    Managing in really small leagues

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 02:09 PM PST

What fun do people get out of playing in the totally random or obscure leagues where even in top flight they're semi pro. Like Welsh Premier. Yes they can get European places. But surely after you win the league a few times that's it. You ain't going to be able compete in Europe without the wages or attract the big players.

I am not knocking people who like it I just want to know what they like about it so maybe I can try it. As it stands I have no interest in this specific save game format.

My First (Technically Second) FM Save. [Part 1]

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 04:18 PM PST

I don't know if anyone will read this but I just really have been enjoying the game and the community around it and felt I needed a place to ramble about my save. So here I am.

    S1 Rangers

I thought I'd start off with Rangers, as they are my local team. Everyone knows for quite a while now the Scottish premiership has been a one horse race, with Celtic leading the way. It has been slightly more competitive since Rangers have came back up since liquidation, but still, Celtic lead the way. I wanted to change that, with Celtic aiming for 9 league titles in a row this season, I wanted to make a good challenge for that title, and if not that season, definitely stop them next season from 10 in a row.

    Summer Signings

I signed Max Kilman from Wolves and started training him as a back up left back to barasic, I heard determination was important for stuff like that and he developed really well through the season. I also signed Sean Clare from Hearts, I rate him irl and got him for very cheap. He was also a worthwhile signing, beginning the season as backup to Arfield & Davis in the AM Postion (I used 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress) but I found he had a better connection with Morelos so he played the latter half of the season as my main AM. I was unable to make any other noteworthy signings in the summer which made me a bit anxious heading into the season.

    Starting The Season

I was I also unable to qualify for the europa league, which really made me begin to doubt myself because surely I couldn't do any worse than Rangers irl. The positive of this was I could focus all of my attention on winning the league whilst Celtic had more to deal with. I'm not going to go through all the ins and outs, but the league was fairly smooth, winning all the matches I should be, with the occasional draw against, say, hibs. I won the first two old firm matches which put me in first position, the rest of the season was in my hands. This started quite the rivalry between myself and Lennon, who never had a nice word to say about each other in the press.

    January Signings

I made one signing in January, a backup striker by the name of Mohamed Daramy. I had my eye on him all throughout the summer, even making a bid, but the money they were suggesting didn't seem very reasonable considering all things. I left it until January, and by that time a lot of teams like Chelsea and PSG had their eye on him. I'm pretty sure I watched a video where someone said if they are getting attention from all the big clubs too, you should probably pay more attention. So I did, probably paying too much, but oh well, I got a good backup striker to replace Defoe who I felt was pretty useless.

    Second Half Of The Season

We kicked it off right, defeating Celtic in the league cup final. It was nice to get a bit of silverware in the cabinet. Soon after though, due to the nature of the Scottish Prem, we faced again. This time, I lost to Celtic, this, I think, (going off memory) was my first lost in the league and put us on a level playing field. I really didn't want to slip up. I continued on, with none of the other teams really being a threat.

    The Split

Then the split happened. If you aren't aware, the split in Scottish football is when, at the end of the season, the top 6 teams break off into a group, as well as the bottom 6 and face each other all once more. Heading into the split, myself and Celtic were level on points and goal difference, but then, out of the blue, Neil Lennon left Celtic in order to manage Leicester who had just sacked former Celtic boss, Brendan Rogers. Celtic brought in a manager from, Dinamo Zagreb or something I believe. But it wasn't the same, we were able to fight through the remaining games as Celtic just barley slipped up allowing us to clinch the league title.

    Champions!

It was the end of the first season. I had won the league cup and the Ladbrokes Premiership for the first time in a long time for Rangers. I think in retrospect I was extremely fortunate to have no horrible injuries, my key players were all instrumental - Goldson, Tav, Barasic, Aribo, Kamara, Kent, Ojo & Morelos all especially incredible. I am currently in February in the next season, and, well, a lot has changed lol. I will get to that in my next post. I am still an idiot when it comes to the game, only now getting used to the basic functions of the game, there are still parts I have no idea what I'm doing and just delegate to the assistant, but it's all part of learning! I think the last time I was this in love with a game was cities skylines, both had me lost in time playing the game for hours on hours. so so good.

Efe Ambrose - The (lib)hero we need (Part II - Mid-season update)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 12:08 PM PST

I've reached the middle of the season in the quest to turn Efe Ambrose into an epic libero (or, at least, to see if he can make a decent one). I was initially planning for an end-of-season update only, but opted for a mid-season one as well. Here's what's been going on as I try to turn Efe into Condeixa's backbone!

    Condeixa 3 - Mosteirense 0

Efe was everywhere in this game, leading the team in passing attempts, with 77 - he passed the ball around more than our playmaker! He also managed an 87% success ratio on the passes, which is nothing short of impressive. All that without compromising his defensive work. His 8.4 ratio and a spot on the "Team of the Week" were well deserved!

    Benfica CB 1 - Condeixa 1

    Loures 1 - Condeixa 4

Unfortunately, Ambrose's exhibitions didn't remain consistent. In the following two matches, his passing was abysmal, with 66% and 69% success ratios (the lowest so far).

