My experience with FM19 Mobile (7 seasons in, long read)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 03:57 PM PST

Hey! Brief background: I've been playing football management games since around 2001, and as time has gone by and I've got less and less time to be playing videogames, last year I thought I'd try FM Mobile for the first time. This post is meant to give a somewhat detailed account of my experience and maybe give some tips for new players, as I found very little proper discussion of FM Mobile online.

As a final note: I'm a football coach and a Manchester United supporter. I play as manager of Manchester United.

    General stats:

    Interesting records and events:

    • We finished the 2024/2025 season having lost 0 matches in 90 minutes. We only lost the Community Shield on penalties and won all other competitions.

    • Despite winning almost everything, I'm nowhere near to being the best manager in the world. Allegri, Conte and Deschamps are ahead of me. I've got no idea what I have to do to get the number one spot; I'd imagine winning the World Cup must add massively to your manager points? But none of them are currently managing nations (Monaco, Werder Bremen and Chelsea, respectively).

    • My record for most consecutive games without defeat is 108; I'm not sure if I'm currently in that run or if it is from earlier seasons. My record for most consecutive wins is 38.

    • While I usually keep my first team with 20 players + 3 youngsters, other clubs have massive squads with dozens of players earning over 250k per week, and they spend upwards of 100 million per season reinforcing themselves. I'm not sure how realistic that is.

    • My top wage is 350k per week, whilst PSG has players earning 500k+ per week.

    • I've managed to win all of our competitions in the seasons two times so far (Community Shield, European Super Cup, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup).

    • After 7 seasons, and dozens of penalties awarded, I've never seen an opossition player receive a direct red from a penalty.

    • Sometimes, when renewing contracts or getting new players in, they'd ask for a 5M+ signing bonus. What's interesting is that despite having a rich club, with extremely healthy finances (8M wage budget, using only around 3.5M of those, and a 250M+ transfer budget that at this point I'm hardly even touching), the board would never allow me to offer a signing bonus in excess of 4.4M. No idea what's that about nor how I can modify this, so it is what it is. I know I could offset that by offering the player higher wages, but I keep a tight control on wage expenditure.

    • One time, I had agreed on a swap transfer with PSG, Mbappe coming my way in exchange of Dybala going their way, plus a few million. The transfer was agreed on October, and Mbappe was meant to arrive in January; however, about two weeks after agreeing to the transfer, Mbappe injured his spine (!) and spent 9 months on the sidelines. Obviously, the transfer was cancelled.

    • Despite my success throughout the seasons, it was only after my second season that any other club or national team approached me. It was Barcelona, and I said no.

    Tactics:

    • Formation: I invariably use a 4-3-3. The only flexibility I have in this sense is that I either play a CF or a SS (depending on the players available, basically.)

    • Shape: I hardly ever touch these settings. If I'm already 3-0 up and I get a player sent off, for instance, and I just want to close the game, I might go to Control or Counter, Balanced width and Normal tempo.

    • Defense: I hardly ever mess with these settings too. When watching the matches, I'm checking the Match Stats screen. If our Fouls number is significantly higher than the opponent's, I'd go with Normal tackling; if we're closing down a match and I don't want any injuries or silly red cards, I might go down all the way to Cautious. Time Wasting and Closing Down would be modified in extreme cases (such as during a marginal lead and if we get a player sent off).

    • Attack: Very stable setting too. If I'm playing Counter, I'd go with a Direct passing style. Our Passing Focus only changes if the rival is significantly weaker in one wing.

    Transfer policy:

    • OUT: Our first transfer window was aimed at stabilising and improving the squad. I remember that we sold: Fellaini, Smalling, Rojo, Pogba, Martial, Mata, Fred, Andreas Pereira, and a few youngsters that had no future.

    • IN: In the same vein, we bought: Süle, Manolas, Alexander-Arnold, Alaba, Verratti and a few youngsters.

    • After that, it was all about improving details in the squad.

    • Contracts are renewed for 4-5 years aiming at running them out when the players turn 30. If they're still good and useful, I'd renew them for 2 years, hopefully lowering their wages.

    • I also keep a close eye on players whose contracts are expiring soon. I untick the "Show only interested" box, as some players might not be interested in joining your team, but only after you offer them an attractive amount of money. I signed Donnarumma on a free after offering him only slightly lower wages than De Gea's. A few years in, they were on equal wages. I've also signed many decent young players for free (an average of 2 per season), who are then sold for anywhere between 7 and 50 million pounds.

    • Building on this last point, I follow the soccernomics principle of selling young players if I receive any offer above their value. I don't need to have them on the team, and there'll always be equally good young players who can replace them.

