Previously, on "I turned Millwall into the most aggressive team in the world"

Our form over the first half of the season has been exceptional, leaving us sitting just outside the automatic promotion positions. And I haven't had to compromise on my philosophy to achieve this – we top the table for all our key performance indicators – fouls, yellow cards, and red cards. Can we keep up the fouls and keep up the pressure at the top?

    The Return of Proper Football

The world rejoices. Not because France win the Qatar World Cup, beating Germany 2-0 in the final, but because league football is back. Millwall are back. Let the fouls begin.

There are three games before the January transfer window, all in different competitions. Our last league game was the dismal 4-0 loss to Swansea, and getting back to winning ways against Sheffield Wednesday is paramount. It isn't to be – Budget Xhaka finally gets the red he was destined to get, dismissed for a second booking just before half time, and we sink to a 3-1 defeat in the second half.

Next up sees the friendly Galatasaray ultras visit London for Felipe Melo's testimonial. I'm delighted to see the fight fixture will be broadcast on TV (presumably after the watershed), and pick a relatively strong side irrespective of our other games. James McClean opens the scoring in an entertaining 4-2 defeat, and we commit a healthy 27 fouls. Fittingly, Melo manages to get himself one last booking before hanging up his boots for good.

    https://preview.redd.it/3piti2xpv7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf1fa362391246ed3eefbd51a2d7010f7b989750

    https://preview.redd.it/bj7fonprv7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=784fb06ffbe08a77cbfc893bc15151cb00ee87c3

Our third fixture back is an FA Cup game against Crystal Palace, and yet again we crash out of the competition immediately. In my defence, we've had difficult draws every year, and this year we have more important targets in mind. I can't fault my players' effort though – 28 fouls, seven bookings, and another red card for Travis' collection.

    Reinforcements Have Arrived

The transfer window starts with a bang – on the very first day I bring in Leicester legend Jamie Vardy. He will be 36-years-old in a week or so, and his wages threaten to ruin us financially, but he brings a Championship-winning mentality to the club that I hope can make the difference by the end of the season.

    https://preview.redd.it/sv60swgwv7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db9a60291d200be00f7ea300268ae222f0513cc3

Despite the raft of retirements the squad is still excessive. Most of the veterans have little to no resale value, so to help get the financials back on track I instead sell two of our more promising youngsters – John Ford and George Alexander. Neither had quite developed as expected, and to get £600k for them, plus future transfer fees, made sense in the end.

And that was that. Until we're hit with a swift one-two. Xhaka suffers a slipped disc and will be out for nearly two months. And then…

    https://preview.redd.it/gl3ih59yv7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532b063e9e047b97e12162192a2bfc2f4e9516b6

I'm gutted. Our talisman, the embodiment of Millwall football, is out for the season, and is considering retirement altogether as a result. I promise him there's space in the team for when he's back. He still has the ability to hack at opponent's ankles, and it would be a loss to the game if he were to call it quits now…

More immediately, we're two midfielders down. And Travis is suspended again. I have a bid accepted for another Leicester player – Hamza Choudhury – but he seems to think we're owned by a Gulf state and asks for an absurd £80k a week.

    https://preview.redd.it/ozjb9mu1w7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aea7d00fbb5eb13d37e7ecba40c980981cadb94b

Other key targets are approaching the end of their contracts, but various factors scupper any deals, not least the fact that the likes of Sergio Ramos don't actually want to play for Millwall.

With time running out, we're handed a lifeline in the form of Mo Besic, who joins on loan until the end of the season.

    https://preview.redd.it/jh4mv5k5w7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da94a9fdfbc645370921db8642f2a72e1f7537f2

I'd have stopped there, but news reaches me that Ben Pearson, the Ben Pearson, has been transfer listed by West Brom! There's just one stumbling block – we're out of funds. The only way to do the deal is to sell someone first. There's little to choose from, and in the end I opt to sell our top scorer Ivan Toney, due to a combination of him still complaining about his contract after over a year, and the fact that he actually has some market value.

