    "Who should I manage?" Megathread

If you're looking for a team to manage, a challenge to do, or you yourself have suggestions for teams/challenges for other people to do, use this thread to discuss.

This is to seperate these kinds of questions from the Help Thread, which is more for gameplay/tactics questions

Also apologies to people asking for team suggestions whose posts I've been removing for the past 5 days, I completely forgot to make a new one of these when I took the last one down

    [FM20] Completed Pentagon Challenge

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:46 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have been playing Football Manager for quite a few years now, but my usual saves just involve sticking to a single team (the majority of times in Europe) and build up usimg the youth teams.

This time I decided to try something a little different so I chose to give the Pentagon Challenge a go.

I chose to start in Asia, and downloaded an editor file to make the Japanese leagues playable and that's where this adventure ended up starting.

    Story

    Asia

    Holly Hock

    Hebei CFC

I started off with Holly Hock on the Japanese 2nd division the season was already on it's last third so there wasn't much I could do, besides preparing for the following season, so we finished in the 9th position.

On the 2nd season I was asked to help the team stay in a middle table position, but we overcame the expectactions and managed to always be near the play-off positions and the season ended with us taking the 2nd place and moving to play-offs, where we got promoted to the J1 League.

During our first season on the 1st division we were holding on to the 6th position, but I got an offer from the chinese team Hebei CFFC, they were fighting between the 2nd and 3rd position in their league, so I thought it would be a nice "upgrade" to my career and decided to take it, managing to take the 2nd place in the Chinese 1st Division.

The following season didn't go so well, we were eliminated from the AFC Champions League on the Second round by Cerezo Osaka and league wise the best we could do was a 3rd place. So it ended up being a trophyless season.

I wanted to do more and better next year, and we achieved that by winning both the league and the cup and reaching the finals of the AFC Champions League where we were defeated.

The next season started off with the right foot by winning the Chinese SuperCup which meant that we had already won every trophy internally, so the only thing missing was the AFC Champions League. Once again we took both 1st place in the league and also won the Cup. On the AFC Champions League we reenacted the previous year's final, but this time we came out victorious.

    Africa

    Sundowns

After winning the AFC Champions League it was time to move on, so I decided to go to Africa and ended up signing for the Sundowns, on the South African 1st division, for the final games of the season and the league was very close, any of the top 4 teams could have won the league, we could have taken, at least, the 2nd place but one unfortunate game ended up putting us on the 3rd position, leading to not qualifying for next season's Total CAF Champions League. But at least we managed to win the Nedbank Cup and qualify for the Total CAF Confederation Cup.

The following season we started by winning the MTN 8 Cup but getting knocked-out on the Quarter-Finals of the Telkom Knockout Cup. We once again won the Nedbank Cup and this year we took the 1st place in the league. I had high hopes for the Total CAF Confederation Cup but we ended up falling short and getting kocked-out on the Semi-Finals.

This next year couldn't have been any more successful, internally, we won the MTN 8, the Nedbank Cup, the Telkom Knockout Cup and taking 1st place, again, in the league. And the cherry on top of the cake, winning the Total CAF Champions League against the same team who eliminated us from the Total CAF Confederation Cup on the previous year.

    Total CAF Champions League Final

    North America

    Pumas

Time for the next champions league on the checklist, the time, the CONCACAF Champions League and for this challenge we took over Pumas in the Mexican league and, luckily, we managed to take the job right before the league started. The 1st season went really well, with us winning taking 1st place during the regular league on both the Apertura and Clausura leagues and subsequently winning both play-offs. Still, we didn't manage to win the Copa Corona MX since we lost in the finals.

The following season started with the Supercup where we lost, which ended up being a bad omen for the rest of season, at least for the Mexican competitions, we were knocked-out on the Quarter-Finals of the League Cup and we only managed to take 2nd place on the regular league in both Apertura and Clausura and losing on the Quarter-Finals of both play-offs. Even though in Mexico things didn't go well at all, at least we were doing very well on the CONCACAF Champions League and when we saw that we couldn't do much else in the league, we bet all our chips on this competition, we were to face Pachuca in the Final, the team that had bestened us in league, twice, and against whom we were yet to win a single game this season. Since we were playing the 1st leg at home, the idea was to try and get a good result so we could then play around it on the away game, which didn't happen, we played better than them but we were unable to score a single goal... We expected a complicated away game but the team really stood up for themselves and even though the score didn't show it, it was a very close game, but our accuracy was on point and we ended having quite an expressive win.

