My Pentagon Challenge - Part 1

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 01:41 AM PDT

My Pentagon Challenge - Part 1

After skipping a few editions from FM18, and not instantly gelling with a few high budget club saves I made with my shiny new FM21, I came across the Pentagon Challenge. For those that haven't heard of it, the idea is to start with no coaching badges, Sunday League experience and no job, and win all 5 continental Champions League competitions.

    Starting Attributes

After a random nationality selection and a search of typical Gabonese names, André Bongo Ondimba was ready to go. I initially loaded in the South African league (the only African league in the game), and all Asian leagues, with all European and American leagues set to view only as it would be a few years before I head there. Following a short period of failed applications, it was finally there. My first contract offer. I set off to Hong Kong with high hopes, ready to gain some coaching badges, some Chinese proficiency, some reputation, and who knows maybe a trophy or two. 104 days later we were relegated and I was sacked.

1 cup tie victory and 6 league defeats would never be enough to keep my job

Reflecting on my failure, I decided the tentative counter attacking football I served up at Southern District wouldn't do moving forward. Brave attacking football was the order, and Churchill Brothers in Goa was the place I was going to implement it.

When I arrived, the league season was over, but we had a cup quarter final coming up. Though I managed to scrape through the two leg affair on penalties, a defeat in the semi final first leg left us out of the cup and ready for a solid off season preparing for the new campaign. Having quickly realised in my disastrous tenure in Hong Kong that signing foreign nationals isn't the smartest move in low budget Asian leagues, I set about snapping up local talent o free transfers to bolster my squad. We set off into the new season with high hopes, and a board asking us for a mid table finish.

    A trip to India

In the season opening Durand Cup, a semi final against lower league opposition, and similar opponents awaiting us in the final, seemed like a golden opportunity to start the season with a bang, but a defeat on penalties in the semi left us with a bitter taste in our mouths. This was quickly put aside however - 8 wins and 2 draws from the first 10 league games, conceding in only 2 matches left us flying high at the top of the league, to everyone surprise! Back to back defeats were followed by another 3 wins on the trot, but then the AFC Champions League group stage began.

Regular mid week defeats took its toll on the squad as we started to lose confidence, and our form in the league suffered drastically. Eventually we would finish 2nd, 7 points off the title, with a strong sense of what could have been. By this point the club was also in severe debt, despite my careful wage budget control, and couldn't afford to send me on any further coaching courses beyond the National C I had already completed. I decided to play out the season ending Confederation Cup and head for pastures new.

Twin 2-1 victories over league champions Kerela FC put me in the final, and I had a chance for my first trophy in my last game in India. Punjab took the lead after 39 minutes but CB instantly roared back with an equaliser just a minute later, Honduran star Clayvan Zuniga netting for us. A tight and tempestuous second half followed, with 3 booking for my team as we fought to try and get a winner. Extra time followed and the nerves for the better of me and my team. Punjabs 17 year old star in the making Parveen Boro scored the winner, and ensured I would leave the sub continent as I arrived. Trophyless. The next day, with one month left on my contract, I announced my resignation. Two runners up medals and a semi final penalty defeat left me looking back on my tenure wondering what could have been.

A frustrating season of what ifs and debt

This is turning into a wall of text, but if anyone finds it in any way interesting I'll make follow ups.

    My Australian Beauty

Currently in my 14th season at Rangers on a quest to make the Scottish PL the best league and I had to share this player. He's not extraordinary in terms of stats but the story is great. After losing my two world class strikers after they forced their way out of the club I was scrambling.

Randomly I see Dortmund transfer listing this 22 y.o. with solid stats for 22.5mil. Determined to not have my player force their way out with a short contract, I locked him down on a 5 year deal with a 3 year optional extension clause.

Since then "Unambitious" has been my favorite trait. Everyone else throws a fit when an EPL club comes for them but not Robinson, despite being world class and constantly having teams declare interest in him. Even if he ever asks for a new contract, its his agent asking and he never asks for a salary bump. The perfect servant for the club.

Part 3 Managing the “toughest” club in FM (AFC Turris-Oltul Turnu Magurele)

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 01:14 AM PDT

    Part 3 Managing the

Welcome back to part 3 of this series, this time I have played a few more matches to show you and have come up with a tactic that works with the below par players I have.

Last time I had played 6 games and had 4 points from them (1 win and 1 draw) This time I have played 7 games more, so over 1/3 of the season is played, and it have been surprising.

GW 9 Politehnica Iasi- Turris 0-2 (Politehnica lasi predicted to finish 4th)

Politehnica Iasi missed a penalty in the 6th minute and I thought we were going to get absolutely destroyed, but somehow we scored 2 goals before half-time and some how held the lead all of second half, and with 2 draws in the previous rounds, the high hopes of this save where back.

Romanian cup: Uriena slobozia - Turris 4-2

Back down to earth again, we got absolutely killed, we only grabbed a late goal to make the result look more even, but we where played out in every way possible, lucky he board doesn't really care about the cup, and I'm fine with having less games, and focusing more on the league.

GW 11 ASU Poli timisoara - Turris 1-1 (ASU Poli timisoara predicted finish 5th)

I don't know what it is, but away from home we just preform, this game was one of those games, eventho we only had 7 away fans?!? We controlled the game for large periods, we got a goal in the 45th minute, only for them to get a penalty in the 90th really unlucky not to get 3 point, but we should be happy even getting points from a team so much better then us.

    https://preview.redd.it/lpcw5h71vbm71.png?width=643&format=png&auto=webp&s=3da63f72eae73c2d46801117310762465d730090

This leaves the league table to look like this, with us having 12 points from 13 games so on track for my 30 points in 30 games, and with a sizeable gap to the lowest placed teams.

    Tactic

I have done some tweaking, and some of your comments have also helped me get to this tactic, the 5 at the back gives us more cover against a better team, but yes it leaves our striker very alone, and very dependent on the wingers to be on attacking and getting further up the pitch. If we have a chance of getting points or we are facing a worse team than us, I will chance to a 4-4-2 to get more attacking possibility, and that's how we have scored most of our goals.

Other than that, I don't really have any more updates related to the save, but I have another update.

Some of you have commented you wanted to see this save in a Youtube video, and I was a little hesitant to do that, because I have never recorded me playing FM before, but the positive feedback and fact that so many of you were hooked and invested in this challenge already from post one, convinced me to make a channel and make a couple of episodes.I will admit the quality is far from perfect, but it's a learning experience for me, so the small mistakes will be changed and the quality will be better the more episodes I make.

I hope you will give it a watch, I will continue to make posts about the save also, but the videos give a more in depth knowledge of the save.

Have a lovely day, and I will se you in post 4 or on Youtube.

What is the highest bid you’ve ever received for a player?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 08:40 AM PDT

I can't remember mine exactly, but it was around 150-180m pounds up front for my best ever regen. I made a post about him before so you can check out this attributes if you want.

I'm curious to see how far the AI will go when making a bid for a real manager.
