    I'm absolutely devastated IRL

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:21 AM PST

Hi guys, long time lurker, never posted before but this time I really have to.

I've been playing CM/FM games for a very long time (since CM0102) but I would never consider myself a "pro player". I've never achieved full road to glory or invented a nice tactics. Although I'm not good at FM it's still my main game to play (huge football fan).

Few weeks ago I bought FM21. My first save is always LLM so I picked Hungerford Town from National League South in England. According to season preview it was the worst team in the league. In my first season I managed to finished 2nd and lost in playoffs (simple 442 or 4411, direct passes etc.). Yesterday I was finishing 2nd season. I'd say the boys made progress (we were unbeaten for 18 games and had best defense in league for most of the time). I was at the top of the table head to head with Dartford and Dulwich Hamlet. Thanks to my amazing strikers we managed to reach 1st place 2 games before season end. And this happened...away game with Havant & Something (cant recall the name, sorry H&V fans I'm obviously not English). We were losing 1-nil around 60 min then we managed to score two goals (one of which was an incredible screamer from my defensive midfielder). And then the biggest rollercoaster in my managerial career: they get to 2-2. We responded with two Mourinho's counterattacks and it's 4-2 (80th minute) and I'm really started to believe this might be the season. Then within 4 (!!!) minutes they scored 4 goals. We lost 4-6, my morale is SHATTERED, I'm pissed at my defenders and have absolutely 0 will to live. My wife entered the living room and caught me crying. I couldn't sleep the whole night and now I'm a zombie in my work. Also I decided not to extend my contract with Hungerford and looking for a new job. I just can't work there anymore. This save is going to haunt me.

Thanks for reading - I have 0 friends who play FM who could understand me.

What is your ideal journeyman career?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:57 PM PST

    For me:

Start at Colorado Rapids youth team (where I am irl) 2020 (28)

I invest in Basildon United (English 8th tier) in exchange for becoming manager. Get sacked after 1 year but keep them from relegation. 2022

Go back to Colorado, manage the U-23 rapids team, I'm good friends with the guy who started them, and I have Carlos Valderrama's phone number and he used to play here, so he will be my assman. 2023

I manage the Rapids 1st team for 18months then leave to take over at hometown team Southend United in the Vanarama National league, I bring them back up to league 2 and finish mid-table the next season. 2025

I leave southend to join Ipswich, where I played when I was 10, who are struggling in League 1. I help them to promotion after 2 seasons. Following a difficult start in the championship I get fired. 2027

I move to Sunderland in league 1 aiming to repeat my promotion success with Ipswich. I get them promoted the 1st season. I get fired with Sunderland 18th in the championship in November. 2028

I join RC Lens, struggling in the French 1st division in February and keep them up on a 6month deal that doesn't get renewed. 2029

I join Auxerre in the French Ligue 2 and get them promoted, but leave that summer. 2030

I join Portsmouth in the Championship in October, keep them up, sign 2 or 3 Bulgarians in January that make a big difference. 2031

I leave Portsmouth after my 18 month contract is up and join Arminia Bielefeld in Bundesliga, I keep them up for 2 years and the premier league comes calling. I show interest in moving, it doesn't go through but I fall out with the Bielefeld board and agree to mutual termination. 2033

I take the CSKA Sofia job and help them get into Europa league group stage, win the league, and then qualify for champions league group stage where we lose every match. 2035

I leave after 2 seasons to join Panathinaikos, where I finish 3rd in my first season and fail to get into Europe, but win the league my 2nd season and get into champions league, where I win all my home matches, but lose all the away fixtures and get knocked out in the group. 2037

I leave to join Dynamo Kyiv, citing my success in Bulgaria and Greece to convince the board I can topple Shakhtar. I win the league in my first season, and reach the 1st knockout round of champ league. Win the league 2nd season and quarter final of champ league. Finish 2nd in my 3rd season, lose in the qualifiers for champ league and get fired. 2040 (48)

I return to Germany to manage Stuttgart, helping them to two consecutive 5th place finishes and unremarkable Europa league runs. 2042

I join Fulham, my favorite club since I saw them play when I was 5 in 1997, on my 50th birthday in 2042. I stay here for 25 years, not winning much, but being stable and entertaining, maybe win the FA cup once or twice, a few European excursions. On September 25, 2066 I beat Chelsea away on the 1000 yr anniversary of the Battle of Stamford Bridge. We go on to win the league and cup double, I die of a heart attack celebrating the cup final.

    FM themed sports bar/room

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:59 PM PST

So basically to sum it up quickly, I would like some help finding a Stuttgart home shirt preferably from the season 18/19.

