Your first tactic at a new club: Tutorial

Your first tactic at a new club: Tutorial

Many new managers have difficulties knowing what to do or how to prioritise tasks when starting a new save or moving to a new club. No judgement, we all did. So I thought I'd create a guide to help out.

I just started a new save with Palermo in Serie C. This will be a step by step process on what I did.

    The team

The first thing I do when looking at my new team is to isolate 3 key players.

    1. The goalscorer
    2. The creator
    3. The progressor

Why do I do this? Because I believe a tactic should be a system created to suit the players at the club to get the best performances possible. By identifying these three key players I have the spine of my team and then I can fill the other 7 outfield positions with complimentary roles to support these players.

The goalscorer is self explanatory - which player in my team is going to be the player I want to get the ball to in order to score goals. In my team, Mattero Brunori was the obvious choice. Not the best off the ball movement but a huge work rate, decent physical & technical stats. Due to his aggression & work rate the ideal role would be: PF(A).

    The goalscorer

The creator is my primary creative threat to play risky passes to my goalscorer & generally control the flow of play. Typically found in midfield, but not exclusively. I've had superb creators from the full back or number 9 position.

Unfortunately, nobody in my squad stood out to be a primary creator - but my 3 best players in central midfield can all pass pretty well, but lack in flair, vision & technique. I can't rely on any of these to be my number 10

I'll go into more detail later how this discovery affected my tactical decision, but for now I'll stick to the spine of the team.

The progressor is the role whom I want to progress the ball - pick the ball up from my CBs or FBs and progress the ball through the lines to my forwards. The obvious choice here would be Francisco De Rose who has superb attributes to be my box to box midfielder picking the ball up, and progressing the ball whilst also providing support to my defensive line and getting the occasional shot off from outside the box.

    The progressor

With these 2 key players I now have the spine of my team. So now I look at the rest of the players to identify a formation.

    The formation

I have plenty of squad depth in CM, so a 3 CM formation would work best. I also have 2 capable wingers. The 433 works perfectly as I also have two defensive fullbacks, a superb holding midfielder & only 3 registered CBs at the club. I also only have 2 strikers so it doesn't make sense to run a 442 or any 3ATB systems with a strike partnership.

    The style of play

Once we know who my key players are and what formation I'll run, its time to identify a playing style. Am I going to sit deep and counter or press high and aim to keep the majority of posession? Press high? Defend wide? Patient or aggressive passing?

I notice the vast majority of my team are transitional - all have great physical stats (especially pace) compared to the rest of the league as well as work rate, aggression & pretty good passing. But my team lack flair & decision making.

We already have a pressing forward leading the line so it makes sense to employ a high pressing system - a 433 is a great formation to do this as the front 3 allow you to press the entire width of the pitch.

I've also got very good tacklers at the club so I'll use the get stuck in instruction and both of my CBs have pretty good marking and heading, so I'll defend narrow and force the opposition teams out wide to my fullbacks who are primarily defensive players.

I am employing a split block - what this means is I set the pressing trigger to standard & individually tell my front 5 players to press more. This allows me to pressure the opposition high up the pitch but provides more stability at the back against posession systems & wont draw my defenders out of position as much. Its a good balance of risk, especially with my team who are top 10 quality compared to the rest of the league but not amazing.

    Out of posession

Because I am playing a high press, aggressive style of defending a complimentary attacking style would be to counter. Win the ball, transition fast & hit the opposition on the break. I lack players up front who are physical or big enough to hold the ball up and win headers so I'll need a fluid system based around short passing but quick & direct enough to counter quickly.

My team are good dribblers so I select run at defence - it also compliments my style of play. Typically teams will leave gaps that I can instruct my players to run into with the ball at feet, draw a defender out of position & play a quick pass to start the counter.

Tempo high - passing short as previously explained - I want my team to play direct, quick passing but not to go long because I have no aerial threat up front.

    In possession

In transition we select Counter press - to press immediately after losing the ball. I can get away with this because I always have 4 players in defensive positions. If my DM was a Regista for example, or my fullbacks were attacking its risky to play counter press as lots of my team will be in advanced positions unable to counter press unless they win the ball back in their defensive line. For more aggressive tactics I leave this unchecked, or tell them to regroup before pressing again.

Counter to tell the team to play the ball forward as soon as its won & distribute quickly to take advantage of our pace and dribbling.

