I can't buy a single player. All my players have to come through my youth academy.

Just started my 4th season. Already developed PTSD due to being an amateur/semi-amateur club.

    Anyone interested in following?

    I can post screenshots tomorrow.

Players refusing to leave the field after being subbed and the option for managers to storm off mid game absolutely needs to be added into FM2020

So I'm watching the Man U - Liverpool match...

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 06:45 AM PST

And Bobby Firmino is coming off, Danny Sturridge on to replace him, and I start thinking, 'Where did I shift him off to in the end? Burnley? No, that was the last game. Bournemouth? No that's where he wanted to go? Oh yeah, it was to the MLS, the San Jose team.'

Then I start to ponder, 'I wonder where he ended up in real life?'

This while sat, watching him getting his last instructions before coming on to the pitch, wracking my brains as it slowly dawns on me, 'This is real life, Paul, that's the real Danny Sturridge there, he's still at Liverpool.'

This game should be listed as an augmented reality.

I saw countless careers destroyed in FM, but this time it's different a.k.a. I run a bloody charity

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 11:56 PM PST

So I fire up FM18 and start a save with Hansa Rostock to see what it's like to manage in Germany.

Between injuries and a short bench, we basically have 5 defenders and we're playing 4 at the back. The ass man tells me about the trialists' match, and I go like "sure man, scout 'em, do your thing mate". I mean, we need bodies, we're in the third division, we might as well try our luck with some Bundesliga breedject.

A few kids catch my eye, among them Yannick Essomba. Most stats are hidden, but what I need no scouting to see is that a bunch of other teams want him, including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. I offer him and the others a trial and move on with pre-season.

Two days later, in the morning, he signs. I get to see more stats, and it turns out that Yannick has the raw pace and passing to be my Dani Alves for the next 20 years. Granted, shit positioning and teamwork, but let a man dream.

In the afternoon we have the first game of preseason, and he's on the bench. Some 75 minutes in, our star left winger gets injured. I learn how to swear in German and sub him out. While I'm at it, I decide to give minutes to the kids to see what they can do. We concede the equaliser on the 85th minute. I practice my swearing. On the 89th a trialist heads in the 2-1 from a corner.

Good lads. Keep a cool head in stoppage time and I'll be happy.

Then the game pauses. Substitution required. Yannick got injured. Heh, whatever. I sub in somebody out of position and call it a day.

Next thing I know, I get this piece of news in the inbox.

In my head I picture Tong Po finishing Van Damme's bro in Kickboxer.

The worst part is that Frank, the physio, is telling me to let the kid die on a sidewalk. Frank, I hate to break it to you, but you're a cunt. That's what happened to Van Damme's bro in Kickboxer - they both just get thrown out of the fighting pit and he ends up paralysed.

(Now, truth be told, if Yannick's brother was also playing for us, I'd probably let the kid die, in the hope of igniting the fighting spirit of his brother, whom would then become the greatest of all time, like Van Damme in Kickboxer. But that's not the case.)

You won't believe what happens next #FaithInHumanityRestored

Going the whole nine yards for Yannick #PrayForYannick

More than a club - we are a club with a heart. No kid left behind. Yannick is one of us, we're going to take care of him, he's gonna come back stronger than ever, and he's gonna repay our love by becoming a club legend. More than a legend - the heart and soul of a club with a heart. And a soul.

We just need a signat... oh wait, Frank's being a cunt again and ratting me out to the board.

    Well FUCK YOU, FRANK. #FuckYouFrank

Poll: should I resign due to irreconcilable differences with the board, or stick around and sign Yannick again as soon as he's cleared?

Poll/2: any suggestions on how to exact my revenge on Frank other than firing him on the spot?

    #JeSuisYannick

TL;DR: got a promising 14 y.o. on trial; 9 hours after joining and 13 minutes into his first match he gets a major spinal injury; tried to sign him cause bleeding heart but board vetoes it; contemplating rage quit. Also, watch Van Damme's Kickboxer.

P.S.: we're here for you, Yannick

Eddie Howe: The Great British Tactician

Eddie Howe: The Great British Tactician

My first manager story comes from the southern coast of England with Bournemouth icon Eddie Howe. The up and coming manager of Bournemouth in real life only spent one year at the club in the save, leading the Cherries to a 12th place Premier League finish in the 2017-18 campaign. Despite his short reign at the club in the save, his lasting legacy at the club forever changed their reputation to a mid-table Premiership side. His work to promote the club to the top-flight and keep them relevant in the league cemented the Cherries in the Prem, and in 2025 they even won a Europa League title under Patrick Vieira.