    South America

    Corinthians

And like that we left Mexico and went a bit more south, landing in Brazil to coach Corinthians. It was a short stay but filled with trophies.

When we arrived the 2nd half of the Campeonato Paulista Série A1 was already undergoing, we were in 2nd place at the time, but managed to take the 1st pleace in our division and proceed to with the play-offs, so this was our 1st trophy in South America.

After this we also managed to win the Cup and take 1st place in the Brasileirão. Only the Copa Libertadores was missing, we mostly got comfortable wins on our way to the finals where we met another Brazilian team, the Final really went smoothly and a million times easier than we expected it go, we completely dominated every single aspect of the game.

I decided to stay in Corinthians for a couple more months, to be able to play both the Brazilian Supercup and the Recopa Sudamericana, managing to win both of them.

    Recopa Sudamericana 1st Leg

    Recopa Sudamericana 2nd Leg

    Europe

    Tottenham

The last destination on this journey was Europe and the team that chose us was Tottenham, they had just finished the league in 2nd place (with the same points as the 1st place team, Chelsea).

Our squad wasn't as good as some of our closest rivals, like Chelsea and Manchester United and less deep as well, we had quite a few players above the age of 30, so we couldn't really be considered to have a young squad. This ended up hurting us a bit in the English competitions, we played really poorly on both Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup, knocked-out on the Quarter-Finals and on the Fifth round, respectively.

As for the league, we managed to stay in the 1st place for at least 2/3 of the competition, but when the Champions League Knock-Out Stage started we didn't manage to mantain a good form on both competitions so I opted for prioritizing the Champions League over the Premier League. We still had a shot for the 1st place since we played Manchester United on the second to last game of the season, but the best we could get was a draw and that's how our hopes for 1st place died...

The Champions League wasn't easy but we managed to beat Manchester City on both games by 1-0, and headed to the finals where we would meet Real Madrid, a team that started in the same group as we did and against whom we had won the home game but lost the away game.

It was a close game, we were better during the 1st half and managed to score, now it was their turn to run after the result so they started strong on the 2nd half, our keeper managed to keep them from scoring but on a defensive mistake we ended up conceding a penalty, which they didn't miss. From this point forward, it was a 50/50 game, both teams were attacking and creating chances but on the 84th minute, we were the ones who scored, after that the only thing on my mind was to defend that lead at all costs, the last minutes were rough and they still managed to create a couple of opportunities, luckily we managed to deal with all of them and won the game.

    Champions League Final

    Final Thoughts

This was a fun experience, the European Champions League was definitely the hardest to win and it was the only competition out of the 5 that I had tried so far, so I already knew what I was up against.

On that note, I really enjoyed the Asian competitions, in Japan there was one team who was above the others and they won the league every single season since I started my save and that was Frontale, in China there were 3-4 teams who sort of had a shot at winning every year, but on both league you really had to rely on the foreign players that you managed to sign to do well, since there weren't any amazing native players.

Both South African and Mexican leagues were quite interesting and very competitive, there was no team who was dominant every year, what I saw happen was teams that did really well on one year be a bit lackluster on the following year and have someone else take their place, so I was never really sure about who would end up being a direct threat to my team.

In Brazil, just like in China, there were a few teams that usually fought for the first places in the table, since I started Corinthians had won 3 times in a row, followed by Grêmio also 3 times in a row and finally Flamengo with 4 wins in a row before I joined Corinthians and broke their streak.

At first I wasn't planning to post about this and thought about keeping it just for myself, so I literally just wrote everything now which is why I couldn't really go into much detail (especially on the Asia and Africa chapters). But then I just thought "Why not?" and here we are :)

Since there's no Oceania leagues on the base game, I have also downloaded the New Zealand league, in case I decided to give the OFC Champions League a go as well, but since it wasn't part of the Pentagon I left it for last and I'm still undecided whether or not to do it. I have also received a couple of offers to sign for National teams but I didn't find much interest in it.

Thank you all for reading my post, I hope you appreciate it. Stay safe :)