To expand some more, I'm planning on buy in some decorations now, whilst saving to buy my first house. As it will be just me and my girlfriend and we are looking into 3 bedroom houses, there will be our room, a spare room and a room that needs claiming. So my plan is to claim it for myself, to watch football games in, but I wanted to theme it. So what better way to theme it than FM and Liverpool. My idea is to get shirts of clubs from my favourite saves and print the names of my best regen on the back, and frame them with my achievements from the save (job history tab) and the regen's story (bio) written next to that. I have planned to buy a Bidvest Wits (South Africa) top and have the bio prepared. But my best save from FM was at (for the best period) Stuttgart in Germany. I started at Derry, moved to Bayern II, Blackpool, then Stuttgart where I stayed for a few seasons before moving to Liverpool (my team) to cap off the save nicely. The regen i chose was a German LW, Josef Gerland, who I signed from Leverkusen at Stuttgart and brought him straight to Liverpool (summing to £95mil i spent on him) and when the career ended he had played 136 games, scored 113 goals and laid on 69 assists under my management (he was only 21 when I stopped the save, might I add). As I spent the most time with Stuttgart (as did Gerland, despite only actually spending 2 years) I've decided a Stuttgart shirt would be most appropriate and as it was FM19, Stuttgart season 18/19. If anyone can help me find a top (as I can only find them for £70+) I'd appreciate it so much.

Below is the noted summary of the save and Gerland himself.

Stuttgart (Save end 2nd August 2025)

Derry 2018 Irish Premier Division 2nd (manager of the month x2) 2019 IPD 1st* (Irish Presidents Cup) (manager of the month x2) FC Bayern II 2019/20 3.Liga 1st (3.Liga) (manager of the year) Blackpool 2020/21 L1 11thjoined 14 games, 24th (manager of the month) VfB Stuttgart 2021/22 BL 3rd (manager of the year) 2022/23 BL 1st (Bundesliga, German Cup) 2023/24 BL 1st (Bundesliga, German Supercup) (manager of the year) Liverpool 2024/25 EPL 1st (CS, CC, EPL, UEL) (manager of the year, manager of the month x7)

Josef Gerland (7, 10) VfB Stuttgart legend Josef Gerland is truly one of world football's global superstars. Gerland made his senior debut in the German Cup, playing for Bayer 04 against Ballingry on 16th August 2021. Gerland made a flying start to his career, managing to score on his debut. Having made his Germany debut against Mexico in March 2023, he has gone on to make 24 appearance and score 10 goals for his country. Gerland, 21, joined Liverpool from VfB Stuttgart for a fee of £60mil in 2024.

Josef Gerland started his career at Bayer 04 Leverkusn in October 2015, breaking into the first team in 2021 and making a total of 13 league appearances and 4 league goals for the club. During his time with Germany U19S and Bayer Leverkusen, Gerland's team lifted the European U19 Championship in 2020 and the Bundesliga in 2022. In July 2022 he joined VfB Stuttgart for £27.5mil and made 61 league appearances and scored 45 goals. During his time with Die Schwaben, Gerland's team lifted the German Supercup in 2023, the German Cup in 2023 and won the Bundesliga in 2023 and 2024.

Gerland joined current club Liverpool for £60mil in June 2024 and has currently made 34 league appearances and scored 33 league goals for the club. Gerland has so far lifted the English Community Shield in 2024, the Carabao Cup in 2025, win the Euro Cup in 2025 and the English Premier Division in 2025.

Among the 10 winner's medals that Gerland has collected during his career are: Germany Supercup (VfB Stuttgart 2023), English Community Shield (Liverpool 2024), Carabao Cup (Liverpool 2025), German Cup (VfB Stuttgart 2023), Euro Cup (Liverpool 2025), European U19 Championship (Germany U19's 2020), Bundesliga (Bayer 04 2022, VfB Stuttgart 2023 and 2024), and English Premier Division (Liverpool 2025).

Gerland gas been recognised for his talent and achievements with several awardd: Named Euro U19 Championship Best Player 3rd place, won the German U19 Players of the year, German Footballer of the Year on two occasions, German Players' Player of the Year on two occasions, German Players' Newcomer of the Year, World U21 Footballer of the Year on two occasions, European Golden Boy on 2 occasions, European Champions League Golden Boot, European Champions Cup Midfielder of the Season runner-up, won the European Golden Shoe, World Footballer of the Year, World Golden Ball, World Player of the Year, English Footballer of the Year, English Players' Player of the Year, English Premier Division Top Goalscorer, English Players' Young Player of the Year, Euro Cup Player of the Season runner-up and won the Best Player in Europe.

