Newcastle will play Champions League while being in the Championship

The year is 2026 and Lionel Messi wants to go to West Brom (currently in Championship). I always knew he wanted to do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke.

So infuriating to get criticised for “paying over the odds” for a player who starts the save already at club on loan and joining the following summer.

It took 15 years and 250 in-game hours, but I've managed to win the Europa League with Welsh side Carmarthen

Best save I've ever had and definitely my best achievement in FM.

Brief recap of the save. Getting to the top of Wales isn't too hard. Carmarthen start in the 2nd tier but they are by far the best team there, good enough for the top division. Won promotion easily, then finished 2nd in the Premier League the next year. Since then, we've won 13 titles straight.

We've slowly been improving year on year, making the CL group stage 5 times, EL groups twice and ECL twice. I've used the prize money to max out all our facilities, youth coaching and youth recruitment and invest in the best coaches possible. Our reputation is still really low (2.5 stars) so I've struggled to attract top quality players. Instead, I've snapped up all the best cheap regens and developed them myself. Also had some good youth intakes.

As an added challenge, I've only been using British and Irish players. The Welsh league has produced some amazing regens for me. If you're playing a lower league save and have Wales loaded, I'd recommend looking at TNS, Barry, Connahs Quay and Cardiff Met. You can sign their players for peanuts and I've had some class players from them.

Got some bargains from Ireland and Northern Ireland too. Scotland and England are a bit harder to get young players from, but I've got some good ones from Carlisle, Merthyr Town, Partick Thistle and Queen of the South for less than £1 mil. In the early years, pretty much all of my signings came in on a free from lower league clubs.

Some years have been a struggle as our best players didn't want to stay and I was forced to sell them for very little. The best player I've had at the club is now at Man City and we sold him for just £12,000. Also sold players to Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves, Brighton, Porto and Lazio. Now we're a bit more established and the finances are in a really good shape, I can convince them to stay. My best striker isn't even interested in discussing terms with Dortmund.

As for this season, we crashed out of the Champions League after an embarrassing loss to Dundalk in the qualifying rounds. We beat Galatasaray to qualify for the Europa groups. Got drawn with Nice, Sturm Graz and Lech. Won the group with 5 wins and a draw. Then we beat Levante, Celtic and Reading in the knockout rounds to reach the final.

Somehow managed to come back from 2-0 down. Amazing comeback. Amazing result.

We're still miles away from winning the Champions League. But, the team is very young and improving all the time, so I hope it won't take another 250 hours. Thanks for reading, feel free to AMA.

    Edit: Here's the tactics:

1st season in 2.Liga after promotion, tiny salary total (we're broke) and we just won the play-off for promotion to Bundesliga. Going to be hard to stay up!

10 years into FM21 with Liverpool and so far the best regens I've stumbled across in my save seem to be defenders. Anyone else getting insane defenders in 21 compared to other positions? Here's my favorites I've acquired so far.

Hey! Does anyone use real pen and paper to jot down notes for Football manager (tactics, transfer plans)? If so, does anyone have any pictures of their note books with notes so I can see examples? Cheers :)

How to improve at tactic creation? (for someone who isn’t a complete novice)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:15 PM PST

I more than understand the basics. I'm very knowledgeable on football and pretty well versed in tactics.

However, when it comes to FM, my logic rarely leads to effectiveness on the pitch.

Is there a guide anywhere that doesn't treat me like I'm a 3 year old, but goes a step further than explaining the basics and talks about how to create space, beat a low block, counter attack, etc.?

    Thanks in advance.
