Weekly Help Thread - Ask your help requests here | Week Commencing 16/08/2020

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:32 AM PDT

Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

Also, please remember that the team suggestion thread can be found in the sidebar, so please use that and give your suggestions to people there too!

I turned Ross County into a team full of Ross' - Part 1

I turned Ross County into a team full of Ross' - Part 1

After winning leagues, European trophies and building great teams, I thought it was time to try really challenge myself. After u/Hurball completed his incredible Millwall journey, I decided to take inspiration from his story and take over Ross County in FM20. Ross County are a Scottish team that play in the Highlands, after achieving promotion in 18-19, they built on that finish by surviving in the Premiership. But what if they weren't allowed to bring in players who never shared a name with them? What if they had to sign players who only shared the typical family name for people of the Scottish Clan Ross? Let's see and probably suffer....

    The Staggies

    The Rules

-Only players with 'Ross' in their first or last name can be signed, names such as 'Rossi' are allowed

-The edtior is enabled for these reasons:

    a. Reputation is enhanced / b. transfer budget is set to £1.5m, wage budget is set to £25k / c. I am unsackable / d. I had to sack every player not called Ross

Reputation and budget is enhanced due to the fact I start with 2 players, while it might seem generous these figures really aren't in the long run. Due to enhanced reputation the board expectations are through the roof, so I'd rather have some fun instead of having to save-scum, explaining the unsackable option. Finally, all these reasons might be seen as overpowering but as Ross County, trying to sign at least 18 players and possibly survive with a £300k budget and only 500k people in the world called Ross, would be overly boring as I would challenge Gretna in 07-08 for being the worst team in Premiership history. The editor will not be used to enhance performance of any players or change teams.

    Transfers

With only 2 players, Ross Stewart and Ross Laidlaw, actually at the club, it was straight into the market to find any players I could. Overall, the reputation didn't do much for me as I only managed to attract 80 players, with most lower league or Junior in Scotland. Signings are few and far between, but I eventually get desperate dragging in anyone I can, I almost considered changing the rules of the challenge to find decent quality players to even survive but managed to cope, and when I say cope, I mean negotiating deals for 35yo backup goalkeepers for 3 hours.

With just over £400k and only a few thousand on wages spent, I'm mostly happy with what I've managed to conjure. Mostly happy in the same way that a Glaswegian drug addict with a hula hoop is happy, they're in a terrible situation but they're keen to make the most of it.

    Tactics

A 4-5-1 tactic, aptly named 'Park It', is the one I've chosen to employ to start with. We're basically going to be defending for our lives, I don't have anything else to say. But there is some positives, the good thing about giving yourself an enhanced reputation is that you can invite teams like Real Madrid to play in Dingwall, the bad news however is that you're playing Real Madrid and you're in Dingwall.

    https://preview.redd.it/q95q4k130gh51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fc083771ad24c0766d9f9fce5e00493ca014dee

I think this shows the scale of the challenge, if you've seen the lineups, you'll notice a few controversial names. However, the challenge is to only play players with 'Ross' in their name, therefore it can be in any part of their fore/surname. The key players (names are found below)....

Grosso is just Italian for Ross

    pROSS.. basically Ross

    A key midfielder this season

    My main goal threat

    https://preview.redd.it/ma9bz7al2gh51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=805aaeda0982576b9985732a79b8207d22d84787

There's some great potential to stay up in this Ross County team, and then there's Ross Ross. ROSS ROSS. You don't have to ask why I signed him to be a 4th choice left back, you just know.

    The Squad

    https://preview.redd.it/7cjvi00j3gh51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a414538c9992c82d43d1f82b91f8656109238db3

Honestly, it's not much, but it's honest work. After spending literal hours in the transfer market, my squad of Ross' was assembled, and it was.. something. I have some cash left in the budget should I need to dive back in for more Ross type players in January, but right now we'll see what these lads can do. Or not do. Probably the latter.

    The First Match

The day arrived, a Betfred Cup group game against a Highland rival, The Rangers. Not that one, Cove Rangers, a team just promoted into League 2. With my strongest line-up selected, I told the boys assertively to have fun (because let's be real what am I meant to say).

    https://preview.redd.it/z58y5hr74gh51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ed3cabd07b3d74a9b6e7323f983bd3755a79fa6

And it was beautiful, an absolute shitfest against the lowest ranked professional team in Scottish Football and 2 goals to give us a first win on the journey. Considering the team I've got, I was so pleased with this. It'll be a massive struggle to stay up this season, but if we continue with the same fighting spirit, we might just have a chance... But then again it's a team full of players with 'Ross' in their name I don't know what you expect.

