They may take our lives, but they'll never take our football! - A Football Manager Story

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:40 AM PDT

In the leadup to the 2020/2021 season Ajax took a risk in hiring ex-Scotland player, 27 year old William Wallace to his first managerial role. As a player he had found a place on the field controlling possession and picking out key passes. This was a style that he wanted to bring to his managerial career, and Ajax appeared to be the perfect fit.

William Wallace was not only tasked with the task of bringing Ajax up to the level of the elite teams in Europe, he was tasked with doing it with Dutch talent! The board feared the stories of South American Wonderkids diluting the talent pool of the top teams, they wanted to stick to their roots and train local talent to get to the top.

Upon arrival at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Wallace started to implement a 433 Vertical Tiki-Taka system, a formation known well to the Dutch, and the Johan Cruijff ArenA especially. And the search for Dutch talent began. As with any new manager, Wallace started to clear out players that didn't fit his vision of the future, and began the search for fresh blood.

First order of business was a Goalkeeper. Due to the unfortunate suspension of Ajax's star in Onana, someone was needed to hold the line. Maarten Vandevoordt was Wallace's choice. Although not Dutch, he was certainly going to do the job, and hopefully be a good investment for the future. Other big names were Teun Koopmeiners, Wesley Hoedt and Denzel Dumfries. These 3 Dutch players were brought in to bring a stable base to the team, and were to play alongside Daley Blind - the new team captain and fast friend of Wallace.

With such a turnover in their first season, not much was expected of this Ajax team. They managed to scrape a Champion's League spot by finishing 2nd in the league though, which was definitely going to help grow their reputation and bank balance.

Over the next couple of seasons, players came and went and Ajax began to dominate Holland. Winning the Eredivisie in 2022 and 2023, and this is where we'll take our next look at the team.

Wallace's form of Vertical Tiki-Taka was definitely beginning to take root on the training ground, and was certainly working wonders in the youth teams. In fact the U18s won the 2023 UEFA Youth League, showing Wallace's dedication to growing youth talent and heavily investing in the facilities and staff to reach their potential.

It was here that Wallace made a move he had been planning for a while. The return of an Ajax wonderkid, and the largest transfer Ajax had ever brought in. The return of Justin Kluivert for £63 million made the fans excited for the years to come. He was to work alongside David Neres and the latest star through Ajax's youth team Michael De Moor - a young star from Belgium. These 3 as the attacking force at Ajax were a sight to be seen, and made the opposition defence look stationary with their runs and passes. But Wallace wasn't done yet. Koopmeiners wanted to try his luck in England, and made the move to Arsenal. This unexpected transfer gave Wallace the funds to bring back yet another Ajax Academy product in Donny van de Beek! Working alongside Ryan Gravenberch in midfield, this partnership was really going to help supply the 3 attacking players. Now, not be forgotten a certain Daley Blind was still working his trade in defense, slightly reduced duty lead to him sharing play time with Wesley Hoedt and another new Ajax youth player David Hidayat.

So, now we have a team in form, full of promising talent and proven stars. This was the time for Wallace to strike. Drawn against Barcelona, Celtic and RB Leipzig in the Champion's League, the fans knew they were in with a chance to progress, a draw and a loss against Barcelona definitely gave everyone hope of what was to come, and they made it out of the group stage. Working their way past Dortmund and Bayern, Ajax had made it further than they had in a long time. But now they had to make it past Man Utd. The first leg finished 2-0 to Man Utd at Old Trafford, things were looking bleak. The fans had faith that the home leg at the Johan Cruijff ArenA would be a good one. With Donny van de Beek talking in the media about the pressures of going against his former club, everyone was a little nervous. But thanks to a dominant display by the midfield pairing of van de Beek and Gravenberch, the front 3 were supplied with enough chances to win the game 3-0! It was on to Wembley, and time to face Barcelona again. This time, the team were in form and had played an entire season together. A packed Wembley bore witness to Ajax demolishing Barcelona 3-1, and European glory was once again brought back to Holland.

This however, isn't the end of our tale. With success comes transfer requests, and the Eredivisie isn't the shining pinnacle of club football of other European leagues. Over the next 5 years, Wallace struggled to keep a stable core of top talent and had to rely on the wheeling and dealing of non-Dutch wonderkids to raise the bank balance required to build another European star team.