    • If a player with 2 or less years in his contract doesn't want to renew, I usually try to sell them - unless they are my absolute first choice in that position. For instance, when Alaba turned 31 his contract was up and he refused to renew it over and over. I didn't want to sell him, and up to that point I had Grimaldo rotating with him. However, I ended up setting up an incoming transfer of another top level left back in case Alaba ended up actually going. In the end, on the very same day his contract was up, Alaba opened talks with me and I renewed his contract - for about 50% of his previous wages. I canceled the incoming transfer of this other left-back, and I'm happy. But if a non-obvious-first-choice player doesn't want to renew, or demands extortionate wages, I just sell them.

    • If I have a good youngster coming through and he has all the conditions to be first choice, or at least heavy rotation, I don't have much regards in selling a 30+ player that might hinder the youth's progress. For example, my two strikers were Lukaku and Dybala. Both were 31+ and I had a 20 year old striker who was already first choice material, so I sold Dybala (for 50M, when he was worth 110M+) so that this youngster could rotate with Lukaku.

    • I keep a tight ship in terms of wages. If a player asks for 400k+ a week, he's wasting his time.

    • Very important: In this game, it's quite easy to do swap deals. The other club won't care if they already have 10 other players with the same position of the player you're offering them: all they care about is the value of said player. So, if you enquire for a player and they tell you they want 50M, and you have a player who's worth 40M, you can offer a straight swap for that player +10M and they will accept it 95% of the time. Sometimes, there's a slight difference in valuation - for instance, they might want 12M instead of the 10M you are offering, because they value your player at 38M and not 40M. But you get the gist of it.

    Final comments:

I assume this game is easier than the desktop version because it's meant to be more casual, and it manages to make me feel good when I win trophies or I can get a good transfer for my team.

I hope you enjoyed this narration/sort of review. Any tips or questions will be welcome.

This is probably the best run I've ever had without save-scumming. Ended fittingly by the bottom team in the league and effectively killing any hope of breaking Celtic's stranglehold.

So much packed into one picture. 1) This was my first ever European final with TUFC. It went quite well. 2) This guy has 'completely opposed' me for most of the season. 3) I pulled a ridiculous face in the facial recognition thing when creating my manager and this regen's face is suddenly half mine.

    Sorry Spurs....

First season in the Champions League and we managed this:

    With this:

    TWICE!

Then we managed to beat Juventus 4-2 in the groups too to knock them out, but suffered a quick exit to Leverkusen in the 1st KO Round of the CL.

And after a third consecutive Copa del Rey Semi-Final loss to Real Madrid we had the league to concentrate on and went on to clinch the first ever title in the club's history!

    Notable wins include:

4-0 v Real Madrid (1st day of the season)

6-0 v Deportivo de La Coruna (rivals)

    BOOM!

My player refuses to score from January to March

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 01:56 PM PST

So yeah, the title is self explantory. I have a regen on my save. Literally the best regen I've seen in my life. I play him currently as a Shadow Striker in a 4-4-1-1.

Anyway for the third season in a row, he has opted to take the start of the year off. I have no explanation for why he does this. He starts out the season extremely strongly, then by mid January he just packs it in for a couple of months. Sometimes he still plays well, other times he doesn't, but he just stops scoring.

If I go back through my last 20 games, he's played in 17. Before the 1st of January, he had scored 12 goals in 9 games. Since the 1st of January he has scored twice in 8.

The season before (I kept track of the League goals but not overall goals) He came into January with 21 Goals in 18 Games. He scored 11 in his last 8. The 12 games between them? He scored 3 times (2 were penalties btw. Also worth mentioning he missed 5 penalties in the PL that season, 3 of those misses came during these 2/3 months.)

The season before that I ended up dropping him. The best player I've ever seen on FM was benched after scoring 2 goals in 15 games and becoming a hinderance.

My scouts think he is a "very consistent performer" so it's not his consistency. Nobody else in the team experiences this - if anything they play better during this period because they have to carry their fucking deadweight """""""""superstar""""""". It's happened with different tactics, with him in different positions, and with different roles. He's robust as fuck, no long-term or recurring injuries. I don't think I can put it down to just being out of form, because form doesn't totally transform players for specific months out of every year. There's no way to make this guy score from early/mid January until about mid/late March.

I like long-term saves, I like to immerse myself in one game. I like to meticulously keep stats, compare records and that, and tbh it's getting very difficult to motivate myself to play this save when the guy who is the greatest talent the football world has ever seen for 9 months of the year doesn't seem to exist for the other 3. Has anyone else experienced this? How do I fix it?

    Squad Status

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 10:07 PM PST

    Hey!

How do you guys manage/handle the squad status of your players? I am a "rotation" kinda guy. I usually play very low/shadow leagues with very small teams, hence, I use this rule of rotating. Everyone plays whenever they are fit or if they fit the formation. However, I have been having problems with people wanting to play more.

Do you set the squad status to "rotation" for all players so that they stop demanding so much play time? Are there any consequences of doing so?

When you buy a player, and comes with "key player" and you buy it, and then u turn down the squad status, does it have a negative effect?

    Thanks peeps
