What's this about?
A while (actually one and a half years) ago I started a journeyman save on FM 17 in the style that is known as "Director's Debacle Challenge" or "Director of Football Challenge", where you let your DoF decide on contracts and transfers. Since it turned out to be an entertaining save for me and I already did a write-up in German, I thought I'd share at least parts of it here, depending on whether the sub is interested.
So these are the rules for this save:
- The DOF handles all transfers, ingoing and outgoing, on his own (I can't suggest players or reject offers)
- The DOF handles all contract negotiations on his own, for both players and staff
- Youth teams and their training etc. are handled by their respective staff
- I can interact with players (make promises etc.) and the board (adjust budgets, requests) if I deem it necessary
- I don't apply for jobs myself, only waiting for offers
- Press conferences and interviews are handled by my assistant, I may dignify specific questions or pressers with my own answers
- Playable leagues are the top two divisions from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain
Basically that leaves me with training, tactics and selecting line-ups. I won't bother too much with training, this I can say already. I might apply suggestions from my assistants for training intensity, individual training, player traits or match training. Other than that it will simply be balanced training with average intensity and a reasonable amount of match training.
Season 2016/17
We start this save in the summer of 2016, unemployed. We, that is my alter ego Salvatore Paghetti, an Italian ex-player on national level with the highest coaching license. First thing I have to learn is patience. The first sackings don't happen before October. In Italy, boards don't seem nervous at all. It's already the 19th November when relegation-troubles Salernitana sack their manager and only two weeks later they invite me to an interview. In the end, they decide on someone else, just as Trapani Calcio before Christmas. While I'm gripped by self-doubt it finally gets real. Before the end of the year I'm approached by Spezia Calcio and on the 2nd of January 2017 we sign a 2-year-deal. I have a job. In one of the ugliest towns in Italy with no noteworthy football history - exactly like I envisaged the start of my glorious career.
At least there's not much pressure in Spezia, the board's goals are moderate. The team is currently sitting in 15th place and we aim for a place in the upper half of the table, which is only a few points away.
But before I care about any of this, there's a man to meet. He's called Pietro Fusco, the Director of Football of Spezia. The 45y old has been at the club since 2009. He's adequate in judging player's abilities (11) and has a good eye for their potential (16). And he's about to become the most influential person at the club as I delegate all the transfer and contract activities to him.
Now, let's look at our squad:

Among our best players are Chichizola, a GK on Serie A level; Migliore, club icon and strong leftback; and Fabbrini, a great playmaker, unfortunately only on loan from Birmingham. The wingers are average at best, but we have a good central midfield. So I decide on a 4-4-2 Diamond with wingbacks providing the width, this should play into the strengths of Migliore and Fabbrini.

Only one day after my arrival, the Serie B transfer window opens and Pietro Fusco can get busy. He holds a transfer budget of €1.2m and has about €0.3m space in the wage budget. He proposes to remove Errasti and Nenê from the transfer list, which I agree to. He then proceeds to work on the staff by recruiting new people. His first big business on the transfer front in this windows turns out to be a sale. De Col heads for Hannover in exchange for €1.4m. This leaves us with only one rightback with Martic. There's no sight of a replacement signing soon. I expect a busy Deadline Day, instead Fusco takes a day off which I'm sure is well deserved. This man already irritates me.
At least the league bears some better news. After two friendlies against lower league sides to boost moral, my debut in Bari is nervously anticipated. We hold on to an early lead by Fabbrini only to concede late. But in stoppage time a slapstick goal by Giannetti secures three points. With another away win at Carpi (4.) we climb to 11th and thus already meet the expectations of the board. Meanwhile I tweaked the roles in my tactic slightly.

We start February by beating Cittadella and conquering Frosinone. This is followed by two draws against Brescia and SPAL. The month is rounded off with a 4-1 over bottom of the league Ascoli. A run of eleven games unbeaten and 5th place - the board honours it with 65% confidence. DoF Fusco remains quiet besides giving two youth players professional contracts.
A 2-1 in Cesena marks my first loss, but we recover quickly, beating Latina and Ternana in the process. Then our offense struggles, which results in two goalless draws against Novara and Salernitana. With these results, the direct promotion spots are out of sight again. But it's time to make ourselves familiar with the somewhat obscure promotion rules of the Serie B.

In conclusion, every team from 4th to 8th place participate in the playoffs if they are less than 15 points behind the 3rd place. 6 teams in the playoffs are almost a certainty this year and we're set to be one of them.
On the pitch, we're hard to beat, mainly because our defense excels. A 2-0 victory over Vicenza is followed by three draws before we can win again, 2-0 at home against Entella. With three games to go against opposition in the bottom half, playoffs are more or less secured.

Meanwhile Fusco has resumed his duties or at least some of it. A dozen youth players gets new contracts. He tries the same for Pulzetti and Nenê but fails, and on top of that they're angry now. Brilliant work. At least he manages to extend one contract then, with Djokovic. That's important, because as Fabbrini regressed a little bit, the Serb became more and more a key player over the last two months. As things stand, we have just 15 players in the first team next season. Fusco has some work to do.
We continue with an unusually wild game at Avellino where we come out on top 3-5. We're sitting in 3rd place now which would get us to the playoff semifinal directly. We then take an embarrassing loss at home against Pisa and can't win our last game in Perugia either. Luckily Carpi and Entella bottle as well so we remain 3rd.