Not only do the board complain that I'm not signing young players for the future, the departure of Toney leaves us with no strikers under 32-years-old. I don't regret a thing – re-signing Pearson was always the first priority. I just have to hope that Barnes and Vardy still have goals in them.

    https://preview.redd.it/il24bih8w7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b13bdccc2271e87b1ed2e70f4e16087f0ca3520

    Players In Players Out
Jamie Vardy £325k John Ford £350k
Mo Besic Loan £70k p/m George Alexander £275k
Ben Pearson £2.6m Ivan Toney £4.5m

    The Yellow Card Drought

We continue to struggle – the cup exit is followed by two more defeats – before finally getting some points with a goalless draw against Burnley and another scrappy win over Leeds. Somehow, we remain in playoff contention, as most of the teams around us also drop points over the busy winter period.

On the cards front, the players are in fine form. After 26 games we're still on course for a record 188 bookings, with the side picking up at least four cards in the vast majority of matches. In a nine-game stretch the yellows tally reads 5-5-4-5-4-3-5-4-4 – it's relentless.

But just as we find some wins, the cards dry up. I have no explanation – the fouls are still there, but the referees have become far more lenient. There's clearly an FA conspiracy to stop us breaking the 200 cards barrier… A solid 33 fouls against Fulham lead to only a single booking, and this is followed by a pitiful two yellows in total across consecutive wins over Charlton and Derby.

    https://preview.redd.it/n4dx3bovw7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=449a583195210cf56fb9b16a3690340d11d75376

Weirdly, my attempts to get the team picking up yellows again yield more extreme results. Travis sees red yet again, this time for a dangerous challenge against Stoke, and is immediately suspended for the next four games. I'm glad I brought in extra midfielders for cover.

    https://preview.redd.it/bf78h1l0x7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1ef962252b6ffa4a2dbf3d6d7ec8d13b3f95ad4

Barnes then gets a three-match ban for elbowing Sheffield Wednesday's Massimo Luongo in the face despite us leading 4-0. I'd been shouting for the team to show some passion as we had zero bookings, and he took my words to heart. I appeal the ban on grounds of diminished responsibility, but this is ignored.

    Chat Shit, Get Dropped

Jamie Vardy, meanwhile, is turning out to be another Andy Carroll. After taking six games to score his first goals, and doing little since, he then complains that I haven't fined Barnes for his red card! I try and send him on an intensive language course, as he seems unable to read our famous code of conduct, but sadly this is not an option.

His unhappiness threatens to spread to other players, but thankfully very few seem to care. In fact, I'm heartened to see most of the squad take my side in the argument – the likes of Joe Rafferty (six yellows and one red), and Ben Thompson (16 yellows) agreeing that club discipline is not an issue.

    https://preview.redd.it/zr269cr6x7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52abed48805efd0ac6ab100281a5e97c2524a1a4

    Ambassadors of Aggression

In terms of my attempts to help Portuguese minnows Canelas 2010 gain promotion from the Portuguese third division, things are looking positive. Bolstered by seven players from my reserves squads, the team's form is good. Unfortunately Henry Woods, one of the better players despatched to the Canelas Front, rejects their offer of a loan extension and returns to London. He does go out in style though, getting sent off in his final game.

    https://preview.redd.it/96ddlh7fx7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c1d7f90fa7ac13a2e52ef41cdc1f7d47f4301fd

Our two ex-first team loanees are faring less well. Sonny Bradley is barely playing, and Richie Smallwood has been unable to recreate the magic that saw him sent off four times for Bristol Rovers last season. I recall him, with the intention of sending him somewhere else, but after he rejects a move to Canelas the only team willing to take him are Bristol Rovers again… He returns there on loan, hopefully the red cards will come soon.

    Finances

At all my previous clubs, from Melilla to Gorodeya to Juventus to Cape Town City, I've been a stingy bastard, treating club funds as if they were my own. No-one gets yearly pay rises, no-one earns way more than anyone else. Contract rebels are sold and replaced with cheap labour.

This project, however, hasn't worked out quite as well. True shithouses are like works of art – rare, and irreplaceable. If you want Ashley Barnes, you have to pay to get Ashley Barnes. Accept no imitations. Except Xhaka.

