A very personal change that I think could make FM interesting:

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 05:09 PM PDT

One thing I don't really like about FM is that whenever I start a career say with my favorite team, Liverpool, I automatically replace Jurgen Klopp with my character. I think what could be cool would be an option that allows you to start a career with a certain boss at their current team, i.e. become Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and play out the rest of his career. You could start with a preloaded FM tactic and if you say drastically change the way a manager plays it could lead to crazy questions from the press etc. It could be cool to say control David Moyes and fully amend your failed jobs and wrongs by bringing West Ham to glory, or become Poch and return to Spurs to save them, or things along those lines. I think it could be a cool change rather than just using your personal character, because yes I could make myself into Jurgen Klopp, but I'd have to do edits in the database to remove the AI Klopp that's automatically a free agent then.

AC Kajaani: The Team That Doesn't Exist

AC Kajaani: The Team That Doesn't Exist

Earlier this year, I was looking for a new team to make my annual attempt at National Hero with. I'd made previous attempts with Halifax Town, Stockport County, Aldershot, East Fife, and others in the British football pyramids, and I thought it was time to try something different. I knew a guy from Finland once, but I knew essentially nothing about Finnish football, so I loaded up FM21 and looked up the teams in the Finnish first division. After looking through all the teams, I picked the one with the best looking shirts: AC Kajaani.

    AC Kajaani logo

The first season was a bit of an adjustment. The league had a salary minimum of £250/week for full-time players, yet my team had a salary maximum of £275/week, so there was very little wiggle room available--the player either accepted the money or they didn't. My wage budget was approximately £2000/week, so I didn't even have the wages to offer full-time salaries to my entire first team. Several players on my team were under contract at £0/week, who would need to be renewed. Free agents threw themselves at me who appeared to be significantly better than any of my players; I bought some of them. The free agents I bought (e.g. Miikka Oinonen) ended up being fairly trash, and the players I had who I thought were trash developed into stars fairly quickly.

Furthermore, there was no prize money at the end of the season; the league provided absolutely no money to the team whatsoever. The team's only significant source of income was its sponsorships, and AC Kajaani's sponsorships were trash. I ignored the wage budget and my board chair simply did not care, spending around £4000/week.

The board expected me to barely avoid relegation, and that's exactly what I did. I avoided relegation by winning the last game of the season, 1-0; the team I played was my relegation competition; a loss would have relegated me.

    2020 Table

Following that season, I became more invested in AC Kajaani and decided to look up information about the team. That's when it hit me: the team didn't exist. I found their team homepage and got a page error. I checked all the football news sources I could find and the team apparently existed, but little information existed about them. Finally, I looked up some Finnish news sources and used Google Translate, and that's how I got their story.

In 2006, a local factory-owner and football fan named Arvo Toivainen was disappointed by the lack of quality football available in his small town of Kajaani, population 36,000, north of the arctic circle. So he contacted all of the local football teams and asked them to merge their operations, so that a united Kajaani team could make some noise on the national Finnish football pyramid. He managed to get two of them to sign on to his plan, while the third team, Kajaanin Haka opted to continue doing it solo.

Following the merger, Toivainen invested his personal wealth into the team in order to make it a success. They bought players from all over to try and succeed. The result? They finished second four years in a row, missing out on the promotion playoffs each time. To make matters worse, Kajaanin Haka had beaten them to promotion out of the Third Division. But finally in 2011, the team won promotion by completing an invicible season, with only one draw. They made it two consecutive promotions in 2012, making it all the way to the First Division... where AC Kajaani was quickly given a reality check and got punted back down to the Second Division.

Toivainen was undeterred and invested even more money into the team. After three more near-misses, finishing third each time, AC Kajaani won promotion in 2017 and was back in the First Division. The first two seasons in the First Division, Kajaani barely avoided relegation, so Toivainen threw even more money at the team, and in an effort to get Kajaani promoted to the Finnish Premier League, he bumped them up to the second-highest wage bill in the league.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. All the player turnover led to a team that did not work well together, and on the last day of the season, AC Kajaani was relegated despite winning.

Following the season, Toivainen asked local businesses for a few hundred thousand euros in sponsorships in order to get the team back up to the First Division. After an earnest public drive for sponsorships, the team did not meet the required investment goal, so at a meeting in December 2020, the team folded. The team had no debt, but Arvo Toivainen had spent his entire wealth on the team and had nothing left to give; and without an income source, how was the team going to continue?

With the collapse of the team, one newspaper criticized Toivainen for spending all his money on free agents instead of investing in local youth facilities that could have improved Kajaani's football scene more cost-effectively. In reply, a team fan wrote back: "some rich people spend their money on yachts; others on fancy cars. Arvo Toivainen decided to spend his money on football, and all of us were winners."