He's partially to blame in Benfica CB's goal, as he let their player coast past him in the middle, but he could do nothing in the goal scored by Loures. They had one of my former players, so he was always going to come back and bite the hand that used to feed him. Nothing Efe could do about it.

    Condeixa 4 - Leixões 2

A cup match against a team from the division above. Ambrose had a somewhat average game, reaching only a 7.1 rating. He marginally improved his passing accuracy, reaching 72% in 51 attempts - which included the pass that began the play resulting in our second goal, when he found João Oliveira, our right wingback, completely open.

He was somewhat poor when it comes to passing, but a monster in defense: 5 interceptions and 11 successful headers! This wasn't his best match, but he still played a strong role in helping us knock a stronger team out of the cup!

    Condeixa 3 - Leiria 0

Leiria was the only team above us in the league, having won all their matches so far. This match was supposed to be tough, but we've managed to completely shut them down: they weren't able to get a single shot on goal!

Part of the reason for our defensive success was Efe, and his 8.6 rating reflects that. Leading the charts in both interceptions and successful headers, he ensured Leiria couldn't do much. He also managed to launch the counter that resulted in our 3rd goal, adding another assist to his tally!

His passing is slowly improving once again, managing to get 78% of his 66 attempts. Curiously enough, his two colleagues in the defense were the real heroes in this game when it comes to passing. Gonçalo Inácio managed to succeed in 94% of his 78 attempts. Tommie Hoban was even more impressive: 96% in 79 attempts. It looks like they're challenging you, Efe!

His exhibition was rewarded with a position in the "Team of the Week"!

    Condeixa 2 - Tondela 0

Another cup match, this time against a team that's two leagues above. Nobody gave us a chance, but... we have Efe!

He finished the match with 96 (96!!!) pass attempts, with an 88% success ratio! That's nothing short of amazing! He wasn't as involved as usual when it came to defending, but still managed to get one interception and 5 successful headers.

His exhibition probably had something to do with adding the "Play out of defense" instruction. It's something I'll keep for a few more games, to see how it goes.

    ARC Oleiros 0 - Condeixa 1

    Condeixa 4 - Torrense 0

    Oriental 1 - Condeixa 1

    Condeixa 6 - Caldas 2

    Condeixa 4 - Felgueiras 0 (Cup Match)

    Sertanense 0 - Condeixa 2

Ambrose seems to be getting the hang of this passing thing. He managed to stay within the 81% to 88% success ratio in these matches, varying between 40 and 69 pass attempts. He has also kept a strong defensive work, consistently getting interceptions and winning headers.

Efe got his first goals this season, scoring twice against Caldas (one from the penalty spot and the other in a lucky rebound during a corner). It was also his highest rating so far: 9.3 (and his 3rd "Team of the Week" entry).

    Condeixa 5 - Atlético CP 1

Efe did 41 passing attempts, and achieved an incredible 97% accuracy in his passing in this game. He also got in the scoresheet, from the penalty spot!

    Peniche 1 - Condeixa 4

We were playing the last placed, and allowed'em to surprise us. They were up 1-0 by halftime. And then Efe showed all his determination by shooting until he scored, marking the start of our comeback! What a guy!

    Condeixa 7 - Alcains 1

Efe only played the first half, as I wanted to rest him for the cup match against Braga (and we've been having a packed schedule). Playing one half was still enough to get him another entry in the "Team of the Week". He did about half his usual passes, but retained an accuracy in the 80s.

I tried Tommie Hoban in his place and actually liked the results. It seems he might make things difficult for Efe... playing a single half as libero was enough to get an assist.

    Condeixa 2 - Braga 5

I had high hopes for this game, even though Braga is two leagues above us. Sadly, this turned out to be our first defeat this season. We did put up a fight every now and then, but Braga was always in control.

Efe didn't really get into the match. He only managed 21 passes, before I subbed him off in the 81st minute. A single interception and just 3 successful headers pretty much explain his poor 6.4 rating in this match. Hopefully, this was just a one-off.

    Alcochetense 1 - Condeixa 2

Good game for Ambrose. Scored a goal in a corner, managed 9 interceptions and a staggering total of 16 successful headers. He got his first "Man of the Match" award and it was entirely deserved!

    So, how's it going?

Efe showed some problems in two or three matches but, other than that, this was a good run. He's really tying the defense together and his passing accuracy is showing consistency. He oftens brings the wingbacks into play with wide passes, resulting in dangerous crosses. His height is definitely an asset, as he keeps clearing header after header in the midfield.

I'm somewhat disappointed at the lack of forward runs and shots on target, though. He does dribble and shoot sometimes, but I was expecting more.

    Efe Ambrose 2.0

He's doing such a good job that I'm already considering making this my standard tactic, which means looking for a possible replacement as he's already 32 - and have Efe as a mentor to Efe 2.0. Finding the correct player is proving to be rather difficult... getting a good and tall centreback with decent dribbling and passing, along with high flair, seems to be a tough mission.