Once again a massive thanks to u/Hurball for the inspiration, stay tuned for part 2...

Coaching Badges are a missed opportunity in this game.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:21 PM PDT

Been thinking about how to write this post but I feel like there is a missed opportunity to add something this game has forever been dearly missing, personal progression. Right now if I start with no badges and no experience I have to hopefully find a club that will pay for my badges. If I am running a true journeyman save with no experience this can be daunting and sometimes years can pass before you are at a big enough club to pay for one. Meanwhile this club is paying me wages that does what exactly in the game? I know it gives you job security and maybe more aspects but why not let me spend my wages on my own education?

If I could choose my courses I could choose how I progress as a coach. Maybe I am making pennies but can afford a 6 month course on motivation. I choose to pay it from my wages and in 6 months I get a small 1 or 2 boost to motivating and level of discipline (fill in the blank for whatever you want here). That would give me the ability to choose how I want to progress as a manager. Maybe I am making pennies but save up and take a 1 year course that boosts all stats, much like what is in the game now. Perhaps if I get to a midlevel club I can take a specialist course in youth coaching the board agrees to pay half due to its high cost? There are so many options that could add some depth to your managers. I feel like you could go as simple or much deeper like maybe a specific course that makes a new shout available or increases its effectiveness. Hell let me meet some up and coming young coach at a course I attend rather than just searching through a list for stats, that could be kind of cool?

I don't know I am just spitballing here but the point is I feel adding coaching badges/courses that I could choose to pay for out of my wages would allow me to progress my manager in a personal way. The thing I love about football manager is progressing players and that is a huge draw for most to the game, why can't I choose and personalize how I progress myself?

Would love to know your thoughts on it?

When you become so dominant your reserve team gets to the league cup final as well...

I made a Site where you can calculate Players Rating & Role Strength based on their Attributes

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 09:32 AM PDT

    Link: https://sehne.github.io/fm20-attributes-calculator/

You can enter the Attributes of a Player and the site will calculate a Rating for each Position (Only works for Outfield Players). You can use this to see what other roles a Player might be good at or just to see how good a player is overall (based on his attributes).
Right now the Formula to calculate the rating takes the average of the role relevant attributes (while weighting "key" attributes higher than "important" attributes), but you can also adjust the Formula yourself.

If you want to quickly import the attributes from a Player you can screenshot his attributes (like this) and upload the image to a "image to text" converter site (like this or this one). Then past the text result into the textarea and press "Parse Attributes".
To import your whole squad you can create a view in fm20 with the player name and all attributes in the right order (or download & use this one) then export the view as a text file and paste all the players (not the table header) into textarea and click "Parse Players per .rtf".
Here a gif showing the process:
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sehne/fm20-attributes-calculator/master/src/assets/images/parseFromRtf.gif
For importing data it is important that the order for the attributes is the same in both fm & the calculator site, so make sure to use the same language. Atm there is only de & en, so if your language doesnt exist, you could send me a .json file with the attributes/roles like this for english and i would add it.

    Glory for Basingstoke Town!

After 15 years in game and 3.5(!) in real life, I managed to win the Prem with Basingstoke Town. From newly promoted to the Vanarama South, to Premier League winners, FA Cup Winners (x2), Champions League Semi Finalists and Europa League finalists. What a ride it has been!

I have a very young roster, so theoritically I could keep going for at least 10 more years, but most of my players are getting tempted to leave far too easily. Last year alone, PSG got my best player a day after he won "European Golden Boy", by triggering his 95M clause like it's nothing.

Nontheless, it's been an incredible save with many ups and downs, newgens becoming legends and of course it was amazing developing a club that solds 50 season tickets irl into a top 10 team in the world.

Colchester United is now in the Premier League! Not a joke a guy reached this goal and his team is already playing in Europa League this season. This is why he requested these awesome Colchester United bespoke kits for his save!

Feels really bad.. first season as Dortmund, miss out on League Title by 1 point because I prioritized starters for CL (Which I lost)

Typical Bayern. Accidentally Played Neuer at RB, Kimmich at GK, Davies at CB and still won 3-0. Neuer got a nice assist too.
