A story of how I went from hero to zero managing in Iceland.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 12:11 PM PST

Thought I'd drop a quick story of my time managing in Iceland.

The Mrs couldn't care less, so I thought someone here might be interested or at least feel my pain!

I started off at Afturelding who were freshly promoted to the second tier of Icelandic football at the start of the game. The reason for this was solely because I visited the town the club is based in while I was on holiday.

The first season started of relatively well. We managed to somewhat fluke second place in the league. We sat in fourth for most of the season and snook up into second on the last day of the season with the other two teams losing. This secured a historical highest ever league position for the club and a first ever promotion to the top flight.

The winter off season went extremely well. An affiliate link with Red Star in France secured us three exceptionally good players on loan. The best of the three being left winger Dhiakete. I also signed Jordan Ponticelli on loan from Coventry to bolster the attack.

We knew this season would be tough, so we implemented a defensive, counter attacking style of play, soaking up pressure and hitting opponents with a fluid counter attack.

The league also saw two high profile managers join, with Henrik Larsson taking the reigns at KA and Zlatan Ibrahimovic taking over at KR.

The season ended up being phenomenal. Dhiakete was the league's top scorer and we had qualified for the Champions League. A big war of words with Zlatan on the last day saw us pip his KR team 2-1 to clinch the title. Our counter attacking set up tore teams to shreds. Soaking up phases of play and then hitting them on the counter outnumbering their defence three or four on two. We rode our luck at times, but grinding out the 1-0 wins is what makes Champions.

So we go into the third season. The Champions League was a bust. Losing in the first qualifying round to Slovan Bratislava (who eventually made it to the group stages). So it was the Euro Cup 2 for us. A fairly favourable draw saw us beat Ballymena in the final qualifying round 9-1 on aggregate and we made the group stages. This is where things started to get tough. A group consisting of Wolves, Sampdoria and Rennes meant it was damage limitation at best.

This is where things got really difficult. A string of cancelled fixtures earlier in the year due to the Icelandic snow, and games getting cancelled due to international call ups meant the fixtures were massively getting backed up.

For over two months we were playing on Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday and then Saturday again. We did ourselves proud in the Euro Cup, finishing on 0 points. But never conceding more than two goals in a game, against clubs who pay a single player more than our whole squads value. The league form started to drop off though. We were picking up too many draws, paying the price for a heavy schedule and conceding late on in games. The younger players not good enough to cover for their more experienced counterparts.

So it came down the the final day. Zlatan's KR side, needing a point to clinch the title, against my Afturelding side needing a win to sneak into fourth and at least keep the club in Europe next season. The war of words between myself and Zlatan was kicked off early, with the press bringing up our past exchanges from earlier in the season. Sadly it was KR who prevailed. 1-1 until an hour in, but succumbing to the tired legs and conceding two late goals to hand the title over to KR and having to settle for a mid table sixth place finish.

What happened next blew my mind, I was called in to a meeting with the board, unhappy with the season's performance. I was baffled. A record league finish in the first year, a league title in the second, and two and a half million pounds in the bank from the European run. More money than they have ever had and enough to sustain the club for the next five years. But seemingly memories are short, and I was shown the door and unceremoniously sacked from the club.

It's now pre season and I am looking for a new club. Part of me wants to move away to a new country who respect the achievements I bring. Yet part of me wants to get back in the saddle at another Icelandic club to try and topple Zlatan's KR side and my former employers!

Unbelievable that I've won the Serie A with Fiorentina in the first season. Still over the moon, absolutly chuffed!

I'm creating a site for unique Football Manager ideas, challenges and custom clubs. Would this appeal to you at all?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 05:01 AM PST

Essentially it is in the early stages at the moment but I wanted somewhere I could practice my graphic design, web design and love of Football Manager all in one place. I won't post the link yet as it is not finished and I'm not sure advertising is allowed on here.

The goal is simple really. I am always thinking of new and creative ways to keep Football Manager fresh and exciting each year and in creating this new site I hope to share them (and others') with the wider FM community. While it is my aim to create a fun space for us all to share ideas it is ultimately my goal to give FM that extra bit of life each year when the initial novelty has worn off.

The site will be very clean and very basic with minimal jazz and pizzazz. I want somewhere that does what it says on the tin and doesn't have a million pages and menus for it's users to sift through. I don't want to be another FM Base or FMScout, I want to be different and share unique and approaches to playing the game.

It will have a range of challenges organised by categories that I have thought up myself but will also display those of other people who have perhaps sent in their own custom challenges or databases etc and want to get involved too. I am hugely in favour of others becoming contributors and having their ideas displayed proudly for all to see.

It is my hope that people who perhaps get bored of FM and struggle to think of fun ideas to keep them playing will visit the site and make use of the different challenges, saves, custom clubs, downloads and more to keep the game going past that February/March time each year where it becomes a little stale.

That is essentially it! I have begun constructing the site and if nothing else it has been a good exercise in how to create a website and troubleshoot the hundreds and hundreds of things that can go wrong! And trust me, as a novice there has been a lot!

But yeah, ultimately I was wondering if it was something that sounds appealing to you guys and if it is a site idea you wouldn't mind bookmarking once the time is right?

    Thanks for reading!

Streaming FM20 on twitch, doing a journeyman save...

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 05:20 PM PST

A few seasons in with Swedish team Assyriska. Never streamed anything before (never posted a thread on reddit...more of a comments guy). Not sure why you'd wanna watch but if you do I'd welcome tactical advice, comments, job search guidance... whatever. Open to starting another save if you feel robbed of seeing my first few seasons which included a torrid winless 27 day spell at AFK Linkoping... before somehow landing a job at Assyriska in the league above, saving them from relegation and then getting them promoted to the Superettan 2 seasons later. Next stop Allsvenskan... then maybe leave sweden behind. Doesn't matter no one is watching and no one is reading this. Night all. Oh and on twitch I'm bojanlopez.

Edit: As well as tactical advice, general streaming/twitch advice welcome... having an absolute weston-SUPER-MARE sorting this out.

First season in the Prem and I genuinely have no idea how I am doing this...

First season in the Prem and I genuinely have no idea how I am doing this...

It is like I have found an option for an easy mode. My players are not fantastic and the tactic is the same i used in the championship where we struggled in most games. So far i have only lost to 2 of the 'big 6'. 1-0 losses coming away from home against Liverpool and Man Utd (Pretty decent results for a newly promoted team). On the flip side I have won 2-0 against MANCHESTER CITY, 2-1 against Arsenal and a 1-1 draw to Chelsea. I just wanted to share because I am in genuine shock.

Did the Russians just pull a fast one on me..?

Pretty new to the game... Happened on the cup final. I'm feeling great!!!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:29 PM PST

I think it's cool when you start the game, and it brings up you, as the manager and prompts you to load that game. In the background is the locker room. Complete with your players names over their seat.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 06:25 PM PST

With that in mind, I hope they work on the crowds in the stands. Sometimes they are just all one color, clones and stand and move the same. No variation at all. Or, every other fan is a clone of each other, moving in unison.

2021 Leicester City board deem EPL placement "Not Important"

Going into my third year at Leicester City and the board have let me know that where we finish in the EPL is "not important" with no option for me to change expectations.

Is this normal? I've never seen this before at all the clubs I've managed. Wondering if others have had the same thing happen.

How to take advantage of fast players without playing counter football?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:05 AM PST

With Arsenal, my plan is to build my tactics around the pace from my wingers and fullbacks.

Obviously sitting deep and counter attack would be ideal, but that doesn't go well with a club like Arsenal.

Do you guys have any ideas how I can build my tactics on pace?
