The Anti-Arsenal (A Football Manager Story) - Part 1 Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:25 AM PST The Anti-Arsenal: The goal of this save is to transform Arsenal, a team known (for a while) for their fast, attacking, and creative football – but also for their weaknesses at set pieces. I am Butch Stonehouse, and I am going to turn this around. Arsenal fans are in for a shock, we won't be worrying about any of this passing nonsense, we're going to get the ball forward quickly, we're going to put it in the mixer, we're going to live for corners and, most importantly, we're going to play four four fucking two. Tony Pulis may have played set piece football, but Tony Pulis never had a budget like this. To make this happen we're going to need players who are dangerous from set pieces, and players who are good at taking set pieces. If I could pluck David Beckham from retirement I would, but I'm not sure he'd be interested. We've got 11 players on a football pitch, one of them can take our corners and free kicks, one of them can take our long throws, and one of them has to play in goal – the other 9 should all be a set piece threat. I'm thinking that we find full backs who can take long throws, and our technically skilled players who can take set pieces should be able to play out wide – this way they can use their footballing ability to also whip in crosses during the match. So central midfielders, central defenders, strikers (and most back up players) all need to be good in the air. Transfers and Scouting So how do we find these players, and lets break down specifically what we're looking for. By going into training we can see the important attributes for scoring set pieces: Heading, Anticipation, and Off the Ball. From common sense we can add Jumping Reach, Strength, and Balance, and to a lesser extent as Aggression and Bravery. So, to this effect I've made a scouting filter with some minimum levels I'd like to see for our key attributes: Essentially it's just 14s across the board, but with a specific emphasis on at least 16 Jumping. The age and position filters are greyed out, but saved for quick access, as the requirement for physical and mental attributes lead to far too many ageing target men appearing on the list. We've also got a custom view to more easily view these players talents which displayers all the relevant attributes, as well as other useful details such as a player's height, ability, potential, and valuation. But if we want to score from set pieces we need someone to take them – so we need a player who can take corners and free kicks with great technique (and in dream scenario can curl the ball too for added danger) But as these players are also likely to be positioned out in a wide midfielder role, it would be preferential if they had an ability to cross and pass long distances – but we can check that in our second custom scouting view. The third role that needs filling is our long throw taking full backs. Should be easy to figure this one out, we want players who can take fantastic long throws, but who can still put the ball into the box from out wide if necessary: There are also goalkeepers, but apart from a vague notion that having longer goal kicks will be a benefit, I have no real preference for a goalkeeper as they shouldn't affect the overall style of play much at all. Staff: On a far less interesting note there's also the issue of staff. Many FM players may not know this, and those that do will ignore it because it seems pointless – but all staff in FM have their own preferred tactical style. Now I'm a fair man, and very reasonable, but I will not have anyone working for me at this club if they do not share my love of the four four two. So this is our staff filter. Quality doesn't matter, only their dedication to the cause. July 2018: I also had a philosophies meeting with Stan, and despite the fact that his only input was to suggest that Arsenal shouldn't become a club that focusses on set pieces – he still accepted the philosophy of becoming a club who make the most of set pieces.. Obviously there are players at the club who don't fit our new vision, and it is regrettable that many of these players will have to be The first couple of weeks of the transfer window I identified some key targets, or at least some dream targets. Big names like Mario Mandzukic in attack, as well as Romelu Lukaku, and Edin Dzeko. In defence there were a range of options for players with great height and jumping, but the preference for players with off the ball movement narrowed this down quite a bit. The absolute star player that is a true must-buy for this team, however, was Lazio's Milinkovic-Savic An absolute monster overrated beyond belief in FM19. With 17 Jumping, 19 Balance, 19 Strength, 18 Heading, 16 Anticipation, and 18 Off the Ball Movement – Milinkovic-Savic is the absolute dream player. Unfortunately