Tell me about the one step in your career you regret.

I was managing Trabzonspor in the Turkish league taking them back from the brink of relegation to knocking at European cup within four good years.

Halfway trough the season the club gets taken over by a new consortium and I get the message, we are evaluation the situation and will decide in the near future what will happen to your position....or similar.

You SoB, that is what I get, I avoid your new purchase ending up in the 2nd league, I won the cup twice in four years (first time poor luck and some great goaltending during the penalty shoot out) and you will now evaluate my position.

Three days later Parma comes calling, would I be interested coaching in the Italian league?

Oh yes I would, yes lets have a interview.

I ace the interview, I get offered the job and then I was asked if I wanted to start now or in the next season.

I checked Parma, they were in no-mans land at that time, to good to get relegated however not good enough to challenge for a European spot and I was challenging Trabzonpsor for the title

Ok lets start next season...... and all went to shit.

Receive message, "As you are leaving you are no longer able to sign or terminate any contract be it player, coaches or U18 players.

Ok we should be fine with the squad I have assembled......Next thing I know Director of Football wants to suck up to the new Board and decides to get some cash in. So he sells our best LB and the DM who was the heart and soul of my team for FUXXING peanuts to the dollar? He then sells two of my more experienced and successful Strikers and in return brought in crap.

I lose three coaches and a scout because they are all approached with better offers and I am unable to stop them from leaving, they do not get replaced so Moral plummets because of crappy training.

At the end of the season I end up ninth and can't wait to get the hell out of dodge city to arrive in Parma and to realize that four out of seven Defenders have left the club, 11 players are on long term loans and CANNOT be recalled and for the money we are paying in wages you would think that we have Juventus, Manu and Bayerns combined payroll however only the quality of Norwich and Duisburg in player quality.

My tactics do not work, I loose the first five games get four more points out of the next five games and then have my meeting with the Board where I am am told that out of the next five games I need eight points.

After loosing the next three games I decide to be a step ahead and resign from my position.

And that ladies and gentleman is the story how I went from challenging for the title to managing Empoli F.C. in the 2nd Italian League.

How I became a football manager in real life.

    Posted:

As an avid football manager player, one of my dreams has been to actually take a football team to glory in real life. Sure it's great to have won the Champions League with Metropolitan Police, but can you coach a couple of people to win your local tournament? The first things first, the team I coached was my platoon team in my NYSC Inter-platoon tournament. Confused? Let me explain with a bit of back story. I finished university in October 2020 and had my Convocation ceremony last December. In Nigeria where I live, every university graduate whether foreign-trained or local-trained must perform a year of national service as long as they graduated before they turn 30. This one year starts with a 3 week orientation camp in a state you have been deployed to work in. Once you are deployed, you complete your registration at the camp and you are assigned an ID number. the last number of that ID is the platoon you belong to e.g. ID 1201 belongs to platoon 1. I was assigned to Platoon 7 when I entered camp on the 12th of March 2021. I normally play football and originally wanted to play for my platoon, so when the platoon's sports director asked for football players I wrote my name down. Our first training session was scheduled for 2 pm on the 15th of March 2021. From the first kick of the ball it is absolute chaos. To begin with it's not even training session more of a football match between two teams of 5 playing with stones for goalposts. There's no actual style of play, just people literally running around. I try to dictate play with short passes but my teammates end up dribbling the ball and losing it or shooting aimlessly. We have a match in three days against platoon 5 and if we go into the game like this we've got no hope at all. At least I think I'm one of the best players in the team even if my natural fitness and stamina would be rated a 4 at best.