In the playoff semifinal we meet Ternana and make short work of them. 0-2 away and 3-0 at home - we fight for a place in the Serie A. Our opponent is Carpi, we have won both encounters this season. The two-legged final is a real nail-biter. We draw 0-0 in the away game and have everything in our hands at home. The guests park the bus with a 5-4-1 and we remain clueless until Fabbrini shoots us to the top flight with a controversial penalty.
The board is delighted and doubles the transfer and wage budget for next season. Meanwhile Fusco has managed to give Pulzetti and Nenê another one-year-contract. He's in the mood now, signing new deals with Sciaudone, Terzi and Signorelli. Hopefully he doesn't just waste all the money on new contracts for our players. On the other hand, these aren't that many - because I get reminded of all the loans that end this summer. Among them Fabbrini, Giannetti and Martic, three important starters. Fusco concentrates on improving the staff for now and then tells me that every player gets a wage increase of 25% due to the promotion. With that our wage budget is already off limits. You have to be fucking kidding me!?
Season 2017/18
The summer transfer window opens and DoF Fusco has to do business now. I shift money from the transfer in the wage budget so he can at least bring in some loans. More money through changing the season goals is not possible or would give very little - and staying up will already require a huge effort. But instead of signing some players Fusco just hands out new contracts Oprah-style and the wage budget is used up in no time. This man is a maniac. I have 16 players in my squad and only a handful of them is even worthy of the Serie A. In my desperation I turn to the U20. Anyone with the slightest chance to be called to higher things gets a promotion. These are three midfielders in Juande, Maggiaro and Acamparo and with Galli thankfully also a rightback.
As the month goes on and with a lack of other options, Fusco is indeed on the lookout for some loan business. He brings back Martic as rightback as well as a backup for Migliore on the left. The talented striker Rossi joins us from Lazio. Until Deadline Day not much else is happening. I'm just glad no one leaves us. But Fusco is not done yet. He loans another striker from Juventus and targets Arellano from River Plate. He's a central midfielder where we absolutely don't need more personnel, but nobody cares for my opinion. The Argentinians agree and Arellano joins on loan as well. Our wage budget is over the top again and that concludes this transfer window.
Pre-season is going well, with 5 wins in 6 matches, although mainly against lower opposition. The only surprise is a convincing 2-0 against Panathinaikos, but I suppose they're not as good anymore as my nostalgia claims them to be. With the departure of Fabbrini, we lack a number 10, so I tweaked my tactics again. We're a little bit more defensive now which can't hurt in the Serie A. The bookmakers see us on 19th place.

The season starts with a qualifying round to the Coppa Italia, we record a solid 3-0 win against Serie B plebs Trapani. The first league game is crucial - away at fellow relegation candidate Empoli. We snatch a 0-2 win. A bigger caliber awaits when we host Sampdoria. At halftime they lead 0-1 after having made us look like fools. I yell at everybody because I don't know that else to do. Somehow we win 3-1 in pure FM-style and I'm mildly proud of myself. After another win at Verona, promoted alongside us, I need to print the standings.

Of course it can't continue like that and it doesn't. After a draw with Udinese we travel to Juventus, where we get taught a lesson and are lucky to escape with only a 2-0 loss. A week later however, we get our biggest scalp so far, beating Roma 2-1, not even undeserved. Inter on the other hand doesn't underestimate us - we go down 4-0 in the Giuseppe Meazza. After an unlucky draw to Cagliari we play Sassuolo. We're down 0-2 only three minutes in but instead of a thrashing we come back from nowhere just like against Sampdoria and win 3-2. In Napoli I try a new 4-1-4-1 tactic which earns a hard-fought point, only to get crushed next week by Fiorentina.
Nonetheless, we sit on 7th place at the end of October, comfortably above the relegation zone. We should get some more points from weaker opposition in the next three months. My main issue currently is that our older centre backs are deteriorating quite fast. In the meantime, Fusco regularly appears in my office that some of the players don't deserve their current salary. While I can't disagree, let me think who the fuck negotiated all these deals in the summer, you donkey??
Anyway, the next two months is a steady up and down. From a loss at home to Chievo we go to a ridiculous win in Milan. We drop out of the Coppa Italia losing 1-0 to inter. We then go on to dispatch Bologna 3-0 in a fabulous display only to get smacked 4-0 by previously second-to-last Atalanta a week later. At the end of the year we're in the midst of a close midfield on 6th place.

This success has attracted foreign attention. Not so much for the players, but for me. Granada, West Brom and Leicester, all threatened by relegation, offer job interviews. However as an Italian, I'm not the leading candidate for any of these posts. And indeed they all decide for other options. Still, I'm thinking a lot about my future, since the long-term perspectives at Spezia are obviously limited. If I get a good offer I'll probably take it.
January arrives and we're still in terrific shape, beating Cittadella and Empoli 1-0. Then we go on and troll Sampdoria a second time, winning away 0-1 with a penalty. Their frustration is expressed in one stat - 17-2 fouls with a sending off. However, this glorious match shall turn out to be my last one as Spezia manager. Yes, we're sitting 4th sensationally, but it's not gonna last. Our squad is barely held together by loan players and will implode in the summer, of that I'm pretty certain. After a failed interview at Espanyol, I then have a concrete offer from France. It would double my salary, so already for this I would be a moron declining it. I would take over a traditional club currently on 13th place with the goal to make it to the top 10 and stop the downwards trend of the last few years. After some deliberation, I decide to chicken out move to France.