With this newfound knowledge, my AC Kajaani save took on newfound meaning. If I got this team relegated, they would cease operations and it would be over. I exiled my free agent signings to the academy, and focused on the team Toivainen had given me at the start of the game, developing them and turning them into the best that they could be.

    2021 Promotion Group table

The 2021 season was everything I could have hoped for. Kult, Bibaku, Pitkanen, and Kytila turned into stars. My team finished second in the promotion group stage, won the semi-final, and missed out on the league title by two points. In the promotion playoff final, I faced TPS across two legs. After a very promising 3-3 away draw in the first leg, in which my team came back from a 0-2 halftime deficit, I watched in disappointment as they fell to a toothless 0-1 home defeat, despite beating them on xG 0.47-0.16. (Okay, yeah, they were pretty toothless that game.)

2022 Promotion Group table. Klubi 04 couldn't be promoted because they were the B team of HJK.

The next season was much of the same. I bought a new midfield and finished 3rd, and lost in the promotion playoff semi-final, some heartbreaking games. I even had Arvo Toivainen retire in December 2022 and get replaced by another board chair. It was a little jarring to see him retire, but it didn't matter--I was still going to get this team promoted for him. He needed to see his dream come true.

For 2023, Rovaniemi Palloseura getting relegated into my league for that third season was quite annoying, as they had a significantly higher budget and were 1-91 favourites to win the league. I gave trials to many free agents, as that was the only source of international scouting available to me; the good ones I either signed, or someone else signed before I could. While the season didn't go exactly as planned, I had an opportunity on the last day of the season to win the title, as I was playing Rovaniemi, and a win would see me crowned champion, as I was three points behind them and was ahead of them on goal differential.

    The final game.

They scored because I knew that a win was the only outcome for me and I did everything I could to get that one goal I needed. It was a shame. I then lost the promotion group semi-final to Grankulla IFK, and found myself stuck in the First Division, once again.

    2023 Promotion Group table.

The 2024 season started out with a second kit sponsorship, for the first time in this save, boosting my wage budget to £4000/week for the first time, and helping the club out of a little bit of modest debt. With the increased budget came increased expectations--the board chair wanted me to finish no lower than second. Initially, things went according to plan: I started the season 4-4-0. Unfortunately, that season the team that got relegated from the Premier League was Inter Turku, one of the stronger teams in the Premier League, who were last relegated in 1997. They were 1-91 odds (again!) to win the title. They were basically Sunderland in League One, except if Sunderland was run competently.

2024 season preview, viewed after the season

I attempted to beat them in the ninth game, away, in order to keep my invincible season alive. I did all my homework, and I made all the preparations. What happened? The ref gave them three penalties before halftime, en route to a 4-1 defeat. I actually out xG'd them if you subtract the penalties. I was furious.

My team subsequently went on another seven-game undefeated streak (3 wins, 4 draws), before running into a poor three game stretch (2 losses, 1 draw) which dropped us down to fourth in the table, and that's when I was summoned in by the board chair. He was not happy we were in fourth, and he was giving me a points target (can you imagine the audacity?), three games before the end of the season. He wanted 9 points in the next 5 games, and at least one of those games was going to be against Inter Turku, if not two depending on how the promotion playoff schedule went.

I dug in deep. I held a team meeting, which went poorly. I praised every player who deserved praise, and I scolded all the players that I could get away with scolding. I also reverted to a 4-3-3 narrow gegenpress. I'd used that tactic in rotation with a 4-4-2 counter and a 4-1-2-3 wing-play tactic all season long, and the gegenpress had actually been my least successful tactic all season long, resulting in a lot of 0-0 draws; but in previous seasons, I'd used the 4-3-3 to great effect--that is, before the other teams started adjusting to it.

The result? I played the 11th place team at home and won 7-1, which was the record victory in the First Division. One of my players got red carded at 23 minutes, when we were up 2-0, but I kept the team attacking and they rewarded me. Following the game the other team's manager was fired. Also following the game, the board chair sends me an email saying that I had 6 points to get in 4 games, and it didn't look like I was going to get there.

    The 7-1 game.

The next game was the long-awaited revenge game against Inter Turku, at home. Despite starting with an early goal and peppering the other team with shots, it ended in a 1-1 draw. A moral victory, I suppose, but I'd wanted more. The board chair send another email saying that 5 points in 3 games was looking like a tough target for me to reach. The third game was an away 1-1 draw against the third-place team in the league, FC Haka.

Then something happened during the transition from the First Division to the First Division Promotion Group Stage, and the points target glitched out. I won the first game 4-2, and then the board chair said that I needed one win in the next two games in order to keep my job. The next two games were against FC Haka and Inter Turku, both at home. My players dug in and got me a 3-0 win against Haka and a 1-1 draw against Inter Turku when they gave up a late goal. The board chair emailed me to tell me that I'd scored 11 points in 5 games, and that they were letting me keep my job.

