    Hi r/footballmanagergames

    I'm reasonably new to FM. I picked it up around the new year and have logged about 750 hours of game time so far. This puts me in a position where I now feel like I know which way is up, but I'm not so used to the game that I'm doing things automatically. That puts me in a unique spot to offer tips to other new players on how to get the most out of your saves. So, I thought I'd start a series of posts here on things I figure out that I haven't seen other places in the hopes that I'll shorten the adoption curve of others new to the game.

    I'm also American, which presents some unique challenges. Being used to MLS transfer windows, roster rules, and the like, I'm starting with little context on the European game mechanics. So, hopefully, I'll be able to especially help my fellow North Americans who lack some basic context that is important. Hopefully most of you Euros on here won't find my seemingly obvious revelations here annoying. Please understand that Americans love the game too, but we haven't grown up with the European mechanics so sorting basic things like transfer windows and contracts can be challenging when you think in terms of American football roster mgt.

    On to tip #1:

    I've made extensive use of the Team Depth Chart to keep my arms around the roster. But, after playing a few seasons I kept getting the impression that the current and potential star ratings of my guys didn't exactly match up with my impressions of their game play. Then, I noticed the Opinion Of select box at the top of the screen. One of my assistants was chosen as the default. So, then I went into the Staff menu, clicked on Coaching Team, and sorted my staff based on Judging Player Ability and Judging Player Potential. What I found was that my Head of Youth Development was far and away my best evaluator of talent. I went back to the Team Depth Chart, changed the Opinion Of to him, and magically the talent evaluations much more closely matched my own impressions. The assistant I had been using had been feeding me bad data for three seasons!

    Hope that helps, and if this is well-received there will be many more tips for us newbies to come.
