The Perfect Couple of Crystal Palace and Walter Mazzarri

The Perfect Couple of Crystal Palace and Walter Mazzarri

The following story is from my current FM18 save, following the intertwined careers of Crystal Palace and manager Walter Mazzarri, culminating in the finish of the 2031-32 season. During this save, I have managed at Malmo (2017-18), RB Leipzig (2018-30), and Everton (2030-32) so far, and have had no direct influence on the club, so this development is all without my manipulation.

It's the beginning of the 2017-18 Premier League season, and the save is about to begin. Crystal Palace look to secure a respectable league campaign under manager Roy Hodgson, while unemployed manager Walter Mazzarri looks to find a new job following his dismissal from Watford at the beginning of the calendar year. Fast forward to the end of this year, and we soon hit rock bottom for both parties. Crystal Palace finish 18th in the league and are relegated to the Championship, sacking Hodgson along the way. Mazzarri still cannot find a job, and is likely spending his hours as a pundit on SkySports just to live on.

From here, there is nowhere else to go but up. The next season proved a little more beneficial, as Crystal Palace was promoted back to the Prem with a 2nd place finish in the Championship. Meanwhile, Mazzarri was gifted with another spell at former club Inter Milan in December of 2018, a position which would grant him great success.

In 2020, things are back to where they started, as Palace are back to a mid-table squad and Inter are finishing towards the top of Serie A. Then, Mazzarri gets a break with a chain of easier draws in the Champions League, working his way to the final in 2021 at the Velodrome in Marseille against a Pep Guardiola led PSG. Sadly, he would lose this match despite proving himself as a capable top level manager in Europe.

In the summer of 2023, Mazzarri would get his next break. Real Madrid sacked Jorge Jesus following a poor showing in the league, and up and coming Mazzarri was the one to take the hot seat, coming a long way from unemployed former Watford manager to manager of Los Blancos just six years later.

The next year, Palace find a way to finish 7th in the Prem, led by manager Gary Rowett, finally having the opportunity of European football in the 2024-25 campaign. They would take advantage of this, reaching the final of the Europa League, losing to Bournemouth in Palermo, Italy. At this point, both Palace and Mazzarri have reached a European final, despite neither being able to take home the silverware yet.

The next year, Mazzarri leads Madrid to a Champions League Final against my RB Leipzig side at Wembley, but I took the game, winning my second of five Champions Leagues. Still, Mazzarri had found a way to lead multiple teams to the Champions League Final, and his managerial reputation was growing every year.

In the 2027-28 season, Crystal Palace make it back to a Europa League Final, this time in Florence, Italy against Liverpool. This time, Palace and their manager Alex Neil took home the trophy, giving Crystal Palace their first European trophy ever. However, Neil was sacked in a controversial decision following the poor league campaign from Palace. Palace then hire Jurgen Klopp, who was sacked in January from the same Liverpool side Palace defeated in the final just days earlier.

Just months later while performing well at 4th in the league, Klopp decides to leave for an opening at Bayern, leaving the post at Crystal Palace open and very attractive considering their massive upside and potential, led by Argentinian striker and captain Ariel Cerdan.

This is where the marriage begins. In possibly the most scrutinized managerial change of the century, Walter Mazzarri decides to leave the Bernabeu, instead moving to the friendly confines of Selhurst Park and Crystal Palace. Yes, the acting Real Madrid manager left his post for the job at Crystal Palace. You read that right.

In his first full season at the helm, Mazzarri did not disappoint. The Eagles reached a top 4 finish in the Premier League in the 2029-30 season, as well as reaching another Europa League Final, this time in Lisbon against Chelsea. Palace wound up winning their second Europa League in three years, and Mazzarri collected his first European trophy. Meanwhile, Palace secured another spot in the Champions League for the next season.

The next year, the Eagles finished 4th in the Prem yet again, but it felt like their window for European dominance was dwindling. Mazzarri was getting older at 69 years old, and the captain Cerdan hit 30 years old as well. Palace reached the Quarter-Final of the UCL, where they were knocked out by defending champions Manchester United. In a season where the expectations were as high as ever before, the consistency of Crystal Palace was almost seen as a disappointment.

Going into the 2031-32 year, the landscape in England was changing. Man Utd and Man City were still at the top, as United had won the Prem four years running. Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham were falling down, while Liverpool was about as reputable as the beginning of the save. The up and coming teams are Palace and my Everton squad, fresh off a 3rd place the year before.

In the league, Palace largely under-performed, falling to 5th place with no Champions League qualification. Also, Mazzarri decided to announce his retirement following the conclusion of the season at 70 years old. Star striker Cerdan turned 31 as well, and it seemed as if this year was the last opportunity to make a run for a Champions League. Luckily, Palace drew Hamburg in the Round of 16, advancing to the Quarter-Final to face a lesser AC Milan side. They advanced yet again, now staring down Manchester City in the Semi-Finals. As if in a movie, they advanced to the final to face Manchester United who knocked them out two previous times.

So, the stage was set. Walter Mazzarri's final match as a manager and his third Champions League Final. The Stade de France. United led by Antonio Conte, looking for a second Champions League in three years. The ultimate underdog, Palace, trying to pull off the unthinkable and win their first Champions League title ever with a retiring manager and an aging squad. The game was largely dominated by the Eagles, and they pulled off a 2-0 win to secure the title. The new greatest team in London took the trophy home to Selhurst Park, and Mazzarri drives off into the sunset grabbing the ultimate coveted silverware in his final match.

That's where the save is at now. Where Palace will go is yet to see. But for now, they are on top of the footballing world. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed!

Have you ever added a second manager just to sabotage a team that you hate?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 11:33 AM PST

I'll first say that I'm an Arsenal fan. I've been doing a journeyman save, where I started unemployed and then got a job in MLS before moving onto Ajax and so on.

While I've been doing this, I created a second head coach named Dumb Idiot, who I made manage Tottenham. With Dumb Idiot, over several years and several sacks, I've sold Kane and Eriksen for pennies, fucked up their tactics, and plummeted them into the Championship.

I know it technically ruins the integrity of the save, but it's just so funny to me. Has anyone else ever done something like this?

BEST £9K I HAVE EVER SPENT

The transfers on this game are honestly a complete mess at times.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:49 AM PST

So playing in my second season and during the summer transfer window, Barcelona decide to pay the £90M buyout clause for Saul from Atletico Madrid.

I am in the Champions League and playing against Inter and I notice that Saul is now a player for them. I look at his profile, turns out Barcelona loaned him out near enough immediately after buying him. Look further into his contract and it turns out Barcelona are paying 50% of his wages of a £250k salary p/w! On top of that Inter have an option at the end of the season to purchase him for £65.05M!

Is anyone else having these nonsensical transfers occuring?!