The next day I wake up with a muscle strain in my left thigh. It's not bad but I cannot run or train with it. I let my sports director, Ezekiel, know I'll be out for the game and he says no problem. We have training but again it's another run and shoot match. I watch on glumly from behind the goalpost. Another platoon is playing on the other side of the pitch and they look just as clueless. Maybe not all hope is lost. Later that night, the idea hits me. I watch a lot of football, I play a lot of tiki-taka football at home, and I play with the gegenpress on Football Manager. With multiple Champions League trophies won with Arsenal in my current save durely I could try and coach these players? It's not like there's anyone doing it now. The more I think about it, the more it seems like it's my destiny. I see the fact my thigh still hurts by the next day that I need to start managing the team. I speak to Ezekiel about it and he agrees. I immediately begin looking at the training drills. if we have any hope of going far in this tournament we need to get everyone on track. I immediately make it clear that training is mandatory for everyone who wants to play in the match. We get a good turnout and we start playing the 5 aside game again, but this time I insist on players passing the ball on the ground, dribbling less and opening up to receive passes. Ezekiel is one of the more natural players at this possession-basef style of play and slowly but surely the game starts to resemble something close to a football match. Another player named Uche shows promise, his off the ball movement, passing and vision all show promise and he has incredible fitness. A defender named Mazi also catches the eye. His composure and passing make for good viewing. At the end of training I feel we have a good chance of winning our game. I then begin to plan out our formation, a classic 4-2-3-1 with Ezekiel and Uche as the CMs on DLP and BBM roles, Mazi as our Ball Playing CB. I tell the players the lineup will be ready by the next day and discuss with Ezekiel our tactics. There is a match between platoons 3 and 6 and I decide to watch and see what we may be up against in the future. Due to the fact there are 10 platoons, the format is a bit weird. There are 5 matches in round one and the 5 winners advance to the quarterfinals with the 3 best losers. As I watch the match, there's an issue that I realize changes the dynamic of the whole tournament. The teams only have 8 outfield players, meaning I have to change my tactics. At the end of the game platoon 3 advance after winning 4-3 on penalties. Platoon 6 will probably advance as best losers. Next are Platoon 10 and 9 with platoon 9 winning 2-0, practically knocking platoon 10 out. I immediately confer with Ezekiel who is practically assistant manager at this point and we look at our options. I want to use a 3-4-1 formation with one center back to help us maintain possession and not get overrun in the midfield. Ezekiel wants to go with a safer approach and use a 4-1-3 formation with the full backs supporting the midfield. I decide to go along with his formation only to prove to everyone why it is a bad idea. The players don't mind this especially as I haven't released the lineup yet. The next day is matchday and it's my managerial debut. I'm nervous but excited at the same time. I put on a special jersey from my Dad. I will wear this for all my football matches from this point onwards. The match is scheduled for 5 pm so I have the team out by 4 pm warming up. This is after platoon 8 and platoon 2 play out a 1-0 win in favour of platoon 2. After collecting the jerseys and registering my list of players I drop my lineup.(I will also write here my star rating for each player)

    GK - Rukevwe 4 RB - Tamilore 3 CB - Mazi 4 CB - Kabir 4 LB - Nonso 2.5 CM - Uche 3.5 RW - Samuel 4.5 LW - Godson 5 ST - Afolabi 3

    Bench Lawrence - GK - 3.5 Obi - ST - 3 Tolu - ST - 2 Ezekiel - CM - 4.5 Destiny - ??? Andrew - ??? Eke Banana - ??? Ayomide - ???

The players with question marks are those who did not show up to training at all and so I have no idea as to their ability. Normally missing training would be a fineable offence but when we haven't been paid it doesn't seem fair at all. The players look ready to start so I give a quick team talk about playing the ball on the ground and the works. Next I talk to each player on their roles in the formation with a hand on the shoulder or a handshake or fist bump. The players go onto the pitch and I say a quick prayer before the kick-off. From the first whistle we get absolutely battered in the midfield. The two midfielders of the opposition instantly outman Uche all on his own because, surprise surprise, the fullbacks don't provide the support for the midfield. Afolabi drops off once or twice but is mostly aloof except for one shot that goes wide. if it was football manager, you'd see the "that was brilliant by player x, it deserved a goal at the end of it" commentary. I feel bad for Nonso, the opposition just lump long ball after long ball to the winger on his side and he cannot cope, either due to a low jumping reach or the fact he's 5"4. I need the half time break and soon. Rukevwe makes one or two saves and keeps us in the contest. The ref blows for half time and I give the players water I bought with my own money. That's something FM doesn't teach you I guess. I encourage the players and immediately remove Nonso for Ezekiel, changing to my 3-4-1 with Tamilore shifting to a hybrid of RB and RCB. At this point there is some unrest on the bench as some of the players who didn't train want to play. I remind them of my policy but they still complain. From the go in the second half we look much better going forward, not just because of how good Ezekiel is, but because we now have a stronger midfield. Afolabi still struggles but now we have a lot more of the ball and our wingers are starting to do damage. Then the trouble starts. Tamilore doesn't mark his man tightly and he ghosts past him. Mazi makes the tackle but the ball bounces back to their winger who one on one, finishes high into the roof of the net. Platoon 5's bench goes berserk, running onto the pitch. I try to encourage the players and those on the bench begin coaching the players on the pitch while still grumbling about not playing. Credit to the players, they continue fighting and we take a few shots the keeper saves. Mazi goes close from a corner and Samuel fires wide. But we get another chance from a corner. Samuel plays it short to Godson, who takes a touch and crosses into the box. The ball passes over everyone and into the net. I run onto the pitch as we all celebrate the goal. I demand more from the players as platoon 5 restart play. 30 seconds later, the same winger who scored their first restores their lead with some shocking defending. Tamilore fails to get a foot in, Mazi's challenge is feeble and once again he smashes it past Rukevwe. I'm stunned silent and make a double change, Obi and Destiny on for Afolabi and Uche. I instruct Obi to hold up play and Destiny who has spent half the match complaining to help control the midfield and carry the ball forward. As soon as he enters, he instantly transforms our play. His pinpoint passing, his silky dribbling and flair leave the opponents in the dust. We begin to get chances. Ezekiel drops a spectacular trivela pass to Obi who fires a tame shot at the keeper from 10 yards out. Time is running out and I urge our players forward. Obi gets the ball and plays a pass to Godson. He runs into the opposition box and is hauled to the ground. I scream, the players on the pitch and the bench scream for a penalty. The ref points to the spot. Mazi takes the ball. Do I know if he can take penalties. He took a few before the match and scored. I make the sign of the cross as the ref blows his whistle. Mazi rolls up his socks and prepares to take it......

