Story time: An FM save that is neither a failure or a triumph.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 04:16 PM PST

    Hear me out.

Having struggled to get into FM20, i start a West Ham save. I play a fancy new wing play tactic in an effort to change it up (I never do gegenpress as i think its game breaking.) My first mistake is spending my remaining budget on two attacking players: viktor Fischer and Jarrod bowen. I should've strengthened the defence, but all I did was bring in Rojo on loan. Life goes terribly. We are 17th at XMas. I revert to my tactic that I found worked best in fm19, high tempo high press hoofball. Just as I sense an upturn... I'm sacked.

I think: surely a mid table foreign team like Levante or someone will take me. But my agent is recommending jobs like Northampton town... and after 4 months, as I'm about to sign for L1 strugglers Rochdale... Werder Bremen offer me an interview. I go, of course, and say anything to get the job. I do. I have the summer to make budget signings after I win the relegation playoff, which I do en masse, bringing in Alan Francon, Plattenhardt, Rasmus Falk, rebuilding the team. On deadline day, I sign Mason Greenwood. He scores 23 goals that season. We have an amazing early season using my FM19 tactic, but totally bottle it and scrape 7th, and an EL2 place.

I'm juggling the EL2 and Bundesliga, and with a month to go in the 21/22 season I'm in the semi final of the EL2 and 11th in the league. But the board call me into a meeting, and demand that I drop a player or get sacked. I agree but a month later am sacked.

The sacking has nullified any reputation bonus I've had from my good season. I'm searching for a job before the summer but find none. The season starts early and midtable Championship Stoke have a vacancy at the very top. They want me to get playoffs. I take over, and spend their budget on brilliant young regens. Using my tactic and Mohamed Daramy's 26 goals, we shoot up the table and are 3 points off 2nd in April. But our meteoric rise stops. We just manage to keep pace after a few losses though, and a win vs a midtable Derby will see us promoted. But it isnt to be. We go into the playoff semi finals vs Brentford, and lose. I'm prepared to go again but the board call me into a meeting to discuss my future due to poor performance. In a moment of rage, I resign.

Next season, same story. I take over a relegation zone championship Crystal Palace team, but they have £50M to spend as they've offloaded their best players. I spend it before January on hoovering the best championship talent, Geubbles from Forest and Bednarek from Southampton. And a PSG regen for £26M... but the rise stops. The defence is just too leaky and the forwards don't settle. We draw every game 4-4, and finish 12th. At the end of the season, I try and try to keep my job. No luck.

Funnily enough, it's the same story again next season. But it's a downgrade. A relegation zone Nottingham Forest team is the worst I've ever managed in my career. They have very little money to spend so I spend most of it on buying some needed creativity. But towards the end of January, I realize Benfica are my affiliate... I loan 4 players from them for free, all 4.5 stars. We begin to put together a convincing run of form (Beating Derby 3-0 away). But as the PL Hull job is vacant and I am linked, i apply... and am sacked. Oops. Hull give me an interview. But nothing else.

I'm at a low point now. My reputation is low, and it seems I'm going to do another summer unemployed. My applications for other championship teams are laughed off. I finally resolve to go for Havre AC, a French 2nd tier team who might challenge for promotion. It's a wage budget of 360,000, the lowest I will have had in the save. I'm not happy about it. But as they approach me, I delay. I'm still hoping for something else. And then I delay again, for the same reason. But as they approach me for the final time, my agent recommends the newly promoted to the PL Wolves job. I ditch Havre, apply and declare interest, and get the interview... and then I get the job!

I'm a PL manager again, after 6 years! This wolves team is bust and a shambles. The squad is tiny and old, and my transfer budget is £2M. Room to manoeuvre on the wages though. It's got some good young talent though, and I'm keen to finally settle down, and build a project.

Is this going to be same as? Mediocre league results, an early domestic cup exit, a transfer splurge on underperforming players... or can I turn a leaf. Keep this team up? Build a project. Finally take the next step having gone backwards for years?

    To be continued

Nothing like signing a top retiring player to your small danish team. It's Vardy's team now.

I think my board may be running some scams. According to them, this was a sold out match.

I think my club might be too good for this league... (the draw ended a 49 win streak). Haven't lost a league game for about 4 years.