A short story on the overwhelming guilt of retiring a club legend

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:24 AM PST

I've been lucky enough to have a number of club legends over the years, and one was my German striker Rafal Kondracki. Bought for £44m when he was around 23, he was a phenomenal striker who averaged over a goal a game for me. And it was on the European scene where he totally dominated, averaging 1.5 goals per game which was quite frankly ridiculous. He also bagged a record 74 goals for me in one season across all competitions (which also led to his one and only Ballon d'Or). In all, he had around 430 goals in 400 appearances in all competitions. As I say, a real club legend.

After extending his contract for one final season, he turned 34 and was starting to phase out of my team. He was still quite clearly world class, but I had a few other players who were now playing even better than him, and I wanted to give chances to a few youngsters too, so it was time to let him leave and get one final paycheque at another club. I didn't want him fading into the obscurity of my reserves: he deserved better.

Right at the end of the season, I realised he was now available for a testimonial. I'm sentimental enough to feel he deserved it, but due to clubs going on holiday, I had to wait until pre-season to schedule the testimonial.

I kept him on a rolling contract until the testimonial at the end of July (contract expired a month earlier) and then released him, reluctantly, a few days later. (I imagine that we had discussed this was the plan with him, so he wasn't too downheartened. Plus he made an extra £1m in wages during that time, so a nice little pay-off!)

Normally when my players have left the club immediately at the end of their contract at this sort of age, they've had a number of suitors lined up and ready to sign them. As I say, Kondracki was still world class; simply he was ageing too much for me to continually play him. Unfortunately - and I'm not sure if it's a glitch in the game - by keeping him on a rolling contract for an extra month and then releasing him, he had absolutely zero suitors. Nothing, zilch, nada.

A few weeks later, he hung up his boots and retired.

I feel as though my decision to keep him on for a few extra weeks - with the best of intentions - somehow glitched the game in to making him unwanted, when I can guarantee he could've still cut the mustard at a top European club.

What also makes me feel worse, is that that summer had been the World Cup. Despite being a starter for the German national team for years - and having played all through the qualifiers - he was cut from the final squad. So what should have been his final World Cup appearance, followed by one final challenge at a new club to wind down his career, all disappeared into obscurity. And the last, heartbreaking moment? He finished on 99 caps.

I've never written a post on this thread like this before. (Based on this, some of you might hope I don't ever again haha!). But here's to you, Rafal Kondracki. I'm sorry if I let you down.

    A non-European journeyman story (#02)

    Previous parts:

    A non-European journeyman story (#01)

    2022/23

    Transfer & Pre-season

Last year we surprisingly finished 3rd and qualified for the Asian Champions League playoff, so I believed, that with right additions to the squad we could potentially fight for the title. We brought in 8 new players during the summer, most notable were Iraqi centre-back Maytham Jabbar, who already had some caps for senior NT and a Senegalese midfielder Ngalla Cissé. We also signed another left-back in January, since our first choice got injured for 5 months. This turned to be a great decision, since our second left-back broke his ankle two months later as well.

Even though I don't pay much attention to the pre-season games and I let my assistant to coach them, this pre-season was one of the best we had in terms of results. Not only we won our 8 games, not only we won each by at least 3 goals, but we also beat Al-Shorta and Al-Quwa, which were the 2 teams, that finished ahead of us last year, so this gave me further hope, that we can fight for some silverware this year.

    Dawri Al-Nohkba (Iraqi 1st division)

Based on media predictions we were predicted to finish 4th. After last year, when they predicted, that we would finish 11th, I was hoping we could these exceed these expectations again. And we started well, beating Zakho 8-0 in our first game (even better than our start to the previous season, when we won our first game 7-0) and Amanat 4-1 away.

Although we drew next 2 out of 3 games, we bounced back with a 7-game win streak with combined score 23:4 and took the lead after 12 games. Unfortunately we lost another title contender, Al-Shorta, who we beat in the pre-season. This loss knocked us back a little and we went through a small inconsistent phase, during which we lost points with two mid-table teams and just barely beat last team in the table Al-Kahrabaa 1-0 and a newly promoted Karkh 4-3.

With new year incoming, we got back on the track and won against Al-Quwa 3-1 in the first game of 2023, which put us back in the lead of the league after 18 matches. This game gave us confidence back and in the next 3 months we lost only one league game, and even though it was again loss against Al-Shorta, we built comfortable lead in front of our rivals.

At this point it was almost sure we would be celebrating title and it was just question of when it will be mathematically confirmed. In the end we won the first title in club's history with 3 games to go. We had the best offense (102 goals scored) and the best defense (33 goals conceded). Our best player was again Shibab Razzak Farhan, who even improved on his last season's 30 goals tally and scored 36 league goals in 36 appearances. Faisal Kadhem also had amazing season with league's best 17 assists, here you can see rest of the squad review.