At the end of the promotion group stage, I ended up third, surpassing Haka on points. I beat Haka in the quarterfinal, and faced TPV in the semi-final. TPV had beat me in the promotion group stage 1-2, and now I had to play in their stadium again. It was a real bruiser of a game. They had a disallowed goal on offsides in the 31st minute, and another disallowed goal at 90+1. My starting right back got injured in the 63rd minute. It was perhaps the most exciting 0-0 draw I'd ever seen, with TPV beating me on xG 1.80-1.27. But this was a promotion playoff game, so after 30 minutes of extra time with my players absolutely dragging, it went to a shootout. My first player missed, and the next eight players all scored. But their fifth shooter missed, and I scored, and it went to sudden death. The next eight shooters all scored, and it went all the way to their tenth shooter, who shot into the arms of my goalkeeper to decide the match.

Nothing like the nerves of a shootout.

I had to wait a couple of weeks for the Premier League season to finish for the promotion final, which was against Ilves. I scouted their last match, but I still had very little information about them, due to the limitations of my scouting budget. For the first match, my starting LB was suspended due to yellow cards, but my backup LB made matters worse when he got red-carded in the 21st minute. I decided to repeat the strategy of staying on the offensive despite being down a player, and the strategy almost worked, racking up an xG of 0.97; but in the 91st minute, they were awarded a garbage penalty, and won the first match 1-0.

In the second match, at home, I was stunned to discover that four of my players were suspended for the match--the red card guy, but also my starting ball-winning midfielder, my starting right-back, and my best centre-back. My starting line-up was the worst it had been all season, with one academy defender making their professional debut and other players playing out of position. But two of my original players came through--Tomi Kult scored in the 27th minute, and Bibaku scored at 45+3, and it was never in doubt the rest of the way, as AC Kajaani got promoted to the Premier League.

    Promotion!

There it is, Arvo Toivainen. It might not have happened in real life, but I got your team promoted to the Premier League.

    Football Manager can be antidepressant.

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 07:28 AM PDT

All I like part of the game is I can take initiative. Taking the right transfer, deciding position, duty and role gives pleasure. I improved observing, making decisions, and taking risk skills. By the way, Patience is improved if you manage a team in the lower league division.

I am diagnosed with anxiety. I've been struggling with my anxiety with Football Manager and I have overcome generally. Sometimes, I am nervous and exciting and when these times happen, I play Football Manager. So I focus easily to think for what I do or patience. For example, yesterday I call my crush, she didn't respond, I decided to wait for call back. During waiting, I played FM. It made me calm down. After 15 minutes or something, She call back and we talked. I talked calmly. There are a lot of examples like this.

I can take initiative and responsibility. I can take risks and I admit my mistakes. I say easily I am wrong if I realize the wrong. I proceed step by step when I do something. I learned from Football Manager and Championship Manager.

and the most important situation is that I became familiar with English. I played CM, I was thirteen or something and there was no my native language option at that time in the Game. So I learned English and improved.

My Romania Team were the Surprise Package at WC 2026... making the final. Had to put on a Shirt and Tie for the Occasion!

My group was me, China, and Canada. After dispatching them both 3-0 and 3-2 respectively, I moved onto the second round. Came against Colombia, who I beat 1-0 thanks to a Dennis Man screamer. Then I was drawn against Germany, who I beat on penalties after having only 6 shots all game. In the Quarter Finals, I pushed Spain to extra time before also dispatching of them on penalties. Then the Semis. The Italian Giant. In the first ten minutes against Italy, I suffered 8 shots on my goal. Ionut Radu keeping me in the game multiple times. Then, after a traditional 'Demand More' shout, I see a highlight starting with an Italy free kick. I put my head in my hands, expecting our tournament to end. I look up five seconds later to see none other than Dennis Man through on goal, who proceeds to slot it into the bottom left corner. 1-0 into half time. Cut to 60 minutes and the stalemate resumes, until Emerson gives away a surprise penalty. Up steps Florinel Coman, who sends Donnarumma the wrong way to put us 2-0 up. Despite numerous more highlights during injury time, we cling on to meet England in the final. It's about midnight as I write this and I have never felt more passion in a Football Manager game.

Just wanted to say, as an Englishman, It's coming home.

    To Bucharest.

    Defending with shit-tier teams

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 07:52 PM PDT

Is anyone else having huge problems to defend in lower tiers? I'm currently managing a team somewhere in the 3rd Danish League and no matter with how many at the back I play or no matter how i try to press, I always concede and I've had the same problem with a save where I managed a 6th tier English side. Normally I'm actually quite comfortable with conceding no goals when I'm playing with "normal" teams, but for me it's impossible to get clean sheets with non professional teams.

Does anyone here have some advise? Would be greatly appreciated.
