I turned Millwall into the most aggressive team in the world - Part V

Previously, on "I turned Millwall into the most aggressive team in the world"

We reach the half-way point in my second Millwall season. So far this season hasn't gone entirely to plan. Cards and fouls are up on this point last year, but results have been poor. After surviving a board ultimatum can these Millwall bastards kick on towards playoff glory?

    "Announce Messi"

Despite no doubt harbouring vague hopes of us signing some exciting young flair players, the Millwall fans are in for a disappointing transfer window.

It has not escaped my attention that Luton Town have amassed a fantastic seven red cards in 23 games. Centre half Matty Pearson is responsible for two of them, but has already agreed to join Lee Bowyer's Charlton, Bowyer showing the exact kind of mentality that had already seen me try and recruit him as my assistant last year. Full back Joe Rafferty is also on two reds, but has only recently joined from Preston and won't leave. I vow to reunite him with Ben Pearson in the summer.

With Blackburn refusing to sell defensive midfielder Lee Travis, major signings will have to wait. Instead, I sign 35-year-old centre back Paul McShane and 31-year-old winger James McClean. The fans think they're not good enough. To be fair to them, I have no intention of actually playing McShane – he's instead immediately set up in a mentoring group to teach my youngsters the dark arts of football.

    https://preview.redd.it/f0rmd7cskz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29d67143dc790787f1ce96552990e5fe6ab25883

We also do one more deal. And this is the one that signals our intentions the most. The legendary Lee Cattermole is out of contract in six months, and this time our approach is successful. He won't join until the summer, but the wait will soon be over. Our messiah is joining us at last!

    Squad Overview

With our transfers done for another year, it seems as good a time as any to see what I've created. In line with my philosophy I have assembled the most aggressive, brave, and determined team in the Championship by some distance. We're also amongst the league leaders at heading and tackling.

    https://preview.redd.it/eew0cayvkz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa306622f8e9b392e55d8e374b206a5e21305000

    https://preview.redd.it/i1slobexkz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7934fb3162489b2276edf416e0a048d248e42a71

    https://preview.redd.it/g5b8d74ykz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4f64c40b57fa431dc4eb5132c94739f75943abe

Unfortunately, we're extremely limited everywhere else – we're one of the slowest, least agile teams, with the worst crossing, dribbling, flair, first touch, off the ball movement, passing, and technique attributes in the league. Basically, we have no footballing ability, but we do have grit and graft. Tony Pulis eat your heart out. Whether this will actually win us games, only time will tell.

    Fines, Fines, and more Fines

Our form immediately after the board announce that my job (for the time being) is safe is decent – we win four and draw three of the next nine games. The draws are a little annoying, as if we're to have any chance at the playoffs we need to be turning these into wins, but it's an improvement on our early season results at least.

More importantly, our card count is exceptional. In those nine fixtures we pick up 38 yellow cards and receive four disciplinary fines, equalling last year's tally with 14 games still to play. Against QPR, the pick of the games, Jason McCarthy sees red before half time but we hang on for a draw, receiving eight bookings on the way.

James McClean, anticipated to be a veteran squad player in a squad full of veteran squad players, immediately stakes a claim for regular first team football. He's booked five minutes into his debut, an away win against newly-relegated Sheffield United, and scores the only goal of the game in our next match, against Sheffield Wednesday. Evidently he has something against Sheffield, as his form dips after this, but his card count remains solid.

Not everyone is thrilled with our style of play. Eddie Howe, not surprisingly, thinks football shouldn't be played this way. I make sure he knows where I stand on the issue.

    https://preview.redd.it/uyiydvp8lz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8057bbf86bc1fa5fda86c97dcb06227b7bb0f28

Goals? Where We're Going, We Don't Need Goals...

Just as we begin to establish ourselves in mid-table, our form vanishes. Yet again all my strikers forget how to score, and we go five entire games without a single goal. In fact, we go an entire month and a half without a single one of my strikers scoring.

Our issues are exacerbated by the card counts slowly catching up with the players. My key ball winning midfielders – Karamoko, Pearson, and Ben Thompson – all hit 15 yellow cards at roughly the same time and receive three game suspensions. One of their replacements, Molumby, receives a straight red card after three minutes against Crystal Palace, and in the next game Sonny Bradley also sees red. My full backs also reach 10 yellows and sit out two games each. The squad is down to its bare bones, and we pick up only three points from six games. Our promotion hopes are long gone.

In fact, in the last 14 games of the season we win just twice. Our lack of goals is the most obvious problem – Matt Smith and Toney score only three between them across all those fixtures, and no other strikers score at all. Tom Bradshaw, on loan from Burnley after I'd been a little too keen to sell him, ends the season with only one goal and zero cards in 15 games. He won't be coming back next year. Ryan Edmondson, whom we'd paid £4m for last year, somehow fares even worse, with one goal and no cards in 17 appearances. He has picked up the trait "gets crowd going" from his mentoring group, which is a positive, but how exactly he plans to do this without fouling or scoring is beyond me.

    https://preview.redd.it/1csct3nmlz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d856cdf196ce1f58be2200a98b5e4fd395ef4a10

Despite our relegation form (or perhaps contributing to our relegation form) the players keep hacking away at the opposition. After the most lenient refereeing performance I've ever seen, where we foul West Brom 35 times without being carded once, we average just under four yellows a game. We reach last year's league tally (141 bookings) with nine games still remaining, and steamroll ourselves to a grand total of 172 yellow cards (please tell me this is a record) and 8 reds. League fines total £69,500 for the year.

Rather poetically we finish the season in the exact same way as last year, with red cards for Shane Ferguson and Shaun Hutchinson in the final two games (including yet another against Brentford), but slump to consecutive defeats that leave us in 15th position, a far cry from last year's playoff place. Perhaps fouls and cards don't necessarily translate into goals and points…?

    https://preview.redd.it/mxdjxyyzlz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e4e538fe365253f99224937eb3be1bb1a89a2ee

    https://preview.redd.it/v06bc2r3mz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a3b73740ff3676e0675d270bd86ec80e186c8fd

    End of Season Review

The fans pick Karamoko as their player of the year. He's a solid choice, having picked up 19 yellow cards, though I realise the fans might have been picking based on other factors. Ben Thompson – with 18 yellows and one red card – is also worth a mention.

Personally, however, my vote goes to new signing Ben Pearson. He arrived with a reputation for being a shithouse, and he didn't let me down – 20 yellows and a red from a staggering 155 fouls, receiving five separate suspensions as a result.

Despite strikers usually struggling to get bookings, Matt Smith and Ivan Toney combine for 14 yellows between them. And speaking of Toney – he ends the season as our top goalscorer – not bad for a cheap signing from the division below.

    https://preview.redd.it/eru591ovmz841.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8d5831e0cf666507f9a46bbc698dd02be5cd59f

Overall, though, despite our yellow card count I can't be completely content with the season. Our foul count is slightly down, but our form is the biggest concern. My long-term goal of bringing this football to the Premier League masses looks further away than ever. Furthermore, players have already started rumblings about deserving new contracts, and Millwall simply cannot afford it. We have one of the smallest wage budgets in the league, so it's difficult to see how to progress from here. Regardless, I am committed to the cause, and with Cattermole already joining in the summer, the project will continue onwards.

Been doing a season with Man Utd about 3 years in now and the club was taken over but when the new owners came in they lodged bids for two players who I don't want and agreed contracts

Is there anyway I can stop this ? The responsibility's are still the same just so annoying signing two players who won't make my team and will cost a fortune