Ajax managed to remain dominant in Holland, winning the Eredivisie and KNVB Beker 5 years in a row. And so we come to the 2029/2030 season. Daley Blind is now cemented as Wallace's right hand man, and the team has been growing the Dutch talent pool and the bank balance. Sadly European success has been lacking, with only one decent run ending in a demolition job in the final at the hands of Chelsea.

Due to his success domestically, Wallace was also handed the keys to the national team. This allowed him further insight into the top Dutch players, and to build relationships that he could use to strengthen his Ajax team. Some more big signings in Matthijs de Ligt and Mohamed Taabouni for a total of £300 million definitely caused a stir. It was now or never for Wallace, spending that big had brought the eyes of UEFA's Financial Fair Play to Ajax, and they needed to make it work or struggle to meet the requirements.

The 2029/2030 season got off to a decent start, and Ajax continued to sit at the top of the pile. But this year, Feyenoord were hot on their heels, consistently 1 point behind. Through the January transfer window, some of the depth players were sold for big profits to keep out of the troubled water of Financial Fair Play, but it left the top talent of Ajax a bit thin on the ground. As the season went on, and fatigue started to take effect a decision had to be made. Key players were rested for Eredivisie games to keep them fit and healthy for the Champions League, and this had a noticeable effect on results. Although success continued in Europe, 3 draws and 2 losses meant that Feyenoord were in the top spot.

In Europe, Ajax had to fight their way past Barcelona - again - plus PSG and Bayern, but they managed to make it to the final again. This time their opponent was Hertha Berlin - 3 times winner of the Bundesliga in recent years - and the battleground was Athens.

After 90 minutes, the score was 1-1 and a knackered Ajax had not looked the better side. As extra time began, tired legs meant an injury to an Ajax fan favourite in striker Carlo Van der Meer. Wallace pulled out his ace in the hole, Justin Kluivert returning from injury took up position as the False Nine. Time continued to tick by, but in the 117th minute, Kluivert found the back of the net! Ajax were champions of Europe again! And this time, with a team made entirely of players holding Dutch nationality.

Amsterdam was riding high on the success of Ajax, but the year wasn't done yet. It was also the year of the 2030 World Cup to be held in England. There were calls of favouritism thrown at Wallace when his squad was announced. 13 of the 23 man roster were Ajax players. But how could he deny the stars that had just won the Champions League?

Holland were handed a relatively easy group, and worked their way past New Zealand and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fortune continued to favour Holland as they made it past Ghana in the knockouts, but then…. Spain. The number 1 ranked team in the world were their next opponents. Somehow, Holland managed to tear their way through the best team in the world and beat them 4-1! Was this their year? Was this what they had all been hoping for?

Croatia, and Argentina fell to the Oranje and the date was set for the final against Portugal at Wembley, the site where some of this Dutch squad had won their first Champions League. The media had Portugal as clear favourites, and tension was rife in the Dutch camp. A long, hard season was taking it's toll on some of the players, and there were a few knocks throughout the team.

A nervous start to the game drew an own goal from a Portuguese defender, and Holland went in at half time 1-0 up, but not looking strong. Portugal had clearly had an earful at half-time and scored an equaliser quickly in the 2nd half. This appeared to put a fire behind Holland, and they started playing some of the best football of their lives, creating chances left and right, but nothing was finding the net. As time drew on, it was looking like 90 minutes wasn't going to be enough, when a strike from Arie Vaags - a midfielder for the Champions League winning Ajax side - found the net, was that going to be enough? Well, ex-PSV and current Valencia player Donyell Malen wasn't going to wait to find out, and blasted another past the Portuguese keeper! Holland had done it! They had won the World Cup!

In 10 years, William Wallace had taken a well regarded, but mostly unsuccessful Ajax team, and turned them in to double Champions League winners, and he had taken the Dutch national side to the unknown heights of winning the World Cup.

Next on the agenda? Bringing up the reputation of the Dutch domestic game. For too long, the Eredivisie has been looked down on by the top leagues in Europe. It was time to show them how dominant Holland really could be.
