Weekly Help Thread - Ask your help requests here | Week Commencing 18/07/2021

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:36 AM PDT

Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

Also, please remember that the team suggestion thread can be found in the sidebar, so please use that and give your suggestions to people there too!

How Football Manager almost got me a job

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 01:23 PM PDT

The year was 2017 and i was in my second year of my two year masters in Economics programme. Now in India, there a common thing called placement drives where different companies come to the institute itself and recruit.

So there is this company CRIF, a MNC which is spread across the globe. They work in analytics and customer solutions basically. 130 of us applied and the first round was a general Group Discussion round. 55 of us went to the next round. We were then divided into 5 groups of 11 each and then we were given role play situations. What happened next was the most interesting part.

Our group of 11 were sub divided into two sub-groups and we would role play as two rival agencies. The person interviewing us (he is the head of CRIF in India) would role play as the owner of.... A football club that was once big but is now doing badly and making losses. And we had to pitch to him solutions. I told my friends that i got this. They had to trust me because i played a video game where i basically do what we had been asked. They may have thought I am mad but they did support me.

So I made lot of points, gave him a structured and a 10 year plan of Firstly making the club financially stable for which out of everything, he would have to let go of some players who had become financial dead weight. He then asked, "But they're fan favourites." I replied, "we would make new ones. Given that your club's performances are not that great." This was one point he wanted to use to grill us ( after all albeit being imaginary, this was a test). He said "I am not entirely sold on your solutions. My previous agency had suggested me quite frankly, opposite things." I countered, "If it had worked sir, why are you here then? I strongly believe in what I said and let's make your football club great once more."

All 6 of us made through to the final round before interviews.

Sadly this was my elimination round. I didn't do something wrong as such. He asked me a question which was a trick question and nobody had answered it the last time he was at our university but I did because i knew the answer. So, he asked me to approach it in a mathematical, pragmatic way and I did but it took me some time. Interestingly i wasn't chosen for the interview although some people were chosen who had rounded of the figure (it was a question of mensuration so you would understand how wrong rounding a length can be). Had I got the job, I would have owed it to Football Manager. But even through the rejection, I still owe it to the game, for the two members of our 6-member group who got the job ultimately.

I guess in football you must be an anxiety ridden mess to be good.

The one unique thing you do in your FM games

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:06 AM PDT

I believe FM is the one game where each player enjoys in his own way and I have seen and discussed with different people that "strange" or "unique" thing they do in their saves.

I will start. I do something I call the "careerverse", at the end of each season I save as and create a different file and I label it Save X v01 etc and then I continue playing it normally. After many seasons when I reach my goals (promotion to the highest division, championship, european cup) I go back in time in the same save seasons ago and play it again making different decisions like using different tactics, signing or keeping different players, leaving the training to assistant manager, getting a director of football and so on. I also do this when offers from other teams arrive, I create one save where I accept the offer and one where I reject it and then see how the AI did with my team compared to me.

So I would love to hear what is the one thing you do in your saves.

I needed Barca to loose their last 2 games (against Real Madrid & Sevilla) and a 7 goal swing at the last day of the season to win the league. I got both. This tops every FM moment I ever had. Bryan Gil, have my children. Luis Bilbao, fuck you, I nearly shat myself after you scored. I love this game