He fires it bottom corner. The problem is, the keeper also goes to the same corner and saves the shot. Two minutes later the referee blows for full time. The players are demoralized. I struggle to hold the team talk, telling them we still progress as one of the best losers. Several players leave. Destiny takes an issue with my team selection and I have a chat with him to resolve it. His morale is improved which will be important for future games. Uche speaks to the ref and confirms we go through, but just by the skin of our teeth. The nex day Platoon 4 and 1 play and platoon 1 wins 2-1. We've reached the quarterfinals but by the skin of our teeth.

And I have a cracked voice after all the shouts I gave today.

The only thing more intense than winning a title race is surviving a relegation battle.

Managing Pro Vercelli, finally reached the Serie A. Our squad had little to no changes compared to the previous year, and we are favorites to go down. Despite that, we start well, with a home win against recently promoted SPAL and a draw against Napoli on the road. However, things start going south quickly. From september to october have 1 draw and 6 losses, with 3 goals scored versus 16 conceded. We break the streak in november against Parma but that doesn't last long. We continue sucking and after 19 league games we have pathetic 10 points.

At that point I say 'fuck it". Mantaining last season's playstyle, a slow, low block focused on possession and set pieces simply didn't work in the top flight. Time to cut the DM, push those defensive lines all the way up to my opponent's face, and replace my gigantic CBs with shorter ones who actually have SOME passing capability. If we go down we at least go down shooting.

The first game after the tactical overhaul is a draw against SPAL, not optimal but the performance is encouraging. We then beat freaking Napoli at home, suffer a painful 92th minute loss against Atalanta, but come back beating Sassuolo convincingly. Sure, we lose the next 3 games but the performance is better. Some other teams also start to slip consistently.

We then manage to draw against both Juventus and Inter, and then defeat Parma. We are nearly outside the relegation zone.

April arrives. A decisive month with only teams at 11th place or below. We end up with 8 points out of 15, and we escape the drop zone after a very long time. We are later humiliated by Lazio but it's okay since the other crappy teams also lose. Finally, we face equally crappy Chievo, in a direct battle for survival with only 3 games to go.

5 minutes in, my best defender gifts them a goal after a horrible pass. The first half ends and I do the FM20 equivalent of throwing water bottles.

We draw level quickly, and 15 minutes later we score again. 2-1. I IMMEDIATELY switch my striker for a DM. We are going to park the bus. Well, that was the plan at first, but of course they score from a corner in the next minute.

We come back to being offensive and that same DM we put on the field before scores his first goal for the club off a corner. We then manage to hold them off. A 30 yards shot hitting the crossbar at the 94th min is the last heart attack I have before the ref ends it. With results from elsewhere, we confirm our place in the Serie A for another season.

Now here I am, typing this with 2 games left to go, satisfied af due to my tactical decisions working, and staring at that beautiful TV money coming for another year.

Please feel free to share similar stories. These kinds of seasons are always nerve wrecking and cool to listen to.
