If you're looking for a good young defender with terrific potential, you could try this guy - Bright Arey Mbi. Got him from Bayern for just under a million for my Utrecht Team. I play him as a full back. Has been great thus far. Anybody tried him yet??

Players from academies in real life as comparison to youth intakes in Football Manager on the example of Chelsea FC

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:19 AM PST

This whole analysis came up from a discussion under one of posts where OP was disappointed with poor quality youth intake. After /u/Lockiges_Brusthaar comment about how unrealistic are FM youth intakes and as an example he pointed out Chelsea FC with their recent youngster in their senior squad.

At first I wanted to make it just a comment but when I dug up through the topic I've decided to make it separate post so it can reach more people on this sub.

First of all I've take under analysis players that were listed on Transfermarkt in Chelsea FC, U-23, U-19 and U-18 squads. I scrolled through all of them and checked:

    • How many players came from other clubs
    • How many players came from Chelsea academy (I mean the youngest tier, not players that were poached as teenagers but those who are listed that came from Chelsea Youth team)
    • From players from Chelsea academy I've decided to make another separation and count how many players come from cities that are further from London. I made an assumption that players from other cities were possibly poached from other academies. I know it may be wrong, people might be born in different city and then moved to London or can be just like Mason Mount taken to academy as they were as young as six. Even if my assumption some of you might find wrong I thought that it would be nice to show how many academy players are from outside of Great London.

So here we go. Here are the numbers:

    U-23

    Number of players: 19

Players from other clubs: 8 (42%)

Players from Chelsea academies: 11 (58%)

Players from academy but from outside Great London: 5 (45% - % of academy players from point above)

    U-19

    Number of players: 15

Players from other clubs: 6 (40%)

Players from Chelsea academies: 9 (60%)

Players from academy but from outside Great London: 3 (30%)

    U-18

    Number of players: 25

Players from other clubs: 13 (52%)

Players from Chelsea academies: 12 (48%)

Players from academy but from outside Great London: 2 (16%)

    Chelsea FC Senior Squad

    Number of players: 28

Players from other clubs: 23 (82%)

Players from Chelsea academies: 5 (18%)

Players from academy but from outside Great London: 0 - this need an explanation. Since first squad players are relatively known I could check their past and even those who were not from London were training in Chelsea academy from very young age so I've decided to count them as 'true' academy intakes.

As you can see number of players from Chelsea academy in younger teams varies from 48 to 60%.

In senior squad so at top football level we have 5 academy players at this moment. One was born in 2000, two of them were born in 1999 and other two in 1997 so we can assume they were from 3 different 'intakes'.

Players that are 21yo still have time for proper development but if we make an assumption that club has at least 15 players per year as their youth intake and we assume that players up to 30yo should be still able to play at top level it shows that Chelsea had 10 youth intakes (players born from 1990 to 1999) so around 150 youngster and from that 4 players (2,67%) reached senior squad and are still playing in Chelsea FC.

Yes, this doesn't count players that left the club but I didn't have time to check all the players that left Chelsea FC and are still playing in senior squads of teams from top 5 leagues in Europe. If anyone is willing to check this I would gladly add this information to the post.

In my opinion it only shows how hard it is for a big team as Chelsea to come up with players able to play on really top level of football.

So whenever you think that your youth intake seems unrealistic because you don't have any world class player think how many top tier teams have their true club grown players in their first team.

Hope you had good time reading this. If you'll be interested in more content I could try checking another team with similar criteria to see how it's going for other big clubs.

Cheers everyone and have a nice day!

"Luton" is in carabao Cup Finals, they are 20th in championship. They have beaten likes of Chelsea and Wolves to reach the Finals. I have decided to play with 10 of my u23 players to balance out the strength and play it fair. It feels good when a smaller reputation team achieve such feat.

Well, that was slightly mental. Following on from earlier, my Aberdeen side have pulled off the double, but only after a bad-tempered insane final with Celtic. A game that is the manifestation of my rivalry with Neil Lennon.

Your proposed changes to the clubs vision need to be torn up and started again.

The issue we have with your proposal is your unrealistic belief that we can become a top-half team in the Premier League by the end of the 2031/32 season.

What the heck is this crap?! I also lost most of the dressing room for insinuating that we wouldn't be in a relegation fight.