    Bournemouth's League History

However, Howe's notability in the save did not come from his work at the club level. Under Gareth Southgate, England under-performed at the 2018 World Cup, losing 2-1 in the Round of 16 to Belgium. After the tournament, Southgate decided to resign from the position, leaving the job in charge of the Three Lions open. It was then that Howe got his big break. He was unveiled as the new England manager on July 24th, and his career would never be the same again.

This England side proved to be one of the most talented in the world, spear-headed by striker Harry Kane, midfielder Dele Alli, and defender John Stones. This generation of players had a lot in common with Howe. The squad was fairly young with some experience, but they had little success at the highest level yet. Likewise, Howe had proven himself in the Championship, and he had showed he had the ability to safeguard against relegation. Still, he had yet to make it up the levels in Europe yet, only managing one mid-table club in England so far.

Enter the 2019 year. In Euro Qualifiers, Howe led the team to wins in every match but one, leading to a very successful campaign. In the year, striker Marcus Rashford proved lethal, netting ten goals in as many games, posting a 7.81 average rating. Going into the 2020 Euros, Howe seemed to have his team ready for a title challenge.

    England's 2019 Season

With all the momentum in the world, Howe's England drew Albania, Switzerland, and Finland in the group stage. They would win all three group games 2-0 as Harry Kane would find the goal four times just in those three matches. This would set up a Round of 16 meeting with Poland at Hampden Park. With the home advantage looking to avenge their Round of 16 exit four years earlier at the hands of Iceland, England pulled through with a 1-0 victory from yet another Harry Kane goal.

    England vs Poland

Next, they headed to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to face off against a German side in the Quarter-Finals. While up 1-0, England concede a 93rd minute equalizer to send the match into extra time. There, Jack Wilshire and Danny Welbeck added two goals to make a 3-1 final score sending England to the Semis. From there, they faced home advantage through the rest of the tournament, next hosting Turkey at Wembley while the final was also set in London as well.

    England vs Germany

Against Turkey, Raheem Sterling and Welbeck scored to give the Three Lions a 2-0 victory and a Euro Final birth. There, they would face off against Rafa Benitez and Spain at Wembley. It would prove to be a quiet game at first, but the game turned on its side in the 80th minute when Dele Alli was sent off. Surely, this was it for Howe and the team. However, Spain could not capitalize as the game went to extra time despite England only having ten men.

    England vs Turkey

Then, as if out of nowhere, Sturridge and Welbeck score to give the Three Lions a two goal lead, one which they would ride to a 2-0 victory and a European Championship. Howe had done it. He had taken his nation to the top of the European world, winning a trophy and a Final after going one man down. Following the tournament, he would go on to have yet another successful season in 2021.

    England vs Spain

His England side would go undefeated, only drawing one match at Cyprus in a World Cup Qualifier. That year, the Confederations Cup was held in Qatar. Yes, that means his side won every match in the competition, ultimately defeating Brazil 1-0 in the final from a Harry Kane winner in the 118th minute. Howe had added another trophy to his collection, and it seemed as if he would go on to become one of the greatest English managers of all time.

    England vs Brazil

In 2022, he would lead the team into a World Cup which was relocated to Australia. Drawn into a group with Belgium, Colombia, and New Zealand, Howe's team had every chance of making a deep run into the tournament. They would win against Belgium, draw to Colombia, and draw to New Zealand in what would become a disappointing match for the squad. Still, England advanced out of the group, paired with Brazil in a fixture at the Parramatta Stadium in Sydney.

    Howe's Final Match as Manager

Sadly, Howe's wonderful run in charge of the country would come to an end here. He lost 2-1 to Brazil, going out in the Round of 16 in an overall disappointing World Cup. Following the conclusion of the competition, Howe was terminated after four largely successful years at the helm. After a few months of unemployment, Howe decided to retire from management in December of 2022, closing on a successful career in charge of Bournemouth and England. Only 45 years old at the time of his retirement, it was an unfortunate end to the career of such a young manager with such potential.

Where does Howe's legacy fall among the careers of other managers? His two titles as England manager will certainly cement his position as a great English manager, yet he never had the opportunity to reach the highest level of club management. Personally, I would commend Howe from his impact on the entire status of his beloved Bournemouth, completely changing the club from a lower level to a consistent Premier League side which has still not been relegated in 2032. Although not earning a place in the game's Hall of Fame of English managers, Howe absolutely deserves a place in my Managerial Hall of Fame for his work.

Even though I’m using Larne, who are in a much stronger financial position than the rest of the Northern Irish second division, there is no better feeling than a strong start to the season on all fronts!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 04:54 PM PST

It doesn't matter if you beat them 5-0 and don't allow a shot on goal, the other manager will always say: "I think we gave them quite a game and could beat them if given another chance."