Under my stewardship Millwall's wage expenditure has more than doubled. Player sales (particularly the fees received for Edmondson and Mahoney) have just about helped keep the club's finances on track, but in March the balance finally goes into the red for the first time… The Premier League riches are looking more and more important every day.

    https://preview.redd.it/des5ae5jx7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4e1bd75311841b33b8a28542d8fa28ea4a34eca

The Sad Event that (Hopefully) Inspires this Ragtag Bunch to go on to Greatness like in all the American Sports Films

A nil-nil draw to struggling Rotherham, in which we again fail to pick up a single card, sees us fall outside the playoff places. Making things even worse, Cattermole then announces his retirement from playing. It was half-expected, but still gutting. I try and talk him out of it, but his mind is made up.

    https://preview.redd.it/g08zrq6ux7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df3c3612f1a28e73d8f09eb14e7f324ec52974c8

The team walk out for our next game wearing Cattermole #7 shirts in honour of one of the finest shithouses of our era. And we put on possibly the best performance of my time in charge, battering Norwich (quite literally) from start to finish. Eight players end up in the book, and we create chance after chance, hitting the woodwork twice. Somehow we don't score. And we're punished – conceding from an indirect free kick late on, and falling to an undeserved defeat.

    https://preview.redd.it/of0djw5yx7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eefde36bda84f3977f937e673f11e92418a95ab8

The Norwich result sees us drop to eighth. But the team show great bouncebackability, with two wins and two draws from the next four games. More importantly, the cards have returned! Two more FA fines are added to our collection, with a fantastic eight yellows and a red in a draw with Middlesbrough – Shane Ferguson rolling back the years with his first dismissal in over a year.

    https://preview.redd.it/8w1e30c3y7l41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d31078c98e46244662dc9b9fa367b8f6d216b41d

    As It Stands

Cards-wise, we're on 147 yellows and nine reds – only slightly off the pace required to equal our 172 bookings record. The card drought has had its effect though – had we kept up the pace I'm sure we could've broken the mythical 200 yellows count…

Any chance at automatic promotion has long gone, but the recent upturn in form moves us back into the playoff positions. It's a tight league, even by Championship standards. After 40 games we're in sixth place, but only three points ahead of Reading in eleventh. With six games remaining, we need to dig in. This does not fucking slip now.

Hexagon Challenge : Part Two. From the Middle East to the Far East

Precedently in Hexagon Challenge, we conquered Oceania and then stuck around for a bit

Today, we are challenging the legacy of Gengis Khan and trying to conquer Asia.

After leaving AS Dragon, I start looking for an interesting job in either Asia or Africa, depending on what my reputation will allow me to land. I also apply to Real Madrid who just fired their manager but get laughed off. Apparently, they're not impressed by my 2 Oceanian Champions Leagues. We'll make sure to avenge that later. In 15 years or so.

I apply to a few clubs, get some interviews and finally get the job at Shabab Ordon, in the Jordanian first division.

    https://preview.redd.it/8hpvggadedl41.png?width=361&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c43308c1eb49a6177bd1be47a01d65c91ae9fb0

I'm lucky and find myself in a very good situation. Shabab Ordon is a small club in a country dominated by Wehdat and Faisaly (respectively 35 and 20 titles when I sign) but in a good shape. They won the title 2 years ago in 2023, and if they were searching for a new manager, it is because the old one had retire and not because of bad results. Indeed, the club has been on the podium for the past 6 seasons. The roster is pretty good given the restrictions (we are only allowed 3 non-Jordanians, and they cannot be GKs). And the Jordanian league qualifies for the Champions League ! I'm not delusional enough to think I can win it there in less than a decade or so, but it will allow me to test out the waters a bit.

    Season 1 - 2025/2026

My first order of business is bringing with me my friend Ramy Mohsen, the egyptian CB. We sign him for a little over 100k and a friendly against AS Dragon (in which we will hammer them 5-1). He was great in Tahiti, and he's great in Jordan too, he is well worth a foreign slot.

    https://preview.redd.it/e3rq4mesfdl41.png?width=1390&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2ebaa7904cf0cf584ef7887e8ce30b3ce5e65df

I also bring him the belgian winger Maxime Lestienne who was listed for a loan from his qatari club, on loan with mandatory fee. That'll turn out to be a big mistake from me, I have let my feelings speak on this one (I loved him at PSV). His physicals are way too low to be productive and his salary is more than 3x than anyone else on the team. I'm let off the hook when he announces his retirement at the end of the season. We won't even have to pay the fee !

I also find out that the team is in the West Final of the Asian Confederation Cup (equivalent to the Europa League). It takes me some time to figure this out due to the complete clusterfuck this competition is, but the West Final are in fact the semi-finals of the competition (or one of them rather). We beat a Bahraini club, and then a North Korean club in the Finale. Champions of Asia ! Kinda. But we want the Champions League, not the Asian Mickey Mouse Cup.

