As a italiano, ive always played the game in italian, so for me terms like Libero, Regista or Trequartista are familar...but you know whats the meaning of that words? Not the duties, but the actual word! Italian language is stupidly hard, so ill try to be as clear as possible. I dont know if could be interesting, but in gonna explain them in details!

Libero (Lee-Beh-Ro) Literal Translation: (Someone who is) Free Real Italian Word?: Yeah, is very common, like "free" in english
Catenaccio (Ca-tena-cho) Literal Translation: A big/strong chain Real Italian Word?: Mmm no, we use Catena (chain) and Catenina (Gold Chain), and all of the variants of Catena, but no one say Catenaccio out of football conversations.
Regista (Reh-gee-sta) Literal Translation: Film/television Director Real Italian Word?: Yes, it means only that btw, for other sports like basket we use Playmaker (or short version Play). Pirlo I miss you so much.
Mezzala (Meh-Zala) Literal Translation: Half(Mezza) Wing(Ala) Real Italian Word?: No, only related to football, we use Mezzo/a and Ala but not together.
Trequartista (Treh-Cuartee-Sta) Literal Translation: Someone who work in the third quarter (3/4 is tre/quarti) Real Italian Word?: Hell no, we only say Trequarti Campo (The pitch's third quarter). Also there is no differce beetween an Advanced Playmaker or a Trequartista in italian...we all say Trequartista...or very uncommonly Regista Avanzato.

At the end Calcio. Means "Kick" but im sure you all known that. Also for that reason for me isnt so strange hear Soccer, becuse in Italy "Football" is related to the American sport. Here we have Rugby, not football.

But a lot of old Italian teams were founded by English groups! Like my city team Genoa, that is named Genoa (the Italian name of the city is Genova) Cricket and Football Club...yeah...cricket...its so fun, no one in italy play cricket!