having signed a contract too recently, he was not willing to consider any transfers. This pretty much sums up the transfer window. For a variety of reasons, all of our best options were unavailable to sign. Reasons varied from viewing the club as a step down, having recently signed a contract, or the selling club being inflexible on an exaggerated price. The second difficulty was in our transfer budget. Now, we started with £30m to spend and I thought this could probably bring in two solid players, or one marquee signing. But to transform Arsenal this greatly, I was going to need two target men, two tall central midfielders, a set piece specialist, and a full back with a Delap-esque long throw. Six Premier League quality players (or close enough) and just £30m to spend. No problem right, we'll just sell to make money? Well.. I tried. Welbeck and Jenkinson were sold almost immediately, but shifting Mohammed Elneny was more of a problem. Teams only seemed willing to offer loans, and stormed off if there was any mention of a mandatory future fee. Having problems there, I moved onto the bigger names: Henrik Mikhitaryan and Alaexander Lacazette. Neither had the height or dead ball skills to benefit our glorious new team, and so both were going to go. Everton were immediately interested in Lacazette, but no larger teams. Mkhitaryan struggled to gain any interest at all. Even when offering at greatly cut prices and offering to cover large chunks of they're hefty wages (Why is Mkhitaryan on £200k per week!!!) I couldn't get any teams to bite. Manchester United were, however, willing to stump up £20m for the services of Mustafi – so at least we had some extra funds there. My second highest priority after Milinkovic-Savic was 25yr old Luis Alberto… also from Lazio. A highly technical player on a leading Premier League level and with excellent set piece taking skills – unfortunately unless I could shift Lacazette and Mkhitaryan, his £40m asking price was looking out of reach. I can only hope PSG don't swoop in before I'm able to raise enough funds. As for signings, my first dip into the transfer window was £5.75m for right back Luis Hernandez, who's 20 Long Throws ability is pure perfection (on a side note: Monreal, Lichtensteiner, and Kolasinac all have >14 Long Throws already, so I was comfortable with bringing in just the lone specialist throw in taker and letting one of those three cover when Hernandez is unavailable). And following the sale of Mustafi, Sebastian Coatesjoined the club for £16m. While Coates doesn't have the 18+ Jumping of many other CB options, he does have 12 Off the Ball Movement compared to the mid single digits of many of his peers. I'm interested to see how much this helps. With Milinkovic-Savic unavailable, and Marouane Fellaini's transfer from Shandong proving far too costly, I needed some height in midfield. To that effect I brought in 23yr old Czech international Tomas Soucek whose 17 Jumping was the best I could find from a PL standard central midfielder. The End of the Window Soucek signed on the 4th of August, I had roughly two weeks left in the window – or so I thought. As it turns out, the PL transfer window ended on the 9th of August this year and I was running out of time. I hadn't managed to sell any big names, and I hadn't brought in a single Target Man. On the 9th of August, on deadline day I manage to finalise two signings – and then I have to panic. For £14m, Poulsen arrives from RB Salzburg who was the best of the available players within budget, though his weaker heading and anticipation skills are a disappointment. The second arrive was Sejad Salihovic – against the advice of all my scouts. Salihovic is not really good enough for the Premier League, in fact he would apparently struggle in the Championship, but my word can he hit a set piece. 18 Corners, 18 Free Kicks, 17 Penalties, as well as strong passing, technique, and long shots. He may not be brilliant, but he has his place in our new world. Club. I mean club. He was also free, and I was running out of money. Salihovic is also the only set piece maestro I was able to sign, I'd have preferred two to be safe, but for now Mesut Ozil will take free kicks and corners when Salihovic can't. It's a downgrade I know, but hopefully Ozil can make up for his disappointing 12 Free Kick taking by being a slightly better player than Salihovic for the other 99% of the match. This is where it turned to panic mode. I still only had one target man, I still only had two strikers in the squad (banking on Lacazette not being one of them by the end of the window), and it was looking like Lucas Torreira with his 6 Jumping Reach might see light of day in the first team.. Disaster. I manage to bring in Antonin Barak with the last few million of my remaining transfer budget. He's not exceptionally, but he can handle the division, and has strength