I put the same possession based game as in Tahiti, and the roster is good enough to make it work. We win the league in the first season, and qualify for the Champions League (2 qualified teams in Jordan, the winner of the league and the winner of the Cup). This is not a very spectacular league, there is few goals and most victories are only by one goal. We finsh as the second attack with 39 goals in 22 games.

    Jordanian Premier League - 2025/2026

    Season 2 - 2026/2027

In the summer, I have an important decision to make, as the emirati club Al-Ain offers me an interview. Do I want to see what I can do with Shabab Ordon in the CL or do I want to try and fast track the process ? I decide that the opportunity is too good to pass up and take the interview. They will end up chosing someone else. Their loss. We'll stay at Ordon then.

We improve the roster a bit, with the main objective of scoring more goals. We don't, but we still win the league.

    Jordanian Premier League - 2026/2027

The interesting stuff only starts in the second part of the season with the Champions League (since my league and the CL are not on the same calendar).

And look who we get drawn with in the group phase ! Al-Ain ! Interesting ... We also have a club from Uzbekistan and Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia. We fare better than I expected, losing twice to Al-Hilal without getting demolished, and splitting the games against the uzbeks. But, and THAT was nice, we beat Al-Ain 2-0 twice. You picked the wrong guy motherfuckers. In the second round we play Al-Sadd from Qatar, the step is too high for us and we get beat 2-0.

I realize then that the gap between Jordanians and the others is too big and would need years and years of grooming to be filled. I decide that I need to leave for a bigger stage, I feel ready for the next part of my career. I have established myself in Asia a bit and my reputation is good enough to land a job in one of the big leagues (basically Korea, China, Qatar, Iran or Saudi Arabia).

I start actively looking for an interesting job in the summer and in september, I sign with Henan Jianye of China.

    https://preview.redd.it/pzl0187fldl41.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc5dd350af5b0f4df94c215817f3a0ffda1d60f7

Jianye is basically nothing on the Chinese scene. At the moment of my arrival, they came up to the first division 2 years ago, massively overperformed in their first season finishing second mainly because of Joshua Zirkzee. They then promptly sold Zirkzee and found themselves in the middle of the pack, firing their coach a few weeks before the end of the 2027 season. That's when I arrive.

Beijing with Bruno Génésio at the helm has won the past 5 titles. Jianye has of course never won a single one. We'll try to stop those 2 streaks and then go on and bring continental glory to rural China.

And let's be honest, we have work to do. The roster is utter shite, no idea how they managed to get to the 2nd place a year prior. I use the final games of the season to assess the situation, we lose more or less all of our games and finish in 9th.

    Season 3 - 2028

Oh boy do we have work to do. As I said, this squad is SHIT. Everything needs to change. And the board agrees, because I have a transfer budget of over 130M€. As in Jordan, we have restrictions. Here, we are allowed 4 foreigners but only 3 on the field at any time. And still no goalkeeper. I decide to splash a huge part of my money on a brazilian wonderkid from Arsenal. We spend 63M on him, with bonus amounting to 112M in total. He'll be the center of our play from his left wing.

    https://preview.redd.it/jqf8kmzumdl41.png?width=1410&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a9ef7a548e0233e55f9fdf51b4aaeff0b47dbd1

We spend just about another 50M on 21 other players. Yes, 21. We installed revolving doors at the training ground so it would be easier for everyone that summer. The squad needed a full overhaul and goddamit it got it. The main difficulty is chosing on what position I want to have foreigners (so my better players), for this I settle on both wingers and a central midfielder. I'm not sure it is the best way though, as it is very difficult to find good chinese defenders.

Among those players, of course, is Ramy Mohsen, who we bought win a loan back to Shabab Ordon for 18 months. China might be a step too high for him, as he's deemed pretty shit by my scouts. Definitely not worth a foreigner slot.

    https://preview.redd.it/qfnfl1c6ndl41.png?width=1410&format=png&auto=webp&s=1db262bd0cce87dc0a0f8958aa2e08eabaac9303

On the tactical side, I try to install the same possession game as in Tahiti and Jordan. I'm still not sure how it happened but it gradually became a lethal counter-attacking game. This is not at all what I wanted to do and what I like to do but it works I guess. Counter-attacks it is then. And I must admit, it works pretty well !

I'm pretty optimistic that we'll get a spot in the Champions League (top 3 or winning the Cup). My board not so much, as they ask me to finish mid-table.