    First half of the season

    Second half of the season

    League Table

    Iraqi FA Cup

FA Cup wasn't our main priority, but of course I wanted to do well in all competitions to boost my reputation as soon as possible. Although we improved on our last year's performance, when we lost in the first round, we got knocked out in the quarterfinals. But it has to be said, that this game was in the middle of a hectic schedule, when we played a match 3 days before in the Champions League and 2 days before a league game.

    AFC Champions League

Since AFC Champions League is played in a spring-autumn format, opposite to our league format, we had to wait for our first game until the end of January 2023. We started in a playoff game against Indian side Bengaluru FC, who surprisingly knocked an Emirati side with much larger budget then both of us. Bengaluru almost surprised us too, but after an early conceded goal we turned the game around and after 2-1 win we qualified for the group stage.

We were put together with Iranian Tractor SC, Qatari Al-Gharafa and Tajik Istiqlol. First two teams were the group favorites as their leagues are more reputable and as such they have much larger budgets. Fortunately there is a limit of 4 foreign players (only 3 of them non-Asian), which should benefit smaller teams like us. However only one team is guaranteed qualification for the second round + 6 of the best 2nd placed teams (out of 10 groups).

For the first game we traveled to Qatar and we got rude awakening, as we were down 3 goals after 15 minutes. We scored 2 goals back, but we couldn't equalise. We got on track in our second game, beating Istiqlol, but lost at home against Tractor and our chances to qualify were close to zero, especially after we lost crucial points away in Tajikistan after conceding in the 92nd minute.

At this point we were almost eliminated, but things got interesting. We won 4-0 against Al-Gharafa and since Istiqlol beat Tractor, we were only 3 points behind Tractor before our game in Iran. We had to win by 3 goals (or by two if we won 4-2 or more) to finish first. At least that's what I initially thought. Istiqlol had the same amount of points as us and if both we and them won our last game, there would be a 3-way tie between us, Istiqlol and Tractor.

We were better than Tractor in the last game, but couldn't break the deadlock. Meanwhile Istiqlol took the lead against Al-Gharafa and jumped us for 2nd. We took the lead against Tractor in the 70th minute, for some reason jumped to 1st place even with worse GD than Tractor, but they equalised few minutes later, putting us back to the 3rd place. We threw everything forward, and it paid off, we scored in the 85th minute and added 3rd goal in the 90th, which meant we actually won the group, with 3 teams on the same amount of points. Funnily enough, Tractor qualified as well, as one of the best 2nd placed teams.

Last matchday in the group stage

In the first knockout round we were matched against Saudi side Al-Ahli, in which we were heavy outsiders. However we took an early lead in the 1st minute, which probably shocked Saudis, as we controlled the game and won 2-0. In the second leg Al-Ahli played much better, they even scored twice, but luckily for us, both goals were offside. With every passing minute it looked more and more likely, that we will go through, and after we scored from 88th minute counter-attack, it was confirmed, that we will get between 8 of the best Asian teams.

    https://preview.redd.it/rn8rqxabgcb61.png?width=1349&format=png&auto=webp&s=654d03a037fc39e18a6e6d3413551228bb8ab592

Amazing result, but we'll have to wait for the quarterfinals until late August, which I'm bit concerned, since the first leg will be our first competitive match in the new season. At least it will be against a familiar side, as we were drawn against our group stage opponents, Tractor SC.

    https://preview.redd.it/2lke8i8ogcb61.png?width=1357&format=png&auto=webp&s=4926b3563a2944c7722ce87a51fa4cdbc3852097

    Summary

Amazing season, after which I originally planned to leave Al-Hedood and not extend my contract. However after getting through to the quarterfinals of the ACL, I just had to sign an extension, but most likely I'll stay with the team until we get knocked from Champions League, after that I'll try to find myself a team in a better league with a better chance for a continental success (even though we are on amazing run, I can't see us winning the ACL, as all the other teams are qualitatively much better).

Season Team Domestic League National Cup Continental cups
    2020/21 Al-Hedood (Iraq)1 16th (37 points) Quarterfinals2 None
    2021/22 Al-Hedood (Iraq) 3rd (75 points) First round None
    2022/23 Al-Hedood (Iraq) 1st (92 points) Quarterfinals Quarterfinals3

1 - Joined the team during the season in March 2021 with 6 games to go

2 - Haven't managed the team before they got knocked out

3 - As the competition runs a different format, quarterfinals are played in late summer 2023 (season 2023/24, so we are still in the competition

Is this a bug in the game? If so is it fixable in the editor?