in the air. He also makes it very clear how far my standards have fallen after gazingly longingly at Savic at the start of the window. Problem 3, home grown players. Having only successfully managed to shift three players, all of whom had Home Grown status (Wellbeck, Jjenkinson, Mustafi) – I had a slight registration problem. I had planned much of my window around far more players leaving, but that wasn't happening now. With a budget of just £700k I needed a Home Grown cheap target man – it was time for Peter Crouch. Until Peter Crouch turned me down. He'd signed his Burnley contract too recently. Crap. He was my final resort back up. I never thought that would fail. With Andy Carroll still injured, I had to turn to QPR's Matt Smith – a player I am well aware of purely through his outrageous target man skills in the FM series. I make an offer of £700k, QPR accept, he wants a meagre £12k p/w and we easily reach an agreement. And then I get the message to finalise. I don't have enough in the budget. This is a humbling moment. The transfer of Matt Smith, a solidly Championship level player, for a mere £700k isn't going to happen because we don't have the budget for it. I panic, I enquire about Glenn Murray. Jesus Christ they want how much? £10m? I move on. I look in my reserves, I guess John-Jules might be getting some minutes for his 15 Jumping. I find one more player, he's English, he's Home Grown, he's transfer listed, and he's cheaper than £700k. He's also comically bad. 'Yes', I think 'this is the man who will lead us to glory'. I have officially gone mad. Meet Matt Rhead from Lincoln Town. The fans are disappointed. I'm disappointed. Lacazette is moved back into the first team from the U23s. Let's hope Poulsen doesn't get injured… The season begins We kick off the season at West Ham. Hernandez starts with his long throws, and Salihovic starts on the left wing. Aubameyang, Iwobi, and Aaron Ramsey are the remnants of a former Arsenal who make the cut. The game goes well - for a while. We're clearly the stronger side and Poulsen is getting a lot of chances in the air, unfortunately he's failing to score any of them. We have a decent chance from a corner, and then another from a long throw. But eventually a calamitous individual error from Rob Holding at the back puts Arnautovic in 1v1 and we go a goal behind.. A frustrating moment, but we can carry on. Unfortunately it gets worse in the 44th minute, our set piece specialist lunges in for a tackle and picks up a second yellow card. Wonderful. A goal behind and down to 10 men. In the second half we continue to play well, but Poulsen misses another big chance and we just can't score. Then tragedy strikes, I forgot about the deadly long shots of FM19, and we concede a worldie to Obiang from 30 yards out. I might have to factor this into our tactic and close down all central midfield players more. Later in the game Poulsen misses another header, but thankfully was fouled in the process. We score the penalty to make it 2-1, and despite coming close when Ramsey hits the crossbar after a long throw in the 90th minute, that's how the score stays. Not a great start. Let's hope it improves. Next up, I try to get the team playing proper British football, and work out what our most effective set piece routines are. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:01 AM PST Before we say anything else, THANK YOU! We didn't have any idea the response we would get from our original post would be so incredible, and it's been great interacting with you all. Secondly, and maybe most importantly, the bug with homegrown players has now been fixed thanks to /u/Coltons13. You can download version 1.1 of the four-tier American soccer mod here. And finally, an update on the challenge. We've seen a few of your stories so far, and we're impressed by the work you've managed to accomplish! Most people have been showing us their progress on Twitter, though others have DM'd us. Although nobody won the top division in one weekend, a few came pretty close, including both this person, who made it to the quarterfinals of the playoffs and won the U.S. Open Cup. And surely Jordan, who signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, can't be far away now... Still, we want to emphasize that it's okay to take your time here. There's no need to complete the challenge quickly, and of course it will take longer to write all the congratulations letters if all the requests come in at once! When you've finished, you can send your screenshots and report to us on reddit, or you can email me at jason@forwardmadisonfc.com. For those of you that have taken an interest in us, we'd be delighted if you subscribed to /r/ForwardMadisonFC and followed along with our progress in real life as well. And who knows, even if you live halfway across the world, maybe you'll come to a game someday! [link] [comments]
