My Really Average First Football Manager Career. [PART 6]

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:01 PM PDT

So, getting the Derry City job was a bit of a shock. I thought I was destined for the Welsh championship, on National League North/South. But getting that Derry City job was great for me, and having nearly £500,000 to spend was brilliant.

I arrive in January, and I have 16 days of the transfer window left to sign players. I start with selling 2 of Derry's best players, Joel King and Joe Todd for a combined £875k. I had a target of finishing mid-table, and with a side that had just finished 3rd the season before I thought I could cope with selling my best 2 players.

My first signing is the mighty Mark McGuinness from Walsall. He cost £2.5k, which meant Walsall made a loss of £87.5k from when I signed him a little over 5 years ago. I also bring in Josh Coley and Liam Bossin, because we really needed a new goalkeeper and midfielder.

I go back to Walsall once again, this time signing D'Mani Mellor for only £14.75k. A bargain I thought. I also managed to secure Sam Perry on loan from Walsall too. They really did help me out at the start of my time at Derry. Ismet Dzaferovic also left to my league rivals, Shamrock, for £70k.

I needed some experience in the side too, so I brought in Garry Buckley, Will Keane, and Joe Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy was instantly appointed captain, and Will Keane took the Vice-Captain role.

Those decisions were probably the start of my downfall, before I even played a game, with my ex-captain really pissed off that he lost the captaincy, and to go along with that, nearly all of the team (except my new signings) were against my decision. Signing 8 players, and selling Derry's 3 best players, and along with having 32 first-team players was too much to manage.

D'Mani Mellor and Will Keane both scored on their debuts against Cork in a 3-1 victory, but that's about as good as it got. We were 9th, and after only 4 months in charge, I was sacked at the end of May.

Yet another job failed, and I was struggling to carry on at this point. But I persisted. Next up was a job at Connah's Quay.

    Anyone play with Girona?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Wondering if anyone has played as Girona. Got promoted in my first season and it's now 2023. Bought a few youngsters from other clubs for a million each. Also got a few free transfers in (Jesus Vallejo has been amazing and Gavin Bazunu im hoping he develops well). I placed 6th or 7th between 2021 and 2023 so it's going well.

I've ended up selling Cristhian Stuani and Yassine Bounou for pretty good prices. Captain Alex Granell is retiring in 2023, just couldn't get any play time with us in the first division.

Current starters: GK: Gavin Banunu (free transfer from Man City)

LB: Luis Olivera (free transfer from River Plate in Argentina)

CB: Jesus Vallejo (free transfer from Real Madrid, valued at $28.5 million, set to be my captain starting next season)

CB: Lenny Lacroix (purchased from FC Metz for near pennies, he actually had the 4th most interceptions in La Liga in 2022-23 for me)

RB: Jonas Svennson (paid a good 18 million for him from AZ)

DM: Ander Guevara (loaned him in 2020 and loved him so much I bought him in 2021 from Real Sociedad) / Gerard Gumbau (actually an original)

CM: Jozabed (loved him, irl currently on loan with Girona so bought him from Celta de Vigo)

CM: Pere Pons (bought from Alaves because I needed more club grown players for Europa League)

AM: Brijan Ibrahimi (youngster I bought for $1million from Torino, now valued at 5.5 million and the starting forward for Albanian National team)

LW: Thomas Chacon (bought for 4.5 million from Minnesota (MLS), now worth 9 million and capped for Uruguayan national team) / Borja Garcia (the only other original Girona player I have left that plays frequently)

Striker: Jordi Escobar (bought for $1 million from Valencia, has been the young spanish player of the year for the past 2 years, usually scores 15ish goals a season for me and still just 21!)

Just wondering if anyone else has played as them and what you've done.
