes a backseat here to boat racing, cricket, rugby and athletics, only nine amateur sides exist and the national team has only won four games in its 35 year history.

Then I became the national team manager.

I take over the team one match into their Nations League campaign - a 3-0 defeat at Puerto Rico. Based on my limited knowledge of CONCACAF football (and also on the group's other result), this seems like a one horse race, so I set myself the lofty goal of scoring at least one past the U.S. territory in the return fixture.

Happily, my assistant suggests the Route One 4-4-2 I've been experimenting with in some of my other saves. The best real world analogy I can make is the Norwich team under Mike Walker that finished third in the Premier League and knocked Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Cup - "You get three points for 4-3 and only one for 0-0." In practice, it's more like a 4-1-5. Numbers 4, 5 and 6 win the ball in the first third and if they're far back enough, they give it to the side backs who hoof the ball to the number 8, inverted wingers and poachers who are encouraged to dribble, move through channels and take long shots.

Starting where I am, I'm the first manager to be able to use newgens. There's a couple of pretty good ones but by far the best is this teenage centre back, who I expect will be Anguilla's most capped player by the time he can drink in America. I've also found a new captain in this ball winning midfielder with dual English nationality. Sorry Gareth, you ain't having him.

As the Anguillan season has not started yet, I have a clean bill of health for my first international break. It's at this point that I realise that after the Guatemala game, there's a friendly against Saint Barthélemy, one of the four countries Anguilla has beaten in real life and the only one it has a 100% record against. It won't go towards rank points, but I'm hoping to keep that record going.

Expectedly, we went 3-0 down in the first half. Although only the third goal was from open play, the direct tactic wasn't working and we registered one shot all half. The second half began as a better, but more subdued performance as I switched from positive to counter. We held on until the 65th minute, when a heavily marked Ruvin Richardson pumped the ball to Jonathan Guishard, who dribbled past a complacent Carlos Castrillo to bury it from 20 yards out with the top of his right foot. My objective to net against the lesser of the two teams in our group had been surpassed and the one man and his dog at the AFA National Stadium were hooping and hollering. The match ended 4-1. No surprises, but we did kick on in the second half, registering 5 shots after the goal and defending well for a drawn 45 minutes against a team 63 places above us in the world rankings. Just a shame that my players reacted to this support as if they were Manchester City and they had been knocked out of the FA Cup by Curzon Ashton, but ah well.

As for the Saint Barthélemy result, the fact that we needed a penalty to win is the most FM thing I've ever seen.

Stay tuned for Episode 2 where we mercifully put a bullet in finish up our Nations League campaign against Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

I've just released an update for The Athletic's MLS Reimagined and a brand new corresponding CONCACAF Champions League/CONCACAF American League database!

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:55 PM PDT

    Hi there!

Coltons13 here! You may remember me from a few databases I've posted here, most notably my American Regionalized Pyramid, which led to the very fun Full Mingo challenge from u/ForwardMadisonFC, and my more recent creation, The Athletic's MLS Reimagined.

I'm here today to tell you about a new update for The Athletic's MLS Reimagined, containing several bug fixes (most notably USL League One playing just one round of games), as well as a new sister project I've just released.

To go along with The Athletic's MLS Reimagined V1.0, I'd like to introduce you to CCL & CAL Reimagined!

Steam page of The Athletic's MLS Reimagined V1.0

Steam page of CCL & CAL Reimagined

This databases contains something I've wanted to see for a long time: A total re-work of the international club competition structure for CONCACAF. I've been tired of the boring, 16-team knockout tournament featuring mostly U.S., Mexican, Costa Rican, Honduran and Canadian clubs. I wanted to add some variety and so modeling off the UEFA competitions, I've massively expanded the CONCACAF Champions League and have added a second-tier structure, the CONCACAF American League (akin to the UEFA Europa League).

Each tournament (CCL & CAL) are 64-team, full-on competitions featuring teams from every one of the 43 CONCACAF nations in the game - complete with 6-match group stage and two-legged knockout ties all the way to the final - which is a single match hosted at a neutral site! The group stage features 16 groups of four, with only the top finisher advancing to the first knockout round.

Drawing from the top-placed teams from the top domestic division of each league, the competition is properly seeded so groups are relatively evenly distributed in terms of strength. While some nations are more represented than others, akin to European coefficient placements, every single nation features at least one team in the group stage of both competitions, there are no qualifying rounds.

Here's a breakdown of the number of teams each nation has in each competition, which was determined by reputation at game start:

    Nation CCL Spots CAL Spots
    Mexico 4 2
    USA 4 2
    Costa Rica 4 2
    Honduras 3 2
    Panama 3 2
    Jamaica 3 2
    Canada 2 2
    Trinidad & Tobago 2 2
    Haiti 2 2
    Guatemala 2 2
    Nicaragua 2 2
    El Salvador 1 2
    Cuba 1 2
    Martinique 1 2
    Curacao 1 2
    French Guiana 1 2
    Barbados 1 2
    Guyana 1 2
    Suriname 1 2
    Dominican Republic 1 2
St. Kitts and Nevis 1 2
    Bermuda 1 1
    Guadaloupe 1 1
    Antigua and Barbuda 1 1
    St. Vincent / Grenadines 1 1
    St. Lucia 1 1
    Aruba 1 1
    Grenada 1 1
    Puerto Rico 1 1
    Beliza 1 1
    Bonaire 1 1
    Dominica 1 1
    Cayman Islands 1 1
    Bahamas 1 1
Turks and Caicos Islands 1 1
    British Virgin Islands 1 1
Saint Pierre and Miquelon 1 1
    U.S. Virgin Islands 1 1
    Saint Martin 1 1
    Anguilla 1 1
    Sint Maarten 1 1
    Montserrat 1 1
    Saint Bethelemy 1 1
    Previous Year's CAL Champion 1 0

This type of re-work of CONCACAF's international structure has been something I've wanted to do for some time, so I hope you all enjoy playing as much as I'm going to!