    In transition

And now we have the basis of my tactic.

    The tactic

I like to have a support goalscorer just incase my number 9 has a bad game. The best player for this role in my team is my IF so I play him on attack to take advantage of his finishing - his build up play is not very good here so I want him to play direct and make runs in behind.

Unfortunately a DLP or number 10 would work superbly here to thread balls to my 2 goalscorers but like I explained I lack those players at the club - but Luperini is good enough to play quick balls in transition so I choose a CM(A) to make him penetrate space & play the final ball. on a PI I tell him to take more risks to make this happen.

I usually dont play a winger without an aerial threat but I lack options in the RW position - but I make sure to tell my team to play low crosses.

My midfield 3 are all good all rounders, and I want both CMs to push forward. A BBM to support makes sense here as we want penetration but too much will cause our DM to have to deal with too many threats, and we already have Luperini bombing forward.

A straightforward BWM(D) behind the front 2 to engage ball carriers in the middle third of the pitch, win the ball back and lay it off to Luperini & provide a screen to the back 4.

The defense is my weakest area of the team - both CBs are fine defensively but cannot pass so no BPDs here. My fullbacks are really fast but aren't very good going forward. So I make sure to not be too creative with my back 4 and play solid defensive football.

Because of my defensive back 4, with a DM on a defensive role I can be quite aggressive with the rest of my team. If I had one fullback on an attacking role, I may change the BBM to a CM(S) to help with balance.

    With these roles I believe I have the following boxes checked;

    1. Penetration (Players making advanced runs into the box)
    2. Attacking support (Stationary roles to receive a pass from a failed attack to recycle possession)
    3. Defensive cover (Players positioned defensively behind the attackers to cover against counter attacks)
    4. Creativity (Players making risky passes)
    5. Stretching play (Width in attack to stretch the oppositions defensive line)

Without penetration you will struggle to score - there will be noone in the box to pass to. Without attacking support when your attack breaks down the opposition will always win the second ball back. Without defensive cover your opposition can play a few passes and score easily. Without creativity noone will take any risks and you'll end up losing 3-0 with 75% posession. Without enough stretching play your attack will be too narrow and easy to defend.

So the theory is in place, how does the tactic do in my first game?

    The first game

    First game

We win 3-1 in a comfortable performance with nearly 4x the xG of my opponent. I am very happy with this performance. The tactic worked exactly as I'd hoped - solid at the back, fast transitional play and my IF & number 9 penetrating in behind to score goals.

Fella, Brunori & Luparini all score and link up brilliantly playing passes to each other all game. The opposition hardly had any clear cut chances and scored from a brilliant ball from their keeper straight to their striker who cut inside and finished top corner. Nothing tactically contributed to that.

In build up play I saw my defense pass to my midfield 3 who carried the ball forward then played a pass to Fella or Brunori. Luperini was often there sitting on the edge of the box to play another ball back in or shoot himself.

    Build up

We caught them on the break constantly and threatened all game. The tactic worked very well and with some minor tweaks I believe I can win the league with a team odds on to finish 8th.

I think I have just been FMed hard, but this does takes us to 15 games unbeaten in the league, we are 2 points off Blackburn who are in a playoff spot and we're playing them next! Thanks to you guy's help yesterday, I have completely turned my season around, from 16th to being in playoff contention!

What teams in your save are your bogey teams

Not necessarily your Man U's or other giants but teams that you really should be beating but inexplicably end up on the losing side.

I'll start - here's the recent result of my annual home game against Bournemouth

    A short story…

    Posted: 14 Mar 2022 05:57 AM PDT

Does this game cheat? It sure feels like it's manipulating RNG.

    Posted: 14 Mar 2022 07:58 PM PDT

Just finished my 5th game on the run that I've either received a random straight red card (happened twice after six seasons without a single one and no change to tactics), conceded a goal from the opposition's only shot on target, and/or have not scored a single goal from a ~2.5 xg. I understand the AI can adapt to playing styles, but this feels way beyond that.

Does anyone know if FM manipulates RNG to create an artificial sense of challenge, or am I just salty af?

I have signed a player who demanded that I strengthen the midfield. So I bought a midfielder (squad player) just for him and he still got angry and now wants to leave (who wants to leave because of that reason? you can be upset but not leave).
