Absolute madness in the 2022 World Cup group stages

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 01:10 AM PST

I started a child trafficking ring to grow the best players in the world. It did not work.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 06:32 AM PST

I have had many past lives. I've managed Cheltenham, U.S. Palermo, Clermont Foot, and Hamburger SV. I've done it all — consecutive league titles, consecutive continental competition titles, I've been named the best manager multiple times, and yet my heart is empty. There was one thing missing in my life and that was to grow my own players.

No amount of imported wonderkids will make me happy. No amount of monetary regurgitation will satisfy me. I want to see kids grow through my ranks and stick with me throughout the years. So in my latest reincarnation, I'll stop at nothing to have the best academy in the world, and nurture the best footballing superstars as I guide my team to glory. I want every single one of my team members to have clawed their way through the youth ranks.

    THE SET-UP

I took the soul of a young Macanese woman with top coaching qualifications. No one knows where she came from, nor could understand her Cantonese tongue. But she immediately seized control of Maidstone United in Vanarama League South in England, and got to work.

Every single player was out the window. Mysterious transfers happened overnight. Top clubs like Liverpool woke up to find that they have had millions siphoned out their bank accounts for amateur players whose dribbling line reflected gerrymandered state boundaries. The Maidstone board are bewildered but delighted by how their accounts have multiplied thousands of times.

At the same time, other top clubs across the globe suddenly find themselves strongarmed into being affiliated with this tiny English club. They are now obliged to send tributes over to Birmingham on an annual basis, as well as to share scouting knowledge and help with marketing. They can't find the contracts for this, only hear the voices echoing endlessly in their head, so they cannot terminate the deal. They simply must accede, and offer their tributes.

There is no youth intake in the first year, but this is no concern. Youths from Premier League clubs are swept up and dumped into the squad, to carry the team temporarily. It is disgusting to have to rely on other people's offsprings, but no matter, they shall sooner be gone just as the old Maidstone squad had.

    THE FIRST WAVE

Maidstone cruise the first half of the season undefeated. But this does not really matter. We prepare to evacuate the squad as we welcome the bright-eyed kids. There's a Korean, a Chilean, a Swiss, and — bizarrely — a Monserratian player in the youth intake, along with the usual slew of Englishmen. They are immediately better than the 20 year olds, which is embarrassing. Imagine being told that this pasty 15-year old kid plays better than you and you're going to be benched. It happens.

Half the old squad is evacuated, and replaced with a collection of 15- and 16-year olds on youth contracts.

Here are the best ones, 4 years on:

    Montserratian Keeper

    English Defender

    Portuguese Winger

    American Midfielder

    English Striker

The rest had abilities that tailed off as time went on.

    THE SECOND WAVE

I am encouraged by the first set of players and believe in the project. We continue to smash the league and we finish undefeated. Some managers ascertain that they had beaten us a couple of times, with vivid memories down to the scorelines that lined up with descriptions other people recalled as well. But I do not hear them as Maidstone moves into the National League.

The team chugs along the first half of the season, with alarming lack of depth here and there cushioned by a couple of emergency signings. We've smuggled players out of their clubs in the cover of the night and no one is any the wiser.

And it's just as well. The next youth intake is slim pickings. There's a Finnish, a Portuguese, and an Australian, but none of them are any good. Instead, we rely on the one English.

    English Striker #2

    THE THIRD WAVE

I am desperate. Another injury crisis means another clandestine operation in which multiple players were sneaked into the club grounds outside of the transfer window. The previous intake was simply disappointing. We win the league unbeaten, but I feel hollow.

I go on holiday for some soul-searching, and when I return for the first League Two match, I have hundreds of messages requesting to buy my players. I flatly reject them. These kids are not for sale. On the other end, I give them the cold shoulder, as they request to move to bigger clubs. This is for the greater good. I'll bring them to the Premier League in time, and they'll be the greatest players to grace the Earth.

I slog. Each match hurts. Each transfer bid infuriates me. And then, March 14 rolls around again. It's time.

    Or is it?

Not a single player in my youth intake is worth casting an eye at. They are horrible. How dare they show themselves into the club pitch. How dare they call themselves graduants of the great Maidstone Academy. How dare they. I immediately terminate all of their trials. I don't want to see it.

    THE FOURTH AND FINAL WAVE

I hibernate. I'm cold and empty inside. We win League Two as well as some of the cups, undefeated of course, but I do not celebrate. My players are puzzled but I cannot tell them. I have failed.

But there's still a glimmer in the distance. March 14, 2024. All academies have slumps, right? We've had two bummer years, this one has to be good. It has to be.

It is December. Christmas mood. We are doing well in League 1 still, all the kids are growing up goodly. And then, this appears in my inbox:

    Maidstone youth intake preview

I resign immediately. Football is just not for me.

The MLS is impossible to play

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 03:59 PM PST

I find it extremely difficult to play with an MLS club. The rules alone are incomprehensible and the various trading systems are impossible to understand. Anyone else notice this or is it that I just suck

Hi there, I am planning on buying FM21 on steam this Christmas to treat myself for going through the tough times this year. My friend already has FM 21 on Epic Games, while I am planning on buying it on my steam account. We were planning on doing an online save when both of us had it and I was just wondering if I can play with my friend on Epic Games if I buy the game on my Steam account?