Our spending spree has put us in dire situation regarding the Financial Fair-Play but we get a new mysterious short-term sponsor giving us just enough money to pass the FFP ! How lucky ! I have no idea what the sanctions could have been though.

On the field, everything is going perfectly. Carlos Alexandre is performing as good as we hoped (18 goals and 9 assists), and everything is clicking well. So well in fact that we win the league, finishing with 22 more points than the precedent year !

    Chinese Super League - 2028

We almost sweep the end of season awards, Carlos Alexandre winning Best Player and a young midfielder we bought from Beijing winning both Best Chinese Player and Best Young Player. I myself win Best Manager. Our striker also finishes as the best Chinese scorer.

    https://preview.redd.it/dqfjerm0rdl41.png?width=1410&format=png&auto=webp&s=a3e304d83af172e0caa4009bf95439f8b0922fbe

Bruno Génésio is sacked by Beijing, I consider the first part of our mission as accomplished.

Before the beginning of the nest season, Ulsan offers us an interview. It's interesting, as they were in the Champions League Finale only 2 years ago, but I decide not to go for it, as I'm happy with my team here.

    Season 4 - 2029

With the success of last season, we don't need to do a lot of work during this transfer window. I chose to improve the defense how I can, but chinese players are pretty limited. I find a good left back, and am able to improve the CBs a bit. I also bring in a new Chinese striker, who I hope will be more clinical.

I almost soil myself when the board accepts an offer for aforementionned Yang Kui without consulting me because it is "too good to refuse". 32M too good to refuse ? Are you kidding me ? Thankfully, he chose to stay with us. Smart kid, I tell ya.

We start the season fantastically well, scoring more and more goals while having less and less possession. And while everyone else in the league is beating each other, we're running with it and already have more than 10pts on the second at the half of the season. There will never be any suspense, and we'll smash our points record and win the second title in Henan Jianye's history.

    Chinese Super League - 2029

In the Champions League, we get a pretty easy group (Australians, Japanese and Koreans) that we top without breaking much of a sweat, winning 4 games, drawing one and losing one where we sent the backups because 1st place was already ensured.

More Australians in the Second round. We hammer them 4-1 in Sydney and after a boring second leg we go through. Koreans in the quarters, same story : a 2-0 away in the first leg, a boring second one and we're through. Then for the semis, we get a familiar face because we get drawn against a Chinese team. At the moment of the game, they're sitting at 10th in the league. If you know FM, you know how that looks ... And exactly as expected, we dominate the first leg but fall 1-0 to a second half pen. Thankfully, we play much better in the second leg and are able to win 3-0 to go through. In the other semi-finals, an Iranian duel took place and there is an upset ! After winning the last 3 Champions League, Esteghlal falls to compatriots Persepolis in a derby of Tehran.

Meanwhile, we've also qualified for the Cup Finale, and the schedule will not be kind to us

The first leg starts perfectly, and we go up 2-0 after less than 30 minutes. We will somewhat lose our composure, which is uncharacteristic, and they are able to equalize 2-2 before half time ! And things go from bad to worse in the second half when our best midfielder gets a yellow card that will keep him out of the second leg and another gets a straight red. Thankfully, we don't concede another goal and get back from Iran with a 2-2 draw.

The backups can not do better than a 0-1 loss in the first leg of the Cup Final

The second leg was a masterclass of butt clenching on my part. Unsure what to do with my midfield, I elect to play without a DM and have 3 CBs instead. It works quite well because they do not get a lot of shots, but it appears just about all of them are dangerous. On our end, we do not produce much. Relief will come after the 75' mark from a corner headed in by Yang Kui. We hang on, win the game 1-0 and that's it ! WE WON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE !

What I imagine to be a pretty hangover squad gets a 3-3 draw in the second leg of the Cup Finale. Entertaining game but not enough to complete the treble. I can't say that I care.

On my first participation with Jianye, I must say this was pretty unexpected but we had a shitload of money and used it pretty well. We won them their 2 first ever league titles, their first ever Continental title, and made them the Chinese club with the biggest reputation, overtaking Beijing. That was a short but efficient stint.

I can now leave Asia and never look back. I will set my sights onto Africa. After 4 years in Asia, 4 league titles in 2 different countries as well as 2 continental cups (even though I don't really feel like I've won the Confederations Cup since I only played 3 games), I've left my mark.

See you soon for my African adventures !